depends who the QB is. Tyreek Hill's short game is really good, but a weak-armed QB won't be able to fully maximize his value. For Mahomes, Tyreek Hill is better than a CeeDee Lamb/Hopkins.
Mahomes would throw for 5000 yards with any of those guys as his WR1.
Part of the reason he clicks so well with Hill is Tech ran a lot of smaller, quicker WRs through like Jakeem Grant.
Grant caught 90 passes for ~1300 yards and 10 TDs in Pats first full season as a starter.
Pat looks for the big play and those quick and fast guys can really make that happen.

CeeDee had great stats at OU but if he had played with Pat good grief, lights out.

I’ll take a WR like Tyreek Hill over CD Lamb, Gallup , Hopkins 24/7.

You can’t cover or teach elite speed.

Many olympic sprinters have tried unsuccessfully to be wr's and failed. No question hill is the rare exception having both speed and route running ability. But nfl history is filled with names like largent, belitnikof, pearson, irvin who achieved nfl greatness being great route runners.

there is a lot of players with speed....you need receiving ability...Williams had 4.3 speed. zero hands. zero route running ability. he sucked. we had a guy who ran a 4.19, can't recall his name. but his only game was straight ahead go route.....Hill has speed. but he is also a good WR, with good route running and good hands...that's the killer combination....
Agreed. You need everything. You mentioned Williams and another good example was his college teammate Corey Coleman who was from the DFW area.

Elite speed but ran lazy routes, gets jammed at the line very easily, injury prone, and questionable work ethic. He was a 1st round pick yet has been on 2 different teams practice squad (which i've never heard of a 1st rounder being on a practice squad) and now his last hope is to make the Giants roster as a backup WR with special team ability

I think he's talking about Randall Williams

No it was Wright.

'Wright was one of the fastest players in the league, winning the NFL's "Fastest Man" competition in 1992 and 1993. In May 1991, he was timed to have run the 40-yard dash in 4.14 seconds.'

He was the first guy i ever heard of to run sub 4.2, but i thought it was 4.19, 4.14 is insane.

I remember the 49ers had track star, Renaldo Nehemiah.
Super fast. Couldn't run a route or catch a pass to save his life.

Could be. Ace wright actually ran a 4.09 40 yard dash time. But bad hands and timidity over the the middle put him in disfavor with the demanding jimmy Johnson. He didn't last long.

Usian Bolt ran a 4.2 40, that 4.09 sounds super sketchy.

Very few of the best WR’s in the history of the game were burners. Most great WR’s are technicians that run great routes to get open. There are loads of burners that were busts because all they had was speed. See Al Davis and the Raiders. In reality quickness is as important as speed. That’s what truly makes Hill so dangerous is his quickness, His speed helps him run away from people but his quickness gets him away in the first place.

You can cover elite speed by bracketing coverage, rolling a safety over top or with an elite CB. Obviously the first two open up other options.

And yet, the two greatest WRs, perhaps in the history of this game, weren't fast guys. Seems odd....

From an era 30 years ago where they were the only target. It also doesn’t change the fact the more speedy WRs are successful than non speedy ones.

I'm convinced the prior coaching regime could've had Jerry Rice and
Randy Moss and not known what to do with either of them.
So you are convinced that you can derail this thread into something else.

Good to know.
