If you ever wanted to understand defensive line coach Jim Tomsula's aspirations and the reality of that journey then all you have to do is look at his professional coaching history.
I don't mean to bag on the guy, I hope he is successful here for sure and he is one of the most respected defensive coaches in the league. I just couldn't help being amused by his year by year official titles:
Year Employer Role
England Monarchs Defensive Line
Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
Scottish Claymores Defensive Line
Berlin Thunder Defensive Coordinator
Berlin Thunder Defensive Coordinator
Rhein Fire Head Coach
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line/Interim Head Coach
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line
San Francisco 49ers Head Coach
Washington Commanders Defensive Line
Washington Commanders Defensive Line
Washington Commanders Defensive Line
Dallas Cowboys Defensive Line
Every five years or so he gets ambitious and in one season....or less.....he's right back where he obviously belongs.
I think we all realize that there are some great assistant coaches and defensive coordinators that are fantastic at their job......and really lousy at being Head Coaches. Probably true in several professions, you have to fail in order to realize your plateau. Equally important, you have to accept it.
