Any Concerns about Mike Nolan as Defensive Coordinator

And even when they had DC Dom Capers, and won a SB, the Packers were dead last in NFL in total yards allowed, but yet No.1 in Takeaway-Turnovers...

Unfortunately two things happened while still under the MM regime:
1) the Dom Capers defense never improved and seem to get worse
2) McCarthy took way too long in finally stepping up to replace Capers, could this have been too

Much is talked about the rift between McCarthy vs Rodgers, but having/maintaining a whimpy defense also contributed in the
downfall of MM in Green Bay.
And goes with saying again.. i couldn't wait to get Marinelli outta here.

Agree, and far be it from me to use stats as a factor in criticizing defensive ineptitude. But in the case of McCarthy's past playoff defensive performances the numbers are just too overwhelmingly poor even for me.

However consistent McCarthy's Pack teams were in reaching the playoffs for a number of years, once arriving there , the defensive side of the team pulled a no show just as consistently.
As you mentioned the outlier of the one championship run, the norm for the defense whether Capers led or not, was particularly cringe worthy. I'm all for increased turnover production but I guess I just do not share the overall confidence of some just for change's sake.

If he doesn't develop a good defense, mac will step in and make a change. Something Garrett could never do.

i wonder what the tight short leash would be, (have to be) if we are really in a Win Now mode, we cannot afford to wait -4 years down the road in a rebuild mode.

The Cowboys better average close to 30 points on offense if we plan on making the playoffs.

Gimme someone that adjusts correctly to what the offense is doing.

Our two best defensive games last year where the first eagle game and the rams game. Two of the better offensive teams we faced. We mixed things up in both games and the d played well.

then against the likes of the bears.... bills... and jets we sat back and let sub par offenses pick us apart.

I still don’t know how we didn’t blitz the jets every play in that game with their Oline beat up.

I think the difference is Nolan will be held accountable for his defense where Rod was a mythological dinosaur who was admired by fellow septuagenarian Jerry Jones and echoed Jason Garrett's brilliant "just beat your guy" coaching philosophy.

I don't think Nolan is an elite DC by any means, but he will be coaching for his livelihood. This is his first coordinator job since 2014 and if it doesn't go well he is not likely to see another.
2014?

Really...?

Maybe he and Aldon Smith can room together.

That's a long time to be outta coaching.

Offenses have changed alot since 2014.

Not so great.

Guess we better score, huh?

I think it's more about how the defense is playing. Mike zimmer is notorious for firing coordinators whose teams don't perform. Just hoping mac will be another.

Yes. The high of Marinelli leaving has worn off and we're realizing Nolan is pretty mediocre.

Anything is better than Marinelli at this point. I will take mediocre over Marinelli. If the defense can come up with some big plays we are going to beat a lot of teams. And the offense can score big in those games where his risk taking defense gives up the big plays.

As I said numerous times out of all the coaching staff signings he was my least favorite.

Something about him just strikes me as meh. Hope I'm wrong

its his history of coaching bad defenses.

The only reason a washed up coach gets a primo DC job in Dallas is because he is big buddies with the HC. (Nolan gave Mike the OC job at 49ers. It was payback time.)

Then what is ol coach Joe Philbin?
Isn't he currently carrying the same title as
OL coach/" assistant head coach" too?

Rob Davis is the AHC.

no one talks about him on here. He’s not even a coach. He’s a players rep.

edwards and Tomsula are the two best hires.

the LB coach is a GB reject that Mike brought over.

i don’t know how linguist was hired. He’s unknown.

Harris is another GB hire. Fired after the KC meltdown in the playoffs.

I'm not saying the old adage that a change of scenery is good for some can't be true in some cases.
However, with that being said, my opinions are more strongly based on returning to past patterns of performance and behaviors.
As I see you remain skeptical of several members of this staff with regards to this as well, I support your line of thinking.

I think Nolan will prove to be clearly better than Rod, in all his aging brilliance...

Golden Cock's aside, Rod really reminded me of Techmo SB - remember having like 4 entire plays to choose from... Rod seemed just like that, but just with a little less play variation..

I hope they let Nolan roll on the sidelines in a suit; that look is always so much better...

Just ask Tom:
