The wifey n I raise dachshunds. The scams right now are running rampant. And I mean, it's bad. People putting down deposits and paying for puppies, only to find out there is no puppy. At least one used a puppy pic we had on our site several years ago.

One lady paid for the puppy in full, and even had a flight number and such for the airlines. She went and waited at the airport, no puppy. Sad.

Just be warned.

Just over the last 2-3 months, my wifey's heard from prolly 20-30 people who have been scammed in this way.

I don't know how to get around it. The demand for puppies is huge right now, we can't raise enough. Wifey has a stack of papers for a waiting list, must be 50 or more people on it. I would say to go see the puppy in person if possible, I guess.

How does this scam normally work? I've never been in the puppy business but I guess it's customary to pay for the puppy before you even meet the owners? I'd figure most people would meet up with the owner. Check the puppy out and then exchange money

A friend of mine just got a red lab puppy shipped from Oklahoma to Vermont. Contact was via email. The breeder has a very active FB page and the reviews and whatnot all checked out but I still thought she was nuts. With one minor hiccup with flights everything ended well and little Banjo is in his new home kicking *** and taking names. I guess 'mailorder' pups are pretty common for both purebreds and rescues.

She thinks I am nuts for driving 250 miles one way on three occasions to get my GSD.

Forgive me as I'm not too bright. What is GSD?

I know that's the only way I'd do it. A deposit on a dog? No.

It takes a deposit to hold a puppy. Right now, due to Covid, the demand is much higher than the supply. And it's open to the first deposit. I think the wifey's deposit is $300.

The customers are welcome to come visit/see their puppy pretty much any time. The reason people pay deposits over the phone is to guarantee they will get the puppy.

So, since the demand is high right now, people are desperate to find a puppy. They find the ad(Don't know where or how), pick their puppy, then pay the deposit, often via paypal.

I would imagine one could tell a scammer via a phone convo? I mean, do these people sound like the idiots trying to get me to up my car warranty?

Maybe I can get some more info.
