I believe you're perceiving it the wrong way.
You responded to my comment, so maybe you are perceiving my comment the wrong way. My point was that a contract signed a few years ago may have been top tier at that time, but a couple of years later might not be sufficient to sign the same QB if he were negotiating at that time, therefore the older contract cannot be used as a standard for what is top tier in later years.

Now that I agree w/.

However, I would not take the "top tier" designation off of a contract just because others signed for more a couple years later.

I'm just talking about people using an older contract as a measuring stick for what is considered top tier in a different market a few years later. I think we both agree that isn't the right standard to use.

Hard to tell now that mahomes got paid. Do you think his contract raised the bar. Not a lot of QBs right now have earned 45 a year. Even though I don’t think even mahomes will get that. Once his contract gets to where he is supposed to be paid that much they will restructure for a while. Or it will be a few seasons down the road before he gets 45.

I think it does raise the bar, both because it is just a higher dollar contract to begin with, and because we can't judge his contract by the possibility of a restructure later and ignore that others could do the same. Of course, his restructure will be a different animal just because the original structure is a different animal. Ultimately though, all a restructure does is spread out the contract hit over a longer time, but the dollars paid for the length of commitment is still the same.

I don't think so. Mahomes' contract is how the contracts should be written, w/ wiggle room to keep the talent pool full.

It won't raise the bar, as the first 4 years are less than what others got. However, it might reset the bar w/ more players realizing that if they take too large a chunk, they'll be in the Russell Wilson category where their contract keeps the org from putting talent around you.

I think it might reset the bar, not raise it. Teams need the longer contracts to fill the talent pool. Those restructures are tantamount to super bowl dreams.

You pay a tier 2 quarterback like a tier 2 quarterback. Intentionally or not, the Cowboys did the right thing here.

They offered him more than Russell Wilson. He's not remotely close to Russell Wilson. Thankfully, France played hardball and lost.

Now, Dak has to perform well with a legitimate option on the bench this time and a new coach who isn't beholden to him. Now, we find out what Dak is or is not.

This coming offseason, it will either be easy to unload the bank account for Dak, or wish him well in his future endeavors.
