We missed our opportunity to sign him last year choosing to wait and see how he performed in 2019. Now if we wait until 2021 he’s going to be much more expensive .

At least about 7 million more just on the Franchise Tag but an extended contract next year will surpass anything we could arrive at today.

Assuming we still want Dak for years to come if we don’t sign him today it’s going to be a poor financial decision compared to next year or years ahead.

The only conclusion we can arrive at today if we don’t extend him is we aren’t sold on Dak and that message will be loud and clear.

If a contract is not reached, it means he plays on the tag this season. Nothing more.
Then we will know for sure if he is worth a larger contract or not come nest season. Unless there are some excuses to cause one to think differently. And oh, boy, there will be excuses from both sides.
It means nothing else at this point.

Fans only make it out too mean something based on their narrative and / or personal opinions.

Some excuses, for and against......too many injuries any QB would fail, he had a great team around him, any QB would succeed.

or we are sold but are only willing to put so much of the cap into any one player, or sold but not for highest paid player money.

“Indeed, if Dak goes after 2020, who would they replace him with? They got lucky with Dak in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. How lucky will any team get in 2021 if there’s no college football season and a draft pick who hasn’t played college football in 20 months suddenly is expected to perform at the NFL level?

Barring a catastrophic injury or a dramatic dip in performace, Dak is looking at $69.08 million over the next two years, followed by either a gigantic payday from the Cowboys or a chance to see what the open market will bear.

Considering how that worked for Kirk Cousins in 2018, Prescott should be exited by the possibility of becoming the first quarterback in league history who received the exclusive version of the franchise tag, didn’t sign a long-term deal, and then became a free agent. If the Cowboys want to keep that from happening, it’s time to do what they should have done the moment his third regular season ended: Make him an offer he can’t refuse”.

A no decision today carries much more meanIng financially is the point.

D-Law played on the tag and we signed him to a huge deal.

Maybe JJ don’t want him, or maybe Dak don’t want to be here. Or Daks agent is greedy and screwing Dak and us.

Unless there is no football this year.

The cap will plummet if there is no season and do his price would have to come down if he wants to QB for the Cowboys.

Which is why a deal likely won't be reached today...unless Dak caves...which given the circumstances, might be smart.

What if he has a lousy year? His value decreases. Or he sustains a major injury. A lot can happen.

These are facts @Diehardblues. This team would be foolish to not sign him today. Then next year they will be trying to sign him for the same deal they want to sign him for this year except he will want even more.

Seems to me as if this time last year Jerry decided to wait it out and see what happened.

And what was that? Loading up numbers against teams playing for a draft pick and when behind.

He didn't exactly light the world on fire against the better teams, and came up small in several big spots.

If Jerry actually offered what has been reported, it's way more than fair.

Ita also no secret that going back to Aikman, they would often restructure the contract to create cap room.

They basically count on it, but it appears a four year deal makes that difficult.

Prescotts camp wants it both ways apparently, which gets everyone nowhere.

IF he has a lousy year then you don't want to sign him at that point. One of two things will happen. He will either raise his value or he will suck to the point you want to move on from him. There's no scenario where he lessens his value to where you keep him.

That’s quite a risk the Cowboys are making financially.

If he wants above top dollar and isnt affording the team any flexibility in the contract to create cap space if needed, its gets to where it's better to just not do it.

Who cares. He will be another team’s problem after this season
If they were willing to move on, they would be more willing to go with a shorter deal. We are here right now because they arent. If they dont extended him next March, they will tag him again. Which will be 37m+, and next July we are right back to where we are now. Expect next year, it will be for more money

Right. The sooner the cheaper. But no situation going forward is team friendly now. It only gets worse going forward. If he plays on the tag this year there may be no reasonable offer available next year. Even if he plays very well next year it may not be possible to maintain the team given what it will require to keep him.
