How would you behave differently than other NFL players if you were one?

I’d do whatever I wanted too on the field, I’m no Boy Scout and it’s a mans game!! I’d know my role and excel...I’d take as much money as someone would give me...if it pay Ky don’t play...off the field I’d live the way I live now, family, buddies, cold beers and hot women!!!

I wouldn't laugh or smile after a bad play happens. They don't all do that, but you can tell for many this is a paycheck and not about pride. I'm very hard on myself when I make a mistake

Exactly. I am OK with players making mistakes - it happens to everyone. What I cannot stand is a grinning or "who cares" attitude about it.

Uh, what? It is possible for one player alone to have enormous impact on the salary cap, if he's a star player.

If a quarterback who had the skills of Brady agreed to take a salary of only $5 million per year, as opposed to $35 million a year, that would free up 30 million dollars per year under the cap. That is an enormous amount of cap space.

How many people do you know who would be willing to take an 85% pay cut "for the team"?

Maybe a player takes a 10% cut. 3.5mil is one meh free agent signing.

You can tell new money most of the time.

Nothing wrong with buying nice things. Its the class that separates people. Some think having money makes you classy. It doesn't. Lots of very rich people that have ZERO class or respect for others.

So if someone holds his pinky right when drinking a cup of tea and spends money then they have class? There have been 2nd and 3rd generation wealth that have made some pretty odd purchases. Also what you think is classy to others could be thought of as being anal and 17th century and others may think what you think is classy is actually bourgeois.

None of this has to do with all to many NFL players who spend money needlessly or foolishly instead of doing a better job of planning for the days when those big checks aren't coming in.

As far as lottery winners I remember when a girl on her eighteenth birthday from Minnesota or Michigan bought her first powerball ticket and won like 300 million dollars and then just 6 years later she filed for bankruptcy. and was living in a 1 room studio apartment and no longer had any car at all. She was part of a hour long docuspecial. There was another guy that was one of the original powerball winners who lived in a nice enough home that needed a little bit of repairs which he did and he bought both he and his wife new cars. About 16 years after winning the lottery he and his wife were traveling about 100 miles to see some relatives when a semi driver crossed the center line and hit their car. Both died from the crash and at that time he still had several millions of dollars that he left to several relatives. All the money from his lottery winnings didn't change that man much but like they said in that piece, that is the rarity.

I would seriously doubt his mental fitness if a Brady, Rodgers or Brees type QB signed a contract for only 5 mil a year when other QB's that have done much less were getting contracts for 30-35 mil a year. If I was an owner or coach I would say that QB took to many hits to the head and wouldn't trust him to be able to read defenses or even remember the plays in the playbook. I would ask myself is this a mature adult or a kid. Yes it would be great to have all that money to work with but mentally the QB would be to unstable to rely on.

If I were an NFL player behaving differently, I'd be more devoted to winning than with achieving personal acclaim!

You're absolutely right. You weren't allowed in high school. But even in the 1000 sandlot games I played I didn't spike it either.
Hell, no, then you had to go chase the ball wherever the ball went. Lol

Suppose you suddenly had the abilities of a Randy Moss or Tom Brady, and were promoted to starter on the Cowboys (or any other team). Since you have not been steeped in NFL culture, would you behave differently than most players, and if so, how?

Would you be willing to accept a much lower pay than others (for the sake of maximizing salary cap space?)

Would you showboat and dance a lot less than the other players (or, maybe, celebrate even more?)

Would you maintain a much lower public profile, buy much less gaudy stuff?

Would you call out the sports media on their BS, much more aggressively than others?
I'd take less money as long as it was fully utilized and the owner wasn't trying to make money from it by under spending on cap.
No show boating. Be respectful to other team and have some humility.
Stand for the national anthem.
Drive a Chevy Silverado.
Build. Tiny house villages for those that are homeless and willing to work.
Pay my tithes.
Invest the rest of my money

Great question.

1) Whatever splurging I did would be treated like vacation spending. ie, its occassional not the norm. My primary goal financially would be to end my career set for life (barring some bizarre level of bad luck)
2) I wouldn't try to keep up with the "Jones". Its easy to fall into "they have cool stuff, I want it too."
3) Would have a nice place to live (but not extravagant) and a reliable ride for sure. But probably a condo or townhome where amenities are available. I would want to travel in my free time so easier not to have a standalone home. I would probably rent RV when i could travel but I could see buying one at some point.
4) I definitely would not go ego crazy ala Antonio Brown and think the whole world revolved around me.
5) I would want to be paid fairly but not simply chasing the "highest paid player at my position" title.
6) I would set up money for family but i would probably use annual gift of significance but not making them wealthy. Also there would the express understanding that if "anyone" asks me for money they are instantly & permanently cut off. Its there as a gift to help them, not an unending crutch. I would only do this for immediate family. Each sibling would be responsible for how they distribute to their children. They would also be responsible for making sure their kids don't call me asking for money. Set a hard line that you are not an ATM.

Would you be willing to accept a much lower pay than others (for the sake of maximizing salary cap space?) probably yes, not real low but
significantly lower, for example as qb, I would take 25 mil a year, if owner would let me have a say in how the extra 10 mil was spent.
I might even go lower if I thought the team had a real chance at a SB if we got 1 or 2 particular players.

Would you showboat and dance a lot less than the other players (or, maybe, celebrate even more?).....yes for sure

Would you maintain a much lower public profile, buy much less gaudy stuff?.....yes for sure

Would you call out the sports media on their BS, much more aggressively than others?...... I might if allowed, that might be against team rules.

I would expect to get paid like others in the league, outside of business I would play the game to the best of my ability and life my life as I do now.

Easy. I would buy a house in Montana or CO and live in an apartment in the city I played for during the season. I would invest the majority of my money until I at least retired. I would keep a very low profile, eat out occasionally and do most of my drinking at home or a hole in the wall.

If I scored a TD I would run over and hand the ball to the ref or perhaps spike it with anger depending on the team we were playing and the score.

I would trust no one and wouldn’t get involved in a serious relationship until I retired. I would troll other teams message boards under fake name.

I wood also take less money to play for a team who was well managed, owned and if I liked the majority of my teammates at the time, I wouldn’t want to play with selfish divas who are only there for the pay check.

I would also do something to help autistic children, or even adults, like get them a sideline pass during a game, something that they would never forget and you couldn’t put a price tag on.

So basically I wood pretty much live the same life I do now minus the house in MT or CO and a few other other things. Oh...and I would smoke all the weed Mother Earth could provide.
