People my age became NFL fans in an era where the Oilers were almost always pretty bad, and the Cowboys were always Super Bowl contenders, although admitted the Earl Cambell/Dan Pastorini/Bum Phillips years were pretty entertaining. But from the outset the team in Houston was always kind of an afterthought for a lot of people in Texas.

Even since the Texans have been in the NFL they have been mostly irrelevant except the last few years, and they don't even have the ability to harken back to the "good old days".

There were Oiler players like Center Carl Mauck, who hated the Cowboys and us fans here in Houston:

During the 1977 preseason, Mauck became so fed up with the saturation of the Star in Houston that he spent a post-victory interview saying he would gladly help geographically confused Cowboys fans relocate from the Bayou City to that other city up north. Then he took to the airwaves to strengthen his sermon.

"All you people that love them, I've got a buddy here that will move you up there at a great price," Mauck recalled saying. "Why don't you just move up there if you love them so much?"

Thirty-seven years later: "You can't believe all the calls and all the crap that came out. I irritated the living (crap) out of them."

Throw a rock at a group of guys in a sports bar in Houston and you will likely hit a Cowboys fan

There is no hate in the Houston area for us, more like the jealous red-headed stepchild syndrome

I live in Houston (25yrs) and have been a Cowboys fan since 1970. The AM radio fans HATE the Cowboys. The radio announcers are pretty fair. I went to a pre-season game Cowboys vs Texans and took some razzing for wearing the best QB in NFL history Tony Romo's jersey. Drunken tailgaters wanted to fight, but my Texan buddies just pushed those guys away.

Funny thing is, that particular game there were so many fights that the Texan fans started, that they changed the tailgating rules that you can only show up a few hours before the game. No more getting there 6 hours before and partying all day. My friends completely blame Cowboy fans for this even though they saw first hand it was scum Texan fans instigating the confrontations. LOL

TLDR - Texan fans hate us, and they really hate us when we say we don't even care.
I take the family to one Cowboys game a year, I drive past Houston on the way to Dallas. I will never take my family to a cowboys vs texans game in houston due to the hate and for my family's safety. I remember the game that you refer to, I heard that it was texans vs texans fighting after that game also.

They think that we have a rivalry but we just don't care enough for it to be two ways.

Our rivalry is kinda like the one between the hammer and the nail.

I have been making a monthly trip to Houston for the past 8 years. I get along fine with the Texans fans there. The sports bars were very accommodating of Cowboys fans from my experience, and no one ever gave me hard time for watching my team.

I almost never set foot in Houston (maybe a grand total of 3 times in twenty years)........how bad do they really hate the Cowboys? Does it compare anywhere near to Cowboys hate in Philadelphia, Washington DC or New York?

Safe, or have Dallas fans ever been in physical jeopardy in H-Town?
good-natured ribbing is all there is.
a lot of those folks were cowboys fans before the Texans came into play
Once the Oilers became the Titans they were Dallas fans.

Def bigger rivaly in basketball and baseball.

Let me just say I was born in Houston and went to school for a couple of years in elementary at Holy Ghost.. I moved to North Richland Hils when I was 6 and never looked back.. I've always been safe in Forth Worth, but each time I've gone back to houston I've been shot at.. Once at a restaurant, and another at a gas station.. This was random gang stuff but I was in wrong part of town I guess, but either way, Houston is filled with horrible crime, it's worthless.

Of course, that's just a general statement about Houston and not related to whether a person is a Cowboy fan in Houston. As with most large cities, the biggest key to staying safe is to not wander into high crime areas. That's not foolproof of course, but no place is completely free of random violence.

Spent 20 years in Houston. It's not dangerous to be a Cowboys fan there, at least it wasn't for me.
I will tell you one thing though, Houston fans spend alot more time thinking about the Cowboys than the Cowboy fans spend thinking about the Texans.
But, that's similar in most cities, since Dallas is so universally popular.

I’m in DC and there are plenty of Cowboys fans. These rivalries seem pretty much dead nowadays.

I have lived in Houston 51 years and the level of so called hate varies. In the 70's when Dallas was consistently a top team there was a lot of hate from Oiler fans, again in the early 90's with Cowboys success you had many Houston fans who would tell me how much they hated the Cowboys. In more recent times the success has not been there and not much is said. Having said that I catch hell all the time from friends on co workers who are Texan fans and do not like the Cowboys at all but it is also all in fun and good natured ribbing. I would also add there has always been a rivalry between the Cities of Houston and Dallas beyond sports

I have lived in Houston metro area for the last 14 years. I do agree with your comment, its almost always fun but I will say this and it makes no sense to me personally.

If I asked 1000 Dallas Cowboy fans which teams they hated the most in order... Texans would be way to the bottom of the list.

You do the same With Texans Fans and the Cowboys would be in their top 2 or 3.

I think it really pisses them off that Dallas fans don't really care about the Texans one little bit.. but they love to hate the Boys.

Please....IDK who yall talk to, but I have been in Houston since 1979. I am a lifelong Cowboys fan since the days of Chuck Howley, Mel Renfro, Bullet Bob, Calvin Hill Duane Thomas, Leroy Jordan, Bob Lilly, Roger the Dodger, Craig Morton and Cornell Green. At any rate, I have extremely close friends & family whom I have allowed to live in my house, borrow my car, loaned & given money...& who talk to me like a dog when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys versus their beloved Texans. I can't even begin to describe the hateration thrown my way for being a Boys fan in Houston. Not only them but all Texan fans whom I've met on the street turn their noses up 7 frown in disgust when they see a Cowboy logo or fan. They literally despise us all the while wanting to be us. They cannot stand our popularity even though we have not won a title in 25 years. They can't wrap their hands around why we are still called America's Team and lead the tv ratings year after year.

Listen to their talk radio shows...they will NEVER give the Boys any credit, they always highlight any bad press...so absolutely their is immense hatred in Houston when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys.

When we speak of 5 SB titles, they say that is old but they love to highlight what is known to them as "19-10" which is what most real Texan fans consider their biggest accomplishment...lol! By the way they have never won ANYTHING worth a trophy other than a divisional title.
This^^ they hate us Cowboy fans

One year the Houston Texans beat the Cowboys in a regular season game.

They wrote a book about it.

The old Houston Oilers fight song had a line that said, "Best in the Lone Star State"

There were only two NFL teams in Texas.

What Houston NFL fans hate the most about Cowboy fans is our indifference towards their team. They are like that annoying little brother that you try to shake off so you can go have fun with your friends but mom says you have to watch him.

Most people in Houston are Cowboys fans.

Living here as a Cowboys fan, I find this completely untrue. I wear my Cowboys gear all the time and while I meet plenty of Cowboys fans much more often I get in talks with Texans fans. All are friendly with very few exceptions.
