the first year doesn’t replace the final year, just gives him some signing bonus money during that last year. It’s a 27 million dollar a year extension. Yes including the final year of his rookie deal brings the avg down for the duration, but there’s no reason to do that.
Honestly, AAV should never be considered. Cap hits and contractual escapability is what's important.
AAV is a joke.

basically. Just the easiest point of comparison, even if it’s flimsy

Is looking like a good/fair deal. Not a bargain, but he's now being paid relative to where he is at positional ranking wise.

Yearly average
Joey Bosa 27 million (crazy high)
Miles Garrett 25 million
Khalil Mack 23.5 million
D Lawremce 21 million
Frank Clark 20.8 million

Good thing is that the front office hasn't restructured his deal so after the 2021 season he can be let go with minimal cap damage, if his play drops off.

It is VERY unlikely the not restructured part of that holds up after this offseason though. His, and a few others, are likely to be restructured to adjust for the blip that is the lower cap next year.

Ya it’s almost like contracts are continuing to go up in the nfl and this common sense logic can be applied to other contracts situations...
Eureka!?
:hammer:
Think it's crazy wait until the new TV Contract in 2023. Owners got $90M each 2010 and $225M each 2019

NFL is a juggernaut

He's paid like those guys. It's just unfortunate he's not as good as any of those guys.

Mack hasn't done much in Chicago, especially last season.

Garrett was suspended for a boneheaded move that could have cost him his career.

Bosa is good and disruptive. But 27 million? Jeez

I don’t think he Bosa deal is 27. I am pretty sure it is a 5 year extension, but a 6 year deal. The first year replaced the final deal in his rookie contract. It comes out to around 23 per.

Post #19 has it right. An extension by definition does not replace anything. Contract renegotiations and restructures do. No part of a rookie contract is ever replaced.

Same thing will happen with anybody that signs a contract. For example, if Dak was signed to a 35 million a year contract it would be 2nd highest for a year. That's why it's silly when people say he shouldn't get paid top money because he isn't the best QB.
Yep, too bad he refused to sign for that.

You will hear you can't just go by sacks, there is more to being a DL than sacks. Quinn's photo is in the dictionary for that.
Exactly, I don’t think too many DE‘s have got big pay days or are considered worth those pay days for having few sacks but being good at everything else they do. I hate hearing the double team excuse too, like none of those other guys are ever double teamed

DLaw is 28.

he still has a few seasons left.

I think 31/32 will be the cut off.

Bosa missed a bunch of games through injury in his rookie season, missed over half of the 2018 season through injury. He is effectively being paid JJ Watt money but...look at what they both did through their first four years. The Charges can afford it due to their QB situation but crikey they have paid such a premium. Classic case of a team overpaying a player and it just doesn't bode well for them longer term. I always think what would Belichick do...he would have in all likelihood traded him and my stance would be the same. Get the value then ship them out. It might sound horrible but if you want to win a Superbowl and players are not elite and/or on reasonable contracts for the team then good bye.

Nice post.
I dont agree with either of you other than yes 27mil is way high for any player IMo including qbs..they need to come down and start having caps on how much a single player can make..

however citing the games missed by Bosa propping up more, he averaged 10 sacks a year of you take his entire career but take out missed games hes avg what 14sacks year..he is a high production elite DE..tank is NOT tanks should have got 16mil IMO even in hindsight..he has 40 sacks in 49 games, isnt that like les sthen 3 seasons of play, 40 sacks!

thats why he got paid Add TFL and other stats he is elite..

Well there was when folks wanted to point out that Dak got fair offers yielding the same amount guaranteed for 5 years that Goof and Wench got with their 4 year extensions. No one wanted to have that discussion though.
