His career as a whole is fine. But in reality, and the media can portray it differently, looking at his actions there wasn’t a more selfish player on this team than Jason Witten and shame on Jason Garrett for allowing it.

Witten straight up quit on his team when a better opportunity to came along. He tried that opportunity, was TERRIBLE at it, and then was allowed to come back by Jason Garrett and he was gifted a starting job. Oh, and also gifted a leadership position. I’m sure players on the team loved hearing Witten talk about the importance of being a team and sacrificing for one another when the moment a better opportunity came for him he was out.

Nice guy- but his actions show that he was very selfish at the end of his career. His return also stunted the growth of other players, because Jason Garrett is spineless and wouldn’t tell him to get off the field.
Thank you for acknowledging this. It's refreshing to read.

yup Montanan played for the chiefs, Emmitt for the cardinals, Farve for the vikings, Manning to Denver, Ware to denver, and many more notable hof stars that moved around at least JW went to the afc and not in our division..he could have ended up with Garett in NY, now that would have been hard to swallow.

JW wants a ring the DC failed him and hes holding out his last hope..
I doubt he has much chance of getting it with the Raiders, but good for him if he wants to try.

I can understand some of the hate. For all the talk about him being a team player, he screwed the team with his first exit. They find out about his exit to the booth through the rumor mill on draft day and allow the Eagles to leapfrog us to take a dang good TE we would have been in the market for? Plus that guy was named Dallas. You think that wouldn't have been a perfect fit for Jerry's marketing schemes? Jerry would have given him 88 even if Dez was still on the team. Sorry but that whole episode was just piss poor.
The thing we don't know is when Witten got the offer. If he truly didn't get the broadcast offer until just at that time, I have no problem with the timing of his exit. Yes, it made things a little harder to adjust draft strategy, but that's life. If, however, he knew some time in advance, that's a different story.

Still, it's not as if the team didn't have it's draft board set where they couldn't have adjusted, and there is no certainty even if the Cowboys knew about Witten in advance that they would have moved up to get Goedert rather than waiting and finding the Eagles moved up. Hell, they might have stuck with Williams anyway.

Yeah, who knows about the timing. I'm just thinking that with him involved in the process, he could have made mention to the MNF folks to keep things under wraps until after the draft or even let the Cowboys know that his retirement might be contingent on that gig. With no news breaking, maybe the Eagles don't even feel the need to get Goedert. Ertz is plenty great on his own so not sure Goedert was a need until TE was a need for us.

Wit gave his all with Dallas. I'm glad he's not on the team, but I have no ill will toward the dude (as a football player, and obviously not as a person).

His time had just run out here. I hope he does well in Oakland!

True - seems even if the timing were such that Witten wasn't able to give the Cowboys much advance notice they could have kept it on the QT so the Eagles wouldn't know the situation going into the draft. On the other hand, maybe the Cowboys weren't planning to take Goerdart anyway and hoped the Eagles would feel pressure to make an unnecessary trade to get Goedart. Who knows - would love to know the details.

I'm thinking Jason Witten is the same TE that performed devotedly for us for 16 years!

If he's unworthy of continuing his career, the truth will likely be proven to everyone.

He's not one to garnish his receptions with loads of YACs but is a reliable TE, anyway.

Amazing that potentially our only Hall of Famer this era would be bashed by Cowboy fans. Internet fans aren’t like any Ive ever known personally. It’s things like this which make me really question why I spend any time here at all.

He was a shining star...one of the best. A total class act that always repped the organization and his team well. Never had to worry about Witt making the police scanner or news headlines like so many other high profile players. Always had the heart...unlike so many others.
Personally, I can never diss a vatto like that.
Major props and respect to the man.
