Say anything negative about a cowboy, even if it's true, and you are all of a sudden trash.

Hooper is becoming one of the top TE's, just because Witten is old, and has already established himself doesn't make Hooper any less.

Witten always put himself before the team, because if he really cared, he would help the younger, and he would have taken a backseat 2-3 years ago. Instead he would rather keep trying to live a dream and hurt us at the TE position.

This would bother me about Witten if there weren't literally hours upon hours of tape a teammate could review to see how a limited athlete like Witten became an all-time great.

Also, I find it hard to believe a teammate asking for tips would not get at least some kind of insight from Jason.

This is pro football. Work. Work. Work.

Find a way to get better and be great, or be satisfied to reach Austin Hooper heights- a fine player for sure, but not a HOF-er.

Martellus said he tried to ask Witten a question about a route and Witten told him to figure it out. Just find it weird that guys like Fasano, Bennett and Escobar who were all pretty high picks could never coexist with Witten.

Martellus should have asked his coach. That guy was a clown, I wouldn't want to talk to him either.

I’m confused is this a Jason siren bashing thread or a let’s sign hooper thread?

Already the 2nd post about how Witt is a HOF'er, but not addressing that he apparently never helped the guys behind him.
I mean we often have romantic notions of people we have seen succeed but it's pretty obvious Witt was a "these are my reps" kind of dude and expected someone to topple the thrown not have a torch passed.
To me that's perfectly fine and not really a knock.
I'd protect my 5m a year job too.

Austin Hooper: I’m not like Jason Witten, where it’s me vs. other TEs
Posted by Charean Williams on August 5, 2020, 7:11 PM EDT

Hooper, 25, played four seasons in Atlanta, making him the veteran of the group. He vows to mentor the other tight ends, calling out Raiders tight end Jason Witten in the process.

It is unclear whether Hooper knows Witten or why he said what he said about the former Cowboys tight end. It may go back a few years to perception created by Martellus Bennett, who, after four years playing behind Witten in Dallas, told ESPN, “I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him.”
“My style, I’ve never really been a rah-rah guy at all,’’ Hooper said, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “I just kind of like to lead by example, and if people have questions, I will answer them. I am an open book. I don’t try to hoard information. I don’t like doing the whole Jason Witten deal where it is me versus everyone else in the tight end room. I think it is more like we are all in this together. David, Harrison, Stephen [Carlson], Pharaoh [Brown], Nate [Wieting], we are all in this together.
Yeah Hoop, you're not. Like 10,000+ yards not. At this point, 4 years into your career Witten had three seasons already that were better than your best year. And Atlanta thought so much of you, they said thanks for the memories.

He is obviously right, and as others said Dalton Schwartz and him probably text.

Witten was bad for this team the last few years. It was obvious that he was playing based on seniority, and not talent. And it was obvious that he would pout about being taken out of games. So glad this guy is no longer then”leader” of our team when he left the team at the first good opportunity.

Jason Witten being gifted everything from this team the last few years and playing based in seniority rather than ability encapsulates much of what was wrong with the Jason Garrett era.
The media always propped this guy up while others were blamed for being locker room cancers. I guess he deserves some of the blame that others received.

The media creates "hero narratives" for those they want you to love because people want to believe in this to feel good. They also want you to hate people and things because people need to get negative things out. Ping ponging emotions is good for clicks and ratings.

Witten's longevity speaks volumes. Marty B is 5 years younger and already a few years removed from being in the league. Did he ever reach out to Witten? Facts are, Witten got open like a hall of famer, was a better blocker, and a better all around player. Witten had 2 940+ yard seasons and 2 1,000+ yard seasons while Bennett was on the team. Bennett was bitter because he just wasn't as good of a player. Bennett had a couple of years of success after leaving the team but still never put up Witten's best numbers.

I wonder if Witten got some of that from Parcells. I remember Bill talking about vets who wouldn't let young guys take practice reps from them.

But he meant it in a competitive, don't-get-complacent kind of way. I doubt Witten ever held anyone back. If he did, that's on the coaches. A Parcells wouldn't hang on to a guy too long like a Jason Garrett who is looking for brownie points from a future HOFer.

I'm a huge Witten fan, and don't understand most of the negativity a lot of posters show, but in fairness, he was known to not offer much help to the TE's that served as his backups. I've seen quotes from him that in his mind he was competing with them for the starting role.

That said, I'm not sure that's as terrible as some might think - all of us who played sports had to compete for our starting roles and should be able to relate, and maybe it helped Witten be more competitive and effective to never let himself think he was a shoo in as the starter, even though for many years he was.
