2027 has a crazy spike in cash.
Can't really get too much savings from a restructure there either as it's a huge roster bonus.

Wonder how often this deal can be rewritten to save on cap space. And the impact of it.

Pretty much any year they want. Just restructure the roster bonus into a signing bonus and prorate it over 5 years. 2027 is a lock to be restructured.and I'd expect 2023 to also be restructured at the minimum.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Didn't realize roster bonuses could be restructured. Usually, only seen base converted into a signing bonus to drop the cap hit.

That seems intentional, maybe a go/no go decision point for the team.

This is such an apples to oranges comparison of the Dak contract that I don't even know how it can be used as a reference btw.

Patrick Mahomes signed a 10 year, $450,000,000 contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, including a $10,000,000 signing bonus, $141,481,905 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $45,000,000. In 2020, Mahomes will earn a base salary of $825,000 and a signing bonus of $10,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $5,346,508 and a dead cap value of $64,953,413

this is an amazing deal. the difference is huge with giving an extension with 2 years left on the contract, and giving an extension on a franchise tag. The Chiefs still have 3 good years without being salary cap strapped. The fun begins in 2023, but I'm pretty sure the cap hit will look fine once Dak, Lamar Jackson, Watson, Kyler Murray, heck even Baker Mayfield have signed their contracts.

Craziest NFL contract I've ever seen. Even so, Pat will never see the bulk of that money.
I don't know, most QB's see the bulk if not more than the original amount of money. Think about it, the cap has gone up every years since 2010, just go look it up. It's as obvious as the nose on your face. This year because of Covid is why there is even any concern of the cap doing down next year as the team revenues could be impacted as games could be cancelled and the gate at the stadium will be zero. At the end of the day, no team will lose any money, no team will lose any money! NFL owners never lose money. Take a piece of masking tape and put in our mirror.
They would not get into this business and become legacy owners if it wasn't a lucrative business. The owners in the NFL have a 52/48 revenue split advantage, no matter what the owners get more.
Having said all that, i don't think we should pay Dak what he is asking for.. I am not some illogical owner hater... :)
There is only one Mahomes in the league and he is the clear tier 1 guy. There are two outcomes of this deal.
The overall QB contract for Dak, Lamar, Watson, eventually Darnold, Tua, Mayfield, etc, etc have gone up, but the one great part is the next contract wont be higher than Mahomes deal as those guys cannot ask for 50 million because they are not Mahomes. A new high bar has been set and these other guys dont qualify.

I don't either. Dak's deal will look nothing like this because 1) he's not currently signed and 2) he's not signing a 10 year extension.

This looks like a series of 1 year contracts. Team can opt out at any time.

Bearing in mind inflation, it appears to be less per annum, in real terms, with less guaranteed money than Dak is looking for

The only fully guaranteed money for Mahomes is $63m. Everything else is gated behind "rolling" guarantees that the team can opt out of X amount of time before they come due.

Mahomes got clowned. I mean good for the Chiefs but they're safe every stage of the way and I'm not sure his real guarantees are better than Russell Wilson got.

All Mahomes got was a big headline to brag about while being dunked on in the fine print.

Why wouldn't he? You think he can't keep his level of play up for 12 years? Hell I'll be honest I think he exceeds this contract.

You can't predict how long a guy can stay both healthy and motivated. Look at Andrew Luck. Or hell, Troy Aikman and Tony Romo. Guys like Favre and Brady are EXTREME outliers.

Yeah but 12 years from now would make him 36. Aikman retired at 35. Romo I believe was 36. Favre and Brady are outliers but in today's climate if you can play you are playing. I see nothing to suggest he won't play until 36.

Peyton, Eli, Rodgers, Big Ben, Rivers, Brees....its not crazy to play until 36.

Why won’t he? He doesn’t have a ton of incentives in his deal like most.
Basically if he’s on the roster each year he gets paid. So unless he gets hurt he’s seeing most of that money.

Why wouldn't he? The roster bonuses are paid on the first day of the new league year. Are you suggesting they would cut him instead of pay it? He also has 140 mil guaranteed for injury.
