As for melodies. This from an artist no one knew much about even back then beside his one big hit 'Crying In The Chapel'. This song here was played live before an audience at the Big D Jamboree (Dallas, TX) circa mid to late 50's.

Man on left btw is 50's rocker Gene Vincent

Now compare this to the original version which got alot of radio airplay i'm guessing.

Every decade has it's share of suck music. Every one. But the almost decade of my teen years, 1968-1975, had the most amount of music that didn't suck, over any other period, imho.

Well Disco was a big staple during that period. (checking wiki for years active.)

I disagree, there is great music, you just have to find it and not expect it to be served to you. It is one of the most subjective forms of creativity we will experience.

One mistake is confusing radio listeners with music listeners, they're not really connected.

I was spoiled as I was an impressionable tweener when rock and roll emerged and a lad of 16 when it changed forever for me with the British Invasion. It was all coming so fast and so much of it that I could hardly digest it but I could not get enough of it. It was a time in music never to be matched again and if you were there you were spoiled.

Then FM came into reality for more than elevator music and the Album Oriented Rock format was born and the second major music changing event had happened with the first one still fresh and new forms of rock, progressive and metal, were emerging and there was an abundance of riches.

The third wave has been the emergence of streaming and the focus has returned to the 50's with songs being the 45's, the album does not exist as it once did.

I spent most of my career working around much younger people so I was more aware of the current trends in music and I can recall them saying there will never be 80's oldies as the Oldies format was beginning to emerge at that time. Well, they were wrong.

When Rock morphed into Grunge, I couldn't stand it and never gave it a chance but I could not relate to it and the destruction of the tried and true rock composition formula was heresy. Later, as I did with the 80's and emerging Alternative music, I opened my ears and my mind.

Every generation detests the next generation's music, my parents didn't like mine and we didn't like Rap and break dancing when our oldest son got into it. "What the hell is that? That's not music, that's crap". Every generation could sell that on a t shirt.

My contemporaries are shocked to know this old rocker spends the majority of his listening time to forms of Electronica, House, Trance, Chill, EDM and Alternative. I don't do Oldies or Classic Rock except on rare occasions because I do not agree that the music died, it just changed.

We made a big deal out of 500,000 people gathered for Woodstock and most are unaware of the 1,500,000 gathered for a DJ Rave because the one thing that hasn't changed about music, it is communal, it is tribal.

This here is pretty accurate, we forget we're mainly hearing the greatest hits of that era, not the fluff that was next to it as well, etc. In 20 years I'm sure there will be plenty of gems mixed in with the Biebers and Drakes of the world.

The modern music I listen to doesn't suck
But then again I don't listen to mainstream music.
If I named my top 10 favorite bands chances are you would've never heard of most of them.

Funny you bring this up as I have been going on (in the music thread) about how, the older I get, the more and more I find that artists sample each other more than I ever knew. I will know a song I've liked since I was a teenager and then somebody in the music thread will drop the original song (that I never knew about) and it will blow my mind. This hasn't been just a once or twice occurrence either. Just a ton of songs I've found. It's interesting to me but it also kind of knocks those songs down a notch for me in the originality department. So, yeah, I can see how so much music sounds like alike these days with everybody sampling each other. Plus, to think about time, you wonder how much more original you can get in the next, say 100 years, when everything has been already been done. I can see more and more sampling and cover songs being done.

--Which brings me to my quick side thought: You ever think about how media will age? Say in 150 years somebody will hear a Def Leppard track and be like "Wow! This is a good track. It's 180 years old!" haha Trips me out. --

Back to topic, this is definitely a fine line for me as I can agree with both sides. While I would say the majority of "today's" music sucks, there is still good music out there. You may just have to look for it a little bit more deeper than times past. Though I can say, in my opinion, mainstream has absolutely gone downhill. I do find some new artists (The Weeknd) that I absolutely love though, so, it's out there. Plus, I just think it has to do with generations. The music I grew up with has nostalgic ties to my life, so, of course I will argue that it was great music. My daughter's generation my claim in 25 years that Post Malone was great music. It just really depends on the generation listening I think.

As a music lover though, I'm super open-minded to any genre, so just give me good music. :D
