What should the Cowboys do about the QB position going forward?

They’ll most likely just sign him next offseason. This changes very little long term.

There's a reason I was never a Dak Prescott fan before Dallas drafted him and after today who knows how much longer I will be cheering for him!

This coming from someone who likely sees or talks to Dak EVERYDAY.

Sure. They were miles apart on a compromise now so next year should just make everything magically better.

Anything short of the NFC Championship game and I think Dak is gone if his demands remain the same. If the Cowboys do get that far or get to the Super Bowl they'll be looking at entering into a cap crippling contract unless he signs something similar to Mahomes.

I don't see him playing on the tag a second year in a row. He either gets signed next year or is out. There's a good chance the cap won't even go up next year, so letting Dak take up almost 20% of the cap would be idiotic.

Only 4 quarterbacks next year will be a cap hit either higher or similar to Dak on a second tag. Big Ben, Ryan, Rodgers, and Brees. So yeah, Dak's not playing on a 2nd tag.

This is exactly what I'm thinking......either he gets resign or we move on.

Not as dumb as you wanting to pay 40 million a year to a QB who hasn't done anything more.

That would be true if I ever said I did. Instead its just another dumb comment by a useless troll.

IN fact, I have said many times I wouldnt pay 40 million.

A tag next year will mean we are going to have to start restructuring at least one of the three big contracts (DLaw, Coop or Zeke), im still sure that the Jones only wanted to do this as a last resort as im sure in 2022 they planned to cut or restructure at a team friendly rate.

I wish we knew exactly what the offer was and what exactly was holing it up. It's over now so what difference does it make? This way we could start 8,000 new threads on that topic alone.

Franchise Prescott next season and draft a QB with a 1st or 2nd round pick in the 2021 Draft. I'd try to keep Dalton as well. That way I can trade Prescott either during the draft or post draft.

Yep, thinking about it the first thing we need to do is offer Dalton a second year asap.

Dak gave Jerrah the bird and in the process made things much tuffer on the Cowboys. I know a lot of people are happi, or act like there happi, but drafting a QB is far from certain and will most likely set this team back a couple of yeers and that’s assuming the QB is at least average.

They better draft a QB because they’ll e paying $37 million plus to franchise him next year. Dam is getting paid either way with all this guaranteed money. Cowboys are built to win soon so they don’t want to be starting over at QB.

Now that Dak wont be signing a long-term extension here :)rolleyes:), what should be the contingency plan be in regards to the QB position going forward?

Draft?

Free Agency?

Trade?

Trade Dak if they can *now*. Roll with Dalton this year. Pick up another developmental QB.

Plan on drafting a QB, or two, next year. Maybe taking an older high quality QB.

I think Dalton will be fine for 2-3 years (reminds of the Jim Plunkett story) which gives us time to groom the new Franchise QB.

We have a QB signed and being paid handsomely for 2020.
Play the season, see how he and the team does, then cross that bridge afterward.

This is the part where you're reminded of Cowboys QBs drafted since Aikman, as well as the guys they wanted to draft. It's a long list of failure and the same fools will doing the drafting.

I'm not as nearly confident in them as you and a few others appear to be. They fell into the only two decent QBs they've had this century...but I'm sure they'll nail the next one.

We've spent next to nothing on QBs since Aikman, and managed to get Romo, Dak, and Matt Moore.

I've argued for a long time that the supply of quality QBs is higher than the number of starting slots available. College produces more, NFL QBs play longer. Supply is up.

Foles jumped off the bench to win a SB, I think SB MVP. Dak jumped off the bench as rookie to be our franchise QB. Without injuries to Romo and Moore during preseason, Dak might still be a backup nobody.

it depends, I think financially, its about the average we thought...do we have a QB? is Dalton the short term answer? we know Dalton is not the long term answer. who is the guy that we are going to have in place of Dak…..we have to realize that we are not in a rebuilding mode, having paid Cooper, Zeke, Lawrence, Smith, Martin, Collins, it all points to us making a run.....and its going to come down to the offer, so if we make a deep playoff run, even get to the second round of it, then we are close and if the answer for the QB is not there, then we might sign him to a second franchise....wouldn't surprise me....

That would basically waste the rest of the oline's career and probably the rest of Zeke's prime. Probably gonna be rebuilding in three years anyway. Worst time to be thinking about getting worse at qb.
