With a one year deal, Dak cannot become set in his ways. He will be more receptive to Mike McCarthy's instructions, and will once again be in training- albeit, being paid very well to do so, under the tag.
His contract demands showed he believed that he had reached a pinnacle, and was at the top of the league as far as talent. But he wasn't.
Though he racked up huge numbers in the passing game, he was not able to give the Cowboys a boost against teams that they needed to beat to transcend to the next level.
Under Garrett, Dak was in danger of believing that what he had done was enough; he was coddled and never made to improve. His demands for a new contract show this clearly.
Now we actually have a new team. McCarthy isn't saddled with a guy he's never worked with that will eat up a huge chunk of the salary cap, and can run the team as he sees fit.
If Dak is the man, this year will bear that out. If not, we'll see what's next.

While who knows what Garrett and staff made him do, or not do, to improve, it seems Dak took it upon himself to work on his game.
IMO I don't see Dak as a guy who could get lazy once the stupid money hit his bank account. Zeke and Clowney were two guys I thought of that could of gone that way, but everything I've read about Dak I just don't feel that way. Now of course who really knows.

I really felt last year it was a true team failure on why they went 8-8. Neutered offensive playcalling on the road, "special" teams mishaps, and a defense that was a sieve at times also were an issue. Now, I think Dak did pad his stats in some garbage time situations but I don't put all the blame on him for it getting to that point. He is no Blake Bortles.

Last sentence I can agree with. I think he'll be good this year under McCarthy/Moore and it will lead to more success in the W-L column.

I’d say Dak’s desire for a shorter contract shows he wanted to keep working hard so he could sign another huge contract sooner. I never got the impression Dak was difficult to coach.
You never know how he and McCarthy will get. This way is better for everyone.

So McCarthy isn't saddled with a QB that was a part of his decision to take the job. 6 months after taking the job.

hmm..

What I see is that the FO finally got clear on the need to have a capable backup that can step in and replace Dak if needed.

Competition is good for anybody. I never believed in Dallas not wanting to make players compete for their positions.

Every one of us who has a job knows the next guy behind you could replace you. Take your desk and your money and you get demoted or released.

That is especially true now with the pandemic. There is a ton of people out of work, few companies are hiring and companies can chose from higher quality applicants and pay them less than they were before.

I have always been a little squeamish about Dak as a 4th rd. draftee being handed the starting job with no competition to justify it.

2016 was fine but his next 3 years have sort of exposed his flaws as the records have been less satisfactory.

I would hope the team plays Dalton in the preseason and let Dak watch and observe.

We know what Dak can do. Not what Dalton will do.

Competition does what nothing else can. Dak will probably improve if he has a guy like Dalton around to help him much as when Romo was around.

We shall see.

These Dak threads are starting to give me brain hemorrhages.
This really isn't a Dak thread. It's more about the Cowboys finally getting set up right.
It wasn't fair to McCarthy to be saddled with a quarterback longterm that would be impossible to put on the bench if he wasn't cutting it.

I don't think Dak was ever set in his ways. All he ever talks about is getting better and improving his game. Also, I don't think any coach of the Dallas Cowboys gets to run the team as he sees fit. If JJ wants, he can fire MM for spittin on the wrong piece of concrete. We all really knows who runs the team. Just ask Parcells.

You are thinking of Zeke, not Dak.

As always, you are misinformed and off base. MM said one of the biggest reasons he came here was because of Dak. Dak has never been complacent and works his butt off.

Huh? McCarthy wasn't saddled on Dak. Why do you think he came to Dallas to begin with lol? He could've to Cleveland....what's so special about Dallas? He just can't wait to coach for Jerry? Dak was one of the perks of coming here.

Name me a new coach that ever walks into a perfect situation, other than Barry Switzter.
MM may love Dak, who knows.
MM may have serious doubts about Dak and wants a trial run on the tag, who knows?
