Signing a long term deal, therefore lowering his cap hit and allowing the team to bring in additional talent would be helping them get to the Super Bowl.

Sticking on the tag, in my opinion, is contradictory to what he's saying he's trying to do.

I'm genuinely surprised.

Biggest takeaway to me: this is big sign of Jerry's declining influence on the franchise.

I like Dak.

But if we aren’t planning on locking him up long term after this season, I would rather trade him now and improve our defense with that extra $31 million. No point in playing one season and losing him for nothing.

I’ll take Dalton + $30 million of defensive talent (let’s say Yannick or Clowney + Jamal Adams) please.
Trade Dak and cut Crawford and that could happen....Along with a real good draft pick next year!

We just lived through 18 mths of these incorrect statements. You can't start up again within an hour of it failing to happen. I'm thinking March 2021 would be the earliest this should start up again.

I really want to hear what happened. Not the spin from France, but what actually happened.

What one of Dak's masterpiece games was this taken at? Second Philly game maybe......

I don't think it was from the Dak era. I googled "Cowboys paperbag failure" and a bunch of photos of Romo and Garrett came up. Managed to find the paperbag I was looking for.

Garrett had say but he didn't have it in contract matters. Let's don't kid ourselves here.

Then you're already seeing the difference cause I'm betting McCarthy does have say. And that say is probably one of things that kept Jerry from giving in.

I’m a Dak fan, but this doesn’t surprise or dismay me in any way as a Cowboys fan, and I’ve never understood why so many fans were fretting about it.

  • Good for Dak....after being underpaid throughout his rookie deal without it ever being brought in line as a starting QB, he is now going to earn enough money in one year to live well the rest of his life, and if he takes care of it, his future children’s lives as well.
  • Good for Cowboys....they managed the cap, still signed free agents, held onto others, and can easily pay that tag money with no problems.
  • Good for Mike McCarthy....despite all the nice things that both the Cowboys and the coach said about the young Dak, they now have a year to actually assess just how Dak performs and fits in the system, even though it may not be completely new for another year...Mike still sees first hand what he needs to see.
  • Good for fans....on paper, the Cowboys have a better offense and hopefully a better defense this season. It is not a year of wait and see or rebuilding. The Cowboys should be able to compete at a high level immediately. Other than Byron Jones, the Cowboys didn’t lose anyone of consequence, so whether they resign Dak in 2021 or decide to move on to a new QB, the team is not suffering.
As a fan, I believe Dak IS our franchise QB and is one of the top 10 QB’s in the NFL right now, but if the coaches and front office decide to move on, I have no problem with that.
I think Dak and the Cowboys both did what they believe is best for them, and I find it hard to consider either as a loser in this situation.

I don't get why some of you are so worried and obsessing over this? We just got a hell of a coach in Big Mike and I'm sure he want's to start off on the best foot possible right? There is no way it would of been a great move for Big Mike to lock Dak up before he has a chance to work with him.. If the freckled puppet was still here dak would of been signed already, so just put down the pipe and chalk it up for what it is.. This organization is finally making smart moves! If Dak and Big Mike kill it, Jerry and Stephen can figure this out later..

And for those of you that think this is going to cause a strained relationship between Dak and team it won't.. Jerry will say the right things to Dak, and Dak will come out with a ton to prove... This is a great move, and an even better one for our great coach Big Mike.
