What should the Cowboys do about the QB position going forward?

Scout QBs in college this year. Get an idea where Dak and his camp are angling for the next round of negotiations. If they are going to dig in again like they did here, you draft a QB early in the draft. If things go south, Dalton is the starter in 2021 and the young gun learns for a few games. It's an ideal situation for a young QB too as he will be playing behind a decent OL and have tons of weapons around him.

I would do that this season... I mean if Dak is the Super Hero some believe he is, he should have no problem beating out Dalton for the position.

I think Romo would give you a big fat "like" for this comment.
The question is:
Did the Jones (Garrett) learn anything from the last "camp competition battle" that Romo requested and was denied ?

i bet he signs a deal during the year, its funny how you guys are saying since he didn't sign an extension now that he is gone.....honestly, just take a step back and relax....if dak plays well then he will get a big extension mid year, if he sucks then they will either get a cheaper extension or look at moving on at that point.

long way to go.
jipper you need to get into this a little more lol.
first there is nothing to extend, he isnt under a contract, just the tag. Extension went bye bye last year.

2nd, what do you think the deadline today was about?? lol well it was a deadline for a new contract to be signed.
That is now gone bye bye cant do anything till next march I think. and they may wait until after the draft.
Plus jones boys may be mad, and if they are, they may not even try to sign dak next year, unless he gets to a SB this year.

This is smarter though. If Dak is lights out this season then we give him the deal he wants. If not we have Dalton and we can be aggressive moving forward.
if dak plays this year, dalton will be gone if offered a starting gig elsewhere. so he wont be around for the moving forward.
give him the deal he wants ......which is what ? lol 45 mil a year? you have no idea what dak would ask for if he got to champ game or a SB.
Bottom line is Cowboys can do as good or maybe better with another qb , and get them cheaper than dak.

I think todd and dak and everyone else thought jones boys would cave at last hour, but they didnt, so now they may change their minds on dak.
especially if this made them mad.
they will put dak on the open tag next year, unless he wins a SB, but even then, I think dak is going to want too much money.

That would basically waste the rest of the oline's career and probably the rest of Zeke's prime. Probably gonna be rebuilding in three years anyway. Worst time to be thinking about getting worse at qb.

Hopefully not rebuilding by then I think theyre still 2-3 away from contending. Especially with there being no season this year.

45 is an exaggerated number, cmon man. Mahomes set the market and Dak is NOT going to be breaking through that ceiling on any team.

You are right about Dalton, my bad there.

I'm a Dak fan, but it's gotta be draft.

He's only going to be more expensive next off season. The franchise tag in year2 (regardless of the cap) is 37m. Year 3 is 54m. So the AAV STARTING point will be 37m per year for 4 years, and you could make a case it's 45.5 (splitting the difference). And they can't negotiate until the season is over (if there's a season). The Jones's backed themselves into a corner on this one. Doing things The Commander Way doesn't work out. Maybe Mike McCarthy can salvage Mitch Trubisky in 2021. Sigh.
It’s not even about expense but time. No reason at all to sign a 4 year deal next year because he could have just signed a 5 year deal this year. He must not want to be here long term. The deal offered was not a lowball deal.

No way in hell I'm trusting this team with a rookie over the next 2-3 years.......our window is NOW. If they can't get Dak signed before 2021 draft. I'm keeping an eye on Cam Newton. He only signed a one-year deal with the Pats. IF he healthy, he's easily a top 10-15 QB.

But something tells me Dak is going to play his axx off leading this team to at least NFCCG.

Don't think for a second this thing hasn't compromised some trust between Dak and FO.

Tad . . . I could imagion his real name.

How Lame. . . hopefully you will not have to wait much longer to route aagains the Boys.

You're right about that problem. But having a top 5 cap hit in the entire NFL for 2021 is not exactly financially average. If the salary cap doesn't go up next season I don't think it would be advisable to tag him again. Yes he's better than Dalton. But what is better overall for the team? Keeping Dak and maybe losing players or unable to resign some players? Or going with Dalton and maybe even improving the team around him? I think Goff is trash yet they went to a SB. We don't need to pay Dak 37 million.
the top 5 cap hit is the mess we got ourselves into for additional year on the contract, 4, vs. 5. and I don't think Dalton would play for the 3-7 million he is playing this year, he is looking for another big pay day, last contract of sorts, probably around 20 M. not sure how much team can improve, except go the draft route and have another successful draft.....this is a mess Jones got us into, having bended for zeke, Lawrence, cooper and playing hardball with Dak. not sure where the logic is in that. and for that matter, most teams will keep their top player, bend for them and let older, lesser players walk...so not sure what ends up in FA to make the team better.....poe, McCoy are improvements, but not difference makers and impact players. we can always sign improvements (in cowboys fans minds)….

I think Dalton will be fine for 2-3 years (reminds of the Jim Plunkett story) which gives us time to groom the new Franchise QB.
Funny you mention that, I was thinking about the similarity between Plunktt and Dalton myself. Funny what a change of scenery to a better situation can do for a QB. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Cam in NE.

Wth does that last tweet even mean? Sadly I believe it has something to do with things that cant be spoke about here. I thought fandom had you rooting for a team and disliking others. If he's not a fan, fine, but don't make it something deeper lol

You're right. If they were going to sign Dak it should have been after his 3rd year. But they didn't and here we are. The sad part is, even if Dak kills it next year he will be too rich to sign. Lets say we get to the SB. What will his asking price be then? We can't sign him.

if we get to superbowl, then we can tag him again, and at 37M that would be good price. if we get to the superbowl, then we pay for a QB that can get you to the superbowl. you have a 4-5 year window you make a run. then you rebuild

Tagging him next season is most likely not an option.

The cap not raising because of the pandemic is going to make it really hard for the Cowboys to carry that cap #

A second franchise tag on Prescott would cost the Cowboys $37.68 million in 2021, regardless of what happens to the league's salary cap because of the coronavirus pandemic next season.

If the salary cap stays flat because of a lack of revenues for the NFL in the 2020 season, then the Cowboys could be in a challenging situation. The 2020 cap is $198.4 million. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the 2021 cap is projected to be $212 million based on normal circumstances, which would allow the Cowboys to have $36.2 million in room.

But if the cap does not increase, the Cowboys would be down to roughly $22 million in room if they don't carry over any unused space from 2020. It's easy to see that Prescott's $37.68 million tag would not fit under that cap amount and Dallas would have to get creative in its accounting.
