Chad Johnson: 'I took Viagra before every game' to get around PED rules
By Erin Walsh | Last updated 7/29/20
Chad Johnson revealed something pretty major about his NFL career on Tuesday night.

The former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver said he would take Viagra before games to boost his performance. While many thought Johnson was joking, he replied to a tweet saying: "No it wasn’t a joke, I really took viagra before games, the increase in blood flow made me unbelievable [sic] explosive in & out of my routes."

As for why Johnson took Viagra? He admitted it was a way to get around the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.

How much would that really help though

I looked that up a while back. There didn't seem to be any conclusive evidence of whether it helped or not. It is supposed to increase blood flow, but I also think it drops blood pressure. And I believe one of the possible side effects is sinus congestion, which if that occurs doing the game you are reducing oxygen flow. I doubt there are any extensive research studies on the matter. I couldn't find any. I just assume it can help, but I don't think it would be a dramatic increase.

It's probably like the myriad of things that work for some, but not others. Even if it's all psychological, it's still a positive if he gets positive results.

I think they stopped some years ago. I did in HS though and getting hit in some situations really hurt, especially when a jewel was poking outside the rim! :lmao2:

LOL!!!! That is what the jock is supposed to prevent! But hey, I didn't need no big ol' cup. My junk was lost in there. I just switched it out with a thimble. I was then able to run freely.

I did not wear a cup playing HS ball in the 90's only got hit their twice, both times in practice by a team mate. I did wear one when I was a Fullback my sophomore season, I figured that would be prudent.

Well at least he was assured that he’d have 8 inches of separation between himself and the DB.....

Played from late 80s to early 00s. The only guys who seemed to wear cups were older players on OL and DL.

Actually a lot if the Viagra did what Chad Johnson stated (I don't know by the way).

But factually,The quicker flow of oxygenated blood to body and subsequent removal of Carbon dioxide quicker will physically help the body become more explosive and quicker recovery.

Ochocinco endurance and stamina over the entire game is sure sign of impressive Cardiovascular system
