Then if you want to re-sign at that point you'll probably need about $120 million guaranteed. That's almost $200 million guaranteed given out in 3 years to Dak. And that is the best case scenario.

I can't believe I have to take Dak's side in this negotiation. Not even a big Dak guy.

Either give him the 4 year deal he wants (and is standard around the league) or give him $120+ guaranteed if you're going to insist he signs a 5 year deal. It's that simple. You cant ask him to sign a 5 year deal with the guaranteed money that comes on a 4 year deal.

I would've signed it anyway so there's some blame to put on Dak and Todd France but if you're looking at the NFL landscape and how things work, they're more in the right than the Cowboys are. If Dak ever makes it to free agency without getting hurt, he'll get $40 million AAV and more guaranteed money than what the Cowboys offered.

Why? I don't get your line of thinking. Just giving in to every player's salary demands leads to 8-8. Aren't you interested in winning?

You are talking about something else. I am sorta 50/50 fine with not being committed to Dak long term as a Cowboys fan. (We'll see. We might be crying to go 8-8 when we have Quincy Carter and Ryan Leaf types playing QB)

I'm saying Dak and his agent were more right than the Cowboys front office. Other QBs signed 4 year deals. If you want him to sign for 5, he needs more guaranteed money. His agent's job is to look out for his best interest, not the Cowboys future. This is a failure by the Cowboys front office (if they're sold on Dak). Any non biased source like Bob Sturm will tell you that.

So, you're saying that if a couple of teams sign players to really stupid contracts, then every team is obligated to do the same?

Other QB's signed 4 year extensions because they signed while still under contract meaning their respective teams still had them for 5 years

You say if he hits free agency he'll get $40m AAV....well he was probably looking for that anyway.

All these rumors that the last minute counter offer by DAK was for $35m for 2 years....but no mention of the other two (I would predict over $40m)

May as well get him tagged for two years and get him for 2 years at $35.5m.

The 4 year deal at $35m may have been just about doable....but the Cap would be tight for all 4 years (even with restructuring the existing bad contracts).

The 4th year we have the lowest CAP availability by $30m (other than Eagles, who at least have most of their contracts tied up) and is the reason why we wanted to spread it out through 5 years.

Not saying either party are right or wrong, it's just the situation.

Hey JJ this is Dak, just wanted you to know that the 5 year deal on the table looks great to me and that I'm real sorry I waited so long to sign on the dotted line. From what I understand the time frame to close this deal is closing real fast so I should be there in about 20 minutes. I'm stopping off at Starbucks do you want anything? JJ to Dak: No I don't want anything, as a matter of fact you might want to pickup an employment application while you're at the fancy coffee shop because that $100 million plus contract in now sitting in my guest restroom being used as butt wipe. Yeah, the 100mil gtd was just inappropriate for a 5 year deal. Less than Wentz and Goff got on their 4 year deals.

Similarly the AAV needs to be bumped up for a longer term deal.

Now, I don't know if that offer was really their final offer, as AFAIK, Dak has never given them a counter offer. Maybe they would have upped the money, or given up on the 5th year, if Dak had ever countered.

But as reported, the offer was too low as a 5 year offer, especially the gtd money.
