Some guy in Virginia trademarked a lot of possible names. I guess they didn't meet his price. :muttley:

Hardly a big deal. They probably have trademark and other issues to work through to pick a new name and likely couldn't work through it in just a few weeks.

According to local insiders here in the DMV, they have a name picked out but there are copyright and branding issues that won't get resolved before the start of the season. This is just a placeholder "supposedly". I heard all the supposed "names" ie., Sentinels, Warriors, Generals, etc.. won't be the new team name.

I understand the move and branding something and overhauling everything logo wise is a big task

but i would be kind of ashamed if my team rolled out as the “Dallas Football Team”

They’re serious lol

Dumb. Thank you corporate America for threatening the masses with your deep pockets to force change that wasn't necessary.

If Snyder had any balls he would have just changed sponsorship from FedEx field to something else, kept the 'Commanders' name, and told FedEx to go (F word that rhymes with truck) themselves.

For clarity purposes, the reason the Washington Football Team is proceeding in this manner has more to do with marketing analysis and the legal process than showing some kind of incompetence.

Deciding on a name that works socially, economically and legally, is not a short process. Once their attorneys file the trademark application(s), it may take 4-6 months for each application to be reviewed by an attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). That was prior to COVID 19 and the altered work arrangements we have all gone through. While under review, USPTO attorneys will check to ensure the TM application doesn't have mistakes and the mark doesn't conflict or possibly lead to confusion in commerce with another mark. So that can lead to the process taking even longer.

This isn't a short process at all. I have filed many, many in my legal career.

If its not a short process why were they able to change the name so quickly to "The Washington Football Team?" They literally changed the logo, the uniform and the team name. The old name is erased just like that. So is it faster if you just pick a crappy name?

So they ignored my advice to keep at least some of the name?

That's too bad. I really thought the Washington Foreskins had an interesting ring to it. I was looking forward to seeing their new mascot on live TV.

Better stock up on all that marked down gear then.

Read that once the Commanders officially dropped that name the NFL informed all companies that stocked official NFL Commander merchandise that they had to pull it and not sell anymore. I'm not sure whether the league or Commanders will have to reimburse those companies for that merchandise.

I'm not sure a name can be trademarked, to force someone to pay to use it.

Sure it can. A factory worker spent his entire life's savings getting the name America's Team copy writed . His wife divorced him over it because she thought it was a waste of their money but he also became a multi millionaire doing it. Just about every business copy writes their trademark. Whatever name the Commanders chose it won't just be that name that gets copy writed but the Washington (the name) together that will get copy writed.
