I don't blame Dak. And I don't blame the Joneses.

Both sides had legitimate reasons for acting in his own self-interest (Dak) or in the self-interest of the team's long-term salary cap situation.

It seems like it would be easier to deal with if, indeed, there was one side or the other to blame. But some of us honestly just can make a reasonable argument for both sides.

But it doesn't make me feel any better. In fact, like a lot of people who do blame someone, there remains an ominous feeling like this is just the beginning of the end of Dak in Dallas.

Its only blame from fan perspective.
Dak believes in himself, and I have respect for that.
This franchise believes in actually doing something for the first time since 1995.
Just where does that leave us as a fan base?
Totally polarized, thats where.

I don't blame anyone. Both sides have a point, it's a business decision. Both sides benefit short term from the way it was left.

In the end I think Dak may end up benefiting the most, and may mean he's not with Dallas anymore. I don't blame him if that's the best for him, and I don't blame Dallas if they don't feel they can be the ones to make his opportunity sufficiently lucrative for him or his agents.

As a fan, it sucks, but as a businessman and an executive I see this kind of stuff all the time.

So you’re blaming Dak? Why do you hate him so much?

They had a difference of opinion on Dak's value, the value of being the Cowboys' QB, and the future of the cap.

Thing is, I don't see much prospect for closing that difference of opinion. And the Cowboys really should move this year to capitalize on signing a starting quality QB so cheap in Dalton.

Trade Dak.
Dalton + Dak's trade value + 31.4 mil > Dak > Dalton

As someone who has seen more snaps of Andy Dalton than most, he is at best a low-end starter. The kind of starter you play when you know you are not trying to compete for a ring and are at best hoping to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card while looking for a real starter in the draft.

Theres a ton of people around here who believe that because they wish something to be the case, it is.

Finally some sanity from an OP. It is simple Dak thinks he is a top flight quarterback and is the next man up when it comes to getting paid. He is not taking less and wants another bite at the apple in four years. The Joneses are trying to manipulate the cap so they can keep frontline stars and maybe bring in some more defensive talent. The Cowboys want Dak and I believe he wants to be here. This will be a great season so let’s see what happens and worry about Dak’s contract next offseason.

I don't blame Dak. He's a pro. He has a right to pursue whatever kind of deal he wants. I just question the logic of giving up the most visible position in sports for the sake of getting every single cent out of a contract that he can. Money seems to be his priority and I don't think there's anywhere he'll make more more of it playing football than in Dallas.

I think you make an exceptional argument, I really do. I was all set to reply with my endorsement, when it occurred to me...

"Wait... I've seen Andy Dalton play for many years now, including playoff games... and in recent years, I've seen his durability become more of a question mark... so, given that most of us acknowledge that the QB almost cannot be underestimated in his importance in the quest for Super Bowl glory... do I really trust that Dalton's capable of getting us there?"

No, I don't.

Then, other side of that ledger... "Do I really trust that Dak is?"

I think so. It's at least certainly plausible at his age and given that he's played well enough to win playoff games.

So, I agree with the math on principle, but in light of the opinion I have that Dalton will win some games, but he's on the downside of a career that has gives me no reason to believe he's capable of leading a team to a playoff win, let alone a SB... I have to stick with the grass on this side of the fence.

It will be interesting to see if both sides maintain their posture on this negotiation after next season. I am really surprised Jerry didn't make a 4 year deal work. Neither player nor owner seem to be sold on the each other.
