Yeah. I was hoping that we'd wait until we see if Zeurlein is back to his old self. If he is, he's the better overall kicker. I know we had to cut some players to get down to 80, but I wanted to wait on this one.

Yeah, I thought we get some competition in TC. However, with basically 2 weeks of actual on the field practices. Since it starts August 17th. They need that time to work on the timing. Hard to split snaps and no PS games to evaluate as well. This is also why Fotunato was waived. LP as the LS over him.

Which also Chris Jones as the holder, will be our P again as well.

Vets over rookies or inexperienced players will be going on in all TC's.
Expected starters and depth players need the reps. Especially for teams with new coaching staffs.

Mistake.

Forbath has been 86.8% in his career. 151 attempts and made 131.

Zuerlein has been 82% in his career 245 attempts and made 201.

ST coach wants his guy I guess.

What plays in favor of Zeurlein, other than the stronger leg, is before last year, he had three straight making 86 percent or above. Forbath has been more up and down. If last year was a fluke (which Fassel obviously believes it was) because of injury, then Zeurlein can get back to the steady kicker he had become. Based on his career, Forbath wasn't likely to turn around and continue to be perfect for us. When he's on, he's very good, but he's inconsistent.

Now, because we don't know if Greg is back to being the kicker he was from 2016-2018, I would have kept Forbath until I was at least sure of Zeurlein.

Posted this in another thread, but thought I would put it here too since for some reason, I wasn't allowed to post it as a separate thread:

Not sure why a thread I just made about other players who have been cut by Dallas was removed, but was reading an Associated Press story that included the fact that Savion Smith has been placed on reserve COVID and Joe Fortunato and Azur Kamara have been cut.

I have not seen this information posted elsewhere.

That makes our roster moves: Jon'Vea Johnson (reserve/COVID), Maurice Canady (opt out), Stephen Guidry (opt out), Jordan Chunn (waived injured), Garrett Marino (waived ill), Kai Forbath, Savion Smith (reserve/COVID), Joe Fortunato and Azur Kamara. That's nine. Not sure if we have one more spot or we were holding one for Randy Gregory or hadn't filled Travis Frederick's spot.

We also have Tyrone Crawford and Dontari Poe starting out on PUP.

Kai Forbath Released; Rookie LB Waived/Injured

Teams must trim their roster from 90 to 80 players by Aug. 16, however – a new provision in the agreement between the NFL and NFLPA as the league makes plans for training camp and the season amid the nation's COVID-19 crisis. Padded practices are scheduled to begin Aug. 17.

******************

Saturday's roster moves put the Cowboys at the 80-player limit, though Johnson and Smith will be eligible to be activated when they complete the league's COVID-19 return protocol.

******************

The Cowboys placed defensive linemen Tyrone Crawford (hip) and Dontari Poe (quad) on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list earlier this week, but both players still count toward the active camp roster. They're eligible to be activated from PUP as soon as they are cleared for practice.

Obviously with the need to get down to 80 players this early, the team doesn't have the luxury to keep 2 kickers at this point. Decisions have to be made and evaluations at other positions are in progress.

...just wow! At least let the guy compete for the job. Typical stupid Dallas move. Watch next year, game on the line with 10 seconds left, Forbath wins it for the Bears in Wildcard shootout.

2018 87.1%

2019 72.73% (quad injury)

Agreed. He was pretty mediocre last year. Supposedly injured, but still.

umm so was baily all very similar circumstances yet he recovered and fan base he whined like babies we would have kept him hid him and brought him back..well Zurleins back..

i still would have like ad a competition in early camp but hey ill trust fossil he knows the kicker well and if hes been watching him kick, im sure thats a reason we helped Kai be able to get a better job released early..
Bailey took a couple of years to regain his form.

yes it is why i supported him being cut but the MASSES HERE SAID, OF COURSE, THE FO WAS STUPID TO LET HIM GO.. He did come back and play well and maybe Z has healed 100% already, im sure Fossil knows better he obviously has close relationship with the guy as we did Baily.. you cant stash Kickers on IR and not have room for other players that need IR..

Id lie to keep both if possible and this surprises me but a the same time what doesnt surprise me is no OTAS, no MCs, No PS Game= no true way to have a competition without live environments with true pressure.. so if Zurlein is close enough, Fossil was going to keep the guy, thats not a surprise..

When you go out and sign a top free agent that ends the competition

A guy who made barely over 70% of his kicks last year is a top free agent? He has had a steady decline the last 2 years. In fact, he has been pretty erratic his entire career. Go look at his percentage year by year. It is not consistent. I don't get this signing at all. We just cut a guy who was wildly inconsistent during the season last year.

I think this was a ST coach preference.. I thought Forbath did well for us last year. He was 10 for 10.

He was a top free agent at his position
He’s not a QB or pass rusher but at his position he was certainly a top free agent
Whether you like the signing or not doesn’t matter once he’s signed
Once you sign him you aren’t cutting him

I agree. Well lets hope the Leg is back to form if not they keep Forbath on speed dial.
