If you ever wanted to understand defensive line coach Jim Tomsula's aspirations and the reality of that journey then all you have to do is look at his professional coaching history.

I don't mean to bag on the guy, I hope he is successful here for sure and he is one of the most respected defensive coaches in the league. I just couldn't help being amused by his year by year official titles:

Year Employer Role
1998 England Monarchs Defensive Line
1999 Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
2000 Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
2001 Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
2002 Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
2003 Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
2004 Berlin Thunder Defensive Coordinator
2005 Berlin Thunder Defensive Coordinator
2006 Rhein Fire Head Coach
2007 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2008 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2009 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2010 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line/Interim Head Coach
2010 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2011 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2012 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2013 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2014 San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
2015 San Francisco 49ers Head Coach
2017 Washington Commanders Defensive Line
2018 Washington Commanders Defensive Line
2019 Washington Commanders Defensive Line
2020 Dallas Cowboys Defensive Line

Every five years or so he gets ambitious and in one season....or less.....he's right back where he obviously belongs.

I think we all realize that there are some great assistant coaches and defensive coordinators that are fantastic at their job......and really lousy at being Head Coaches. Probably true in several professions, you have to fail in order to realize your plateau. Equally important, you have to accept it.

There is nothing wrong with just being a good position coach
But everyone aspires to bigger things
I would think at this point his option at moving up are limited
That’s the advantage of a guy who’s been around and figured out he is just a position coach

Makes sense same is probably true with Marinelli. Good at getting more out of players, but not a good talent scout, or building defensive scheme or play calling at this point.

Cool, the Claymores were my favorite NFLE team!
So how good was their DLine?

Funny I just read an old article about Tomsula - Feb 2020. Nothing in depth about his style. It was actually just 1 of a bunch of snippets on our new assistants.

Your post is totally bagging on the guy who are you trying do kid. It’s a totally ignorant take. For obvious reasons that aren’t worth my time to explain. If you don’t understand, you obviously don’t, you will never understand.

Garrett was never a good coordinator. Tony Sparano was the genius. Once he left Garrett looked mediocre. He’s damn good at t shirt slogans though

Lol wat? It’s just clear D-line is his specialty. Nothing more to read into it. Sometimes, occasionally, people literally say what they mean

Tony was largely the OC under Garrett. Mr. Kill Kill Kill started as OC on the field, and by *at least* 2015, was making the weekly game plan, as reported by Butler.

It did seem that way.

Still remember Romo refusing to get off the field on 4th down in the Eagles playoff game, and Wade mouthing "you can't do that" on the sidelines.
