Also, FYI, even though I work in a very different environment Than professional sports I have always seen it as my role to help my coworkers develop and grow in order to reach their potential. I have especially been careful to help my junior colleagues reach their maximum potential because what helps them helps my work team. That’s why Many years ago they chose me as their department leader. It should never just be about yourself on the job it should be about helping those around you so that the team performs to its potential. Sadly that seems to be a value which has been lacking on the Dallas Cowboys for many many years
That is admirable but I do not see the connection to what these players do within a small window of time. Witten's has been longer than most because of his regimen to stay in shape and we do not know just what his involvement has been with other younger players.

The root of this problem is not Witten, it is the culture established on the team by management. Management that wouldn't allow the HC to increase fines for players selfish enough to show up late for meetings.

Hagman, I can tell you from being in business for 50 years that your kind of selflessness is the exception, not the rule. And in my experience, employees that did show that interest in the younger ones were not as selfless as you, they wanted to be seen as management material.

I wonder if Martellus would've got that 1st down in Seattle that Lofa Tatupu stood Witten up and left him 1 yard short of the 1st down.
We all know what happened on the next play.

Witten May be a HOF, but he was mediocre the last few years and is mediocre now and his game takes up reps from people that have talent. He has zero speed.

The only reason he came back is because he was about to load his job in broadcasting and he was a Garrett guy. There were even rumors Garrett was trying to bring him back the season before. The fact he returned seems to be proof against the claim of Jerry that it wasn’t true.

And this notion about Witten goes back, meaning where there is smoke, there is probably fire.

My understanding of the Martellus Bennett situation was not that Witten was ever a poor mentor to him but that the coaching-staff perpetually pushed Witten into Bennett's face, always saying things like: "Look at Witten. Follow Witten. Be Witten. Do exactly what Witten does." --and through this he developed, as he described, a hatred for Witten. But not because Witten was a poor teammate. It's that he cast a pretty big shadow, which some found it difficult to stand in...

Comments aside, why are people in this thread pretending they don’t know who Hooper is or that they don’t think he’s any good? He’s a legitimately good TE.

Or is everyone trying to make excuses for these “LOL WHO IS HOOPER POOPER LOLOL” jokes I keep seeing?

Man, it's crazy how so many people know exactly what's going on in a locker room they've never even been in.
Even the Hooper is only going by what was said by players who couldn't win the starting job.

Austin Hooper: I’m not like Jason Witten, where it’s me vs. other TEs

Hooper, 25, played four seasons in Atlanta, making him the veteran of the group. He vows to mentor the other tight ends, calling out Raiders tight end Jason Witten in the process.

It is unclear whether Hooper knows Witten or why he said what he said about the former Cowboys tight end. It may go back a few years to perception created by Martellus Bennett, who, after four years playing behind Witten in Dallas, told ESPN, “I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him.”
“My style, I’ve never really been a rah-rah guy at all,’’ Hooper said, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “I just kind of like to lead by example, and if people have questions, I will answer them. I am an open book. I don’t try to hoard information. I don’t like doing the whole Jason Witten deal where it is me versus everyone else in the tight end room. I think it is more like we are all in this together. David, Harrison, Stephen [Carlson], Pharaoh [Brown], Nate [Wieting], we are all in this together.
**** Austin. Witten is a ure HOFer...you are not even a foot note in the NFL.....earn your stripes first.

and Farve and rogers not helping or liking the next guy behind him, its the backups job to TAKE the job from the starter and not suckle the tite of the starter.. some like helping ie teaching nd others want to concentrate on their own game..

theres no right way, hes not coach or mentor..lots of layers are like this, oly ones exposed are the ones that have sore losers behind them or never made it in te nfl , really not one ..MB did a pretty good job but where is he now..he will be forgotten while Jwitt will have gold jacket.. not many liked TO but To does not need to apologize, he accomplished most f his goals as did Jwitt..

Guys who give a hand up to other players are more useful to the team. Maybe if Witten had been one of those guys, he'd still be on the team. Also, teaching others is one of the best ways to hone your own understanding.

Witten is similar to Garrett, both protecting their own positions to the cost of the rest of the team, instead of lifting up people below them. Marinelli and Linehan were pure Garrett hires, guys who failed as HCs, and so were no threat to replace him.

Anyone in an organization can play the me-first game. An organization of me-firsters won't rise above mediocrity.

I seem to recall stories about TO spending extra time after practice with down roster WRs. Garrett was disgruntled that TO showed too much leadership contradicting his stupidity, not too little. I haven't heard this confirmed, but I expect that the push for Roy Williams was spearheaded by Garrett to get rid of TO.

But isn't it you vs the other players at your position? The best players in any sport are very competitive.
