And we must also remember Jerry was instrumental in revolutionary streams generating revenue which when he came into the league was driven by success on the field.

Indirectly his contributions enabled all teams to generate revenue without success on the field. These contributions were enough for his induction into the HOF not his contributions on the field.

Totally agree. There is no pressure to win. Only pressure to remain relevant. He builds just a good enough team to sell hope and retain interest.

And we do see many of the top revenue generating and profit making business not producing or selling the best products in the marketplace. They have simply become the biggest mass marketing their brand much like many iconic staples in America.

Jerry has followed this American ingenuity model. And his celebrity status which you correctly described is all part of it with the most Iconic brand in football and perhaps all of sports. Winning or having one of the best products isn’t necessary.
Look no further for proof than an 8-8 team negotiating with a mid level QB dominating the sports scene. I don't think I tired more quickly with anything in my life. It wasn't even an event to me.

What's amazing is that people still try to claim that Jerry wants to win. A guy who wants to win will do whatever it takes to win. Jerry refuses. He does not want to win, he wants to be accepted as a football guy. And doesn't even understand that that ship sailed long ago. Part of me wonders if the guys didn't put him in the HOF as an owner just so he'd keep pathetically and desperately naming himself GM so they wouldn't have to worry about beating the Cowboys to get to the super bowl. Jerry's teams always have weaknesses easily exploited by good teams.
And you don't get credit for 'wanting to win' anyway. That is the minimum acceptable standard for an owner, yet it gets touted by Jerry fans as some kind of virtue.

Yep

They are echoing Jerry’s message. And obvious why Jerry’s message has been effective with this segment of fans.

I believe it was "Booger wants to win more than any other owner" which was not as funny as "he's the best owner, just not a good GM". I would always ask "what is the primary responsibility of the owner"? Crickets.

He is not only one of the worst GM's, he's the worst owner for accepting mediocrity and promoting it. As an owner, he is all too forgiving of the GM.

Stephen may be able to replace Jerry Jones, the man that is his father. However, he could never replace the wisdom.

How could anyone ever expect Stephen to espouse such timeless quotes as the following Jerry Jones's classics:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Emmitt Smith is a luxury, not a necessity for the Cowboys," - When told that Emmitt was holding out at the beginning of the 93 season. The Cowboys would lose their first two games causing Charles Haley to throw his helmet up against the wall and demand that Emmitt be signed....which Jerry promptly did. Hey, nobody is that dumb. The Cowboys would ultimately end up in the Super Bowl with Emmitt as the MVP.

"I have to be a realist, I hadn't thought or hoped that we'd be sitting here after the sixth game making these adjustments. … I did not want to this year go to an inexperienced quarterback. I wanted to have the benefit of Drew Bledsoe. It hasn't worked out as of today. It just hasn't worked out. That to me is a step back." - Jerry's reaction to Bill Parcell's decision to bench Drew Bledsoe and replace him with Tony Romo making that game Tony's first NFL start

"I'm still so damn mad at Stephen, I get madder, every day, about missin' (Manziel). There's only one thing I wanna say -- I'd have never bought the Cowboys had I made the kinda decision that I just made right now, You need to drive across the water rather than lay up. And we laid up for this one. ... We just didn't get here makin' this kind of decision. I listened to everybody... and I'm ... not ... happy ..." - Jerry's reaction to not drafting Johnny Manziel

"If we had picked Manziel, he'd guarantee our relevance for 10 years." - Ditto

"He has the potential to be the kind of back that would step in there and be a No. 1 back, If he were not here, then I wouldn’t feel as good as we go into the season about what might happen." - Jerry's explanation as to why he didn't resign last NFL season's leading rusher and new Cowboy record holder for most rushing yards in a season. He had "Klepto Joe" Randle....who was cut before the end of the season after committing his third felony.

"This quarterback Weeden can drive the ball down field. He's a thing of beauty on throwing a football. His passing motion and his arm, frankly, you won't see a more gifted passer, power, accuracy, the entire aspect of it" - describing the quality backup QB he signed in the offseason. Tony Romo did go down with an injury and Weeden replaced him for three games....all losses. Weeden was promptly replaced.

“Would you get embarrassed if you were standing in this stadium? Seriously? The answer is no.” In 2015 Jerry was asked if he felt embarrassed by the Cowboys 4-12 performance after going 12-4 the previous season. This told fans everything they wanted to know about Jerry Jones's priorities."

"There are 500 coaches who could have won the Super Bowl with our team." - A statement he made prior to Jimmy Jonson's departure. After the Cowboys lost to the 49ers the following season, many began to wonder why Jerry hired Coach #501.

"The only way to break out is to gamble – take a chance with that first pick if you wanna dramatically improve your team." - Jerry describing his brilliant drafting philosophy in the 1st round. Screw research, analysis, and team needs, just roll the dice! Of course, this bold strategy was vacationing in the Bahamas the year Jerry passed over Randy Moss.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What can I say, Stephen.......dare to dream.

All comes back to the same fact, people will believe what they want to believe and seek out only the evidence and proof of that.

We've been seeing here for years that Booger passed the torch yet there he is, all eyes on him in the 3rd round with the guy supposedly in charge wanted to take the trade and with one word, discussion over. Yep, he's not in charge anymore. Wishful thinking creates those easily fooled.

Yup.

It's like Jerry bought NASA and appointed himself lead scientist and insisted on doing all the experiments himself.

Since Jerry bought the team back in 89, after 24 years of being GM, this is what he had learned: "If you have a mobile QB, you don't need a good OL."

Anyone who supports Jerry as GM, just think about that. How do you still have that belief after 24 years?
I like the analogy someone posted last week about the way JJ runs this team...
He’s like a restaurant owner who also wants to be the head chef and maitre’ d. And wants to buy all the food. And all his children are chefs too.

A quarter of a century of this kind of thinking gets you zero divisional playoff wins. And JJ and SJ talk and talk every year about how surprised they are they haven’t won anything lately. As if it’s all because “Lady Luck” just hasn’t shown up at their craps table lately.

Just a general shout out Bob. This may be a slightly regurgitated and often discussed OP but the quality responses from you, coach, plastic, ksk, art, valkyr, diehard and the list goes on has been a breath of fresh air of reading enjoyment for me. Great job to you and all the others.

Go Cowboys

Stephen and Jerry keep telling you who they are each and every chance they get.

The reason there are so many instances of their flawed comments and logic, as evidenced in the OP's post, is that there is zero accountability for their poor football decisions.

Yet, there are fans still who try to make excuses for them. "McClay runs the draft"...McClay told you how they make decions in the aftermath of the Taco decision over TJ Watt. "McCarthy is in charge".. Sure, McCarthy is the one true amazing coach who finally convinced the Jones' to concede power after a quarter century of them always demanding they have the final say on roster decisions.

My latest favorite is that it was all Garrett. As if Garrett was fooling the Jones for 10 years and they were just innocent bystanders and completely unaware of his obvious and continued ineptness.

Excellent post.

We all know Jerry Jones is by his own design, the centerpiece and de-facto face of this franchise. He’s as hooked on TV cameras and microphones as a crack addict. He can talk for 30 minutes and make absolutely no sense.

But in the last 8 years, Stephen Jones has slowly become more the real spokesman of what the team is doing. I still believe Jerry owns the final say with this team, but Stephen’s comments tend to make a little more sense, and often are the better predictor of what this team is going to do. Even with Stephen more up front, the results haven’t been a lot different than the previous two decades. Unlike his old man though, he tends to speak in complete sentences with mostly proper syntax.

But where SJ is a chip off the old block is the empty BS that rolls off his tongue like a used car salesman instead of a straight shooting NFL executive.

Here are some samples of quotes from Stephen Jones since 2012, and how often he tries to sell the fans a lot the same way his dad does.
  • Sept, 2012-Stephen Jones: “We’ve got to get it done. We are very motivated. We feel like we are right there. I totally feel like we’ve got the right guy in Jason Garrett.”

  • Aug. 2013- "We're convinced we've got the secret sauce to put this thing back together again and win championships," Stephen Jones said, “We can always be better.”

  • Nov 2013- (Regarding his “secret sauce” comment) “It was a careless comment that quite candidly, I wish I could take it back”, Jones told 105.3-FM The Fan this week. “I was having a light moment with some of the [reporters] and I let that slip.”

  • April, 2014- “The only thing the cap issues have do with us is we can’t be big players in free agency. I think history will tell you that being a big player in free agency is overrated.”
  • Aug. 2015- “We believe we are right there to win another championship.”

  • Aug. 2016 “I mean, I’m worried every day that we don’t get a championship. You worry about that all the time. That’s why we’re very aggressive in trying to get there, whatever it takes. It’s just not acceptable in our minds that we haven’t been able to win a championship in so long. I do worry about that. I worry about that all the time.”
  • May, 2018-on paying Dak when times comes: “Yeah, you know at that position, you gotta pay- it kind of is what it is,” Jones said Wednesday at the team’s annual golf tournament. “You kind of, when the time comes, [expect to pay him]. I know Dak is going to have a good year this year. I hope it’s up there. It’s going to be as he deserves. He was a fourth-round pick. No one deserves to get paid fairly more than he does.”

  • Oct. 2019- after the loss to the jets: “I still think we can have a great year and feel good about it and feel great about Jason Garrett and his staff and feel like we’ll go to work here this week and move forward.”

  • Nov, 2019 after embarrassing Thanksgiving Day loss to Bills: “We’ll move forward. We’ve all had adversity before and we’ll see how this group responds. We have a large amount of confidence that they’re gonna respond in a very good way, that we’ll go out and win this East and get in the tournament.”

  • June, 2020- “No one wants to sign Dak Prescott more than we do.”
I’m not being critical of Stephen for being all over the map in his comments or about the Dak contract. I just wish both the Jones boys would shut their mouths for a while. Other than the Bungles, there isn’t another NFL front office executive with this much responsibility to win, and this poor a playoff record to show for it, that still has their job.

So I wish Stephen and Jerry both would just be quiet. What they say rarely means that much regarding winning football games anyway.

They own the most valuable team in sports. They can say what they want just like so many of the fraud players running their idiotic mouths daily. Jones are no idiots.

Good point and with no accountability at the GM position.....how does it get measured anyway...."you have 5 years to win.....then i'm gonna give you another 5 years to win...well here is another....

Thats the hardest part for me is they aren't idiots they just refuse to do what they need to do because of ego...hire a damn GM and hold him accountable....

Doesn’t that kind of make you an idiot if you refuse to do what they need to do to win? Especially for one quarter of a century.

Disagree that it has anything to do w/ wanting to win. We lost primarily because our D made Allen look like a top 5 QB.

You're forgetting that BUFF had the 3rd ranked D in the NFL last season, 2nd in points. And that was w/ a crappy O, which makes that ranking even more of an accomplishment.

True, but some of that ranking may be due to playing the jets and Miami 4 times as well as playing the weak NFC East.....kind of like our defense being ranked #9 because of the same reasons

If either us or buffalo played in the NFC west our rankings may look quite different

I still believe that Josh took the team on his back and converted some very big plays unlike our guy. Just a difference of opinion on that........respectfully, as always

Since I don't watch the Bills, yeah, that could easily be the truth. However, I'd have to point to his team being 23rd in points score.

Always appreciate good palaver w/o the 3rd grade insults!!!!!
