Why shouldn't every player have the right to make their own choices, and what make a fan more qualified to make those choices than the player themselves?

Ultimately, so what if he wasn't as effective as he was in the better part of his career? He wanted to play, and he played hard and had good intentions, so what is there to feel animosity about? The coaches are the ones that had the decision to play him or scale him back more.
He's got the right to do whatever he wants, assuming someone will hire him. That's not the point that I made.
The point is that an old Jason Witten waddling 5 yards downfield to waddle around and catch a pass--if he holds on to it--tarnishes the reputation and the memory of the special player that he was.
Like the man said, you got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, and know when to walk away.

At least he'll get to experience a more functional owner his final year than what he had here.

Even if it does tarnish the reputation, which I don't understand anyway, so what? It's his choice if he wants to play - like you said as long as a team wants him.

Besides, why should he spend even an iota of his time worrying if some unknown people who should have no impact on his life or happiness forget what he was or thinks less of him because, like all of us, his body can't perform at 38 the way it did at 25? His focus is, and should be, on his own happiness. I doubt anyone that watched him in his prime will forget anyway, and neither will HOF voters.

yup Montanan played for the chiefs, Emmitt for the cardinals, Farve for the vikings, Manning to Denver, Ware to denver, and many more notable hof stars that moved around at least JW went to the afc and not in our division..he could have ended up with Garett in NY, now that would have been hard to swallow.

JW wants a ring the DC failed him and hes holding out his last hope..

Damn that's cold. He's a legend.

Yeah, hard to understand hate for Witten... Not his fault people kept him on the field past his prime. They played him, not like he had the power to force them to.

Witten also was a safety valve, and was still good at that. Just YAC is horrible... But YAC wasn't so much a thing with TEs until we started seeing these hybrid TE/WR types
all over the place.

I’m not as sold as some on MM. I think most coaches would succeed offensively with this roster, there’s zero excuses even for the first year, but I need to see what he can do without one of the best QB’s kn the game. There have been several games I’ve seen him coach when I wasn’t overly impressed, including the playoff game in 2016 when he almost let us come back and win because he got to conservative in the 2nd half. If Rodgers wasn’t his QB and calling his own plays he would have most likely lost that game.

Our defense is also extremely over rated IMO. We lost one of the best corner backs in the league which fans seem to minimize because he didn’t get INT’s, he only took out half the field and the other teams best receiver. We lost our sack leader which fans minimize because he wasn’t good against the run. Some fans assume LVE will return to his rookie form when he was playing horribly before his injury last year and is now potentially one hit away from retirement. Jaylon is extremely over rated and Dlaw didn’t do jack last year. We got two new guys for the interior but this is a passing league and we still have several other areas of concern.

Once again, we lead the league as next years paper champions.

See the types of well thought out posts you can produce when you're not CONSUMED! with Zeke? Lol.

Yeah I blame Garret before I blame Witten. He doesn't deserve the hate. This fanbase has blurred who to root for and who not to. IMO, Dez and Witten both get treated much harsher than they should. Well, at least on this site.

I can understand some of the hate. For all the talk about him being a team player, he screwed the team with his first exit. They find out about his exit to the booth through the rumor mill on draft day and allow the Eagles to leapfrog us to take a dang good TE we would have been in the market for? Plus that guy was named Dallas. You think that wouldn't have been a perfect fit for Jerry's marketing schemes? Jerry would have given him 88 even if Dez was still on the team. Sorry but that whole episode was just piss poor.

I wish him the best but the way he's ending his career is odd to say the least.

He sat with the coaches at lunch (figuratively).

That's not who I wanted in the locker room. Parcells Witten sure, not Garrett Witten..he became everything we didn't like about the culture in the locker room if anything.
Jason Garrett for sure. Jason Witten can’t put in that conversation
