Rookie receiver Stephen Guidry opted out. A big part of it was he knew he had little chance of making the team. He saw what we have at the position and said nope!

These undrafted players know they need preseason games to make teams. With no OTA’s, rookie camps and preseason games teams are going to stay with their draft picks.

Crikey anyone see the new deal for Bosa!

Makes the Lawrence contract look fine in comparison.

Charges paid Bosa a fair bit more than Garrett who was on target for 16 sacks last season and 29.5 sacks over two seasons.

Ummmmm the same "special" skill that allows them to earn millions while you don't......... freakish athletic skills. You may hate it but they've lucked (or worked) into a career that gives them this kind of flexibility.

Whether a person makes millions or minimum wage at McDonalds' so our people can eat during this crisis is not the deciding factor; its a sense of work ethic to the customers and fans that should be a consideration to show up and produce

The millions in salary only factor in that they can afford to stay at home too scared to work while the real people who make the trains run on time and flip your burgers don't have that luxury

War Daddy? Seriously?......more like a cream puff

Yeah I mean its a business decision at this point. It really makes no sense for those guys to even play with no preseason. Though.......I would think with a new coaching staff and basically only 3 receivers set in stone....you might can get on this roster with possibly 3 rosters available. But that's a lot of money to give up.

I believe he's got a pregnant wife and is concerned about that, which I wouldn't blame him for one bit. This thing hits some people differently and some minorities are seemingly at greater risk.

You are right. A least that was the reason he gave.

Congrats to Demarcus Lawrence for following his best instincts to do what's best in both his interest and that of this team. I'm proud of him for arriving at that decision. I'm sure he had conversations with his wife and came to the conclusion that the best way he could serve her and his family was to provide for their welfare as best as possible to ensure their wellbeing. I'd have done exactly the same in his position. Let's hope that decision serves them well and that of the team. also. Several crucial things hung in the balance in coming to that decision. I couldn't possibly be more respectful of it. :)

Maybe he had conversations with his wife. What makes me wonder: he first makes a decission to not participate. Now he changes it. didnt he made the decission with his wife together the first time?

No i dont believe that it was about talking it over. Maybe they talked together but not because of the possible infection by the corona virus. I do think now that the league made it clear people will lose money when they opt out he decided that the well being of his wife and child wasnt that important ;-). The danger of the corona virus was just a welcomed reason to sit out training camp again.

Realistically he could self isolate with the amount of money he is making. 20 million vs 350K.
I would make sure my family is isolated for the newborn.

Guy just looked for a reason to sit out camp.

How much they get paid is irrelevant.

No, no. It's ALWAYS relevant. This thread is Exhibit A. Jealous regular joe pikers will always have a problem with players being paid. They'll swear it's about the salary cap although this player's already been paid, lol. If they want that luxury as well, maybe they should WORK HARDER, not to mention exercising some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY which would channel their time into improving themselves versus ogling another man's pockets to frustrate themselves.

Not saying you're wrong or right, just saying the reason for caution he has is very legit in 100% of homes in this country, some have the luxury of a choice and some need to pay the rent is really the difference.

It's an interesting decision that each individual has to make. And I do not begrudge anyone for making the decisions that they do make. There is no right or wrong answer in this situation and everyone has the right to do as they see fit.

First i was surprised he changed his decission. But then i quickly came to the same conclusion.
I don’t know how many fans have seen what the NFL is allowing regarding “opt out” players. The NFL and the NFLPA made an agreement a few weeks ago that allows any NFL player to choose not play this season based on pre-determined conditions. Those players choosing to opt out for the season who are under contract will be paid a one time stipend between $150,000 and 350,000 depending on veteran status.

Players have to decide before an upcoming deadline if they choose to opt out. Currently, there are nearly 30 players across the league that have chosen to avoid the season, including two spare backup players from the Cowboys, Maurice Canady and Stephen Guidry.

Veteran Players opting out for health reasons must qualify based on current/prior health conditions such as cancer, sickle cell anemia, type 1 and 2 diabetes, asthma, Kidney disease, etc. Qualifications can also include those with immediate family members with these conditions.

Not a great business decision for a rookie free agent. This is an opportunity lost for them. The veterans who are opting out have guaranteed money. They really have nothing to lose. Role players are taking a big risk because whoever takes their place could end up taking their job if they perform well.

Yeah but the odds are already stacked against them. He has to battle guys like Noah Brown and Cedric Wilson who were draft picks.

That’s the main reason he opted out. Not having any preseason game tape to put out there for other teams really puts these undrafted rookies behind the eight ball. It’s going to be very difficult for any of them to make teams based strictly off of practices and scrimmages. There’s only so many opportunities they’re going to get in practice with 80 players. Some players are gamers that’s where they shine. All it takes is a couple of really good plays in a preseason game for a rookie to make a team or another team. With the situation we’re in most teams are going to stay with their draft picks.
