a leader doesnt have to be a teacher to his underlings Jwitt was a model citizen off the field, community efforts from he and his wife, and his on field play and work ethic spoke for itself.. lets not forget he was leader and one of the best players we had in the SB drought era and he never missed games, got in trouble, and always gave max effort..
You've described a model citizen and employee. But not, imo, a leader of a football team.

From the article in the other Witten thread:

He isn’t going to be the No. 1 target at tight end for the first time in his career. He was brought in to be more of a leader and mentor for the young guys. Considering his age, it should be a perfect role for him.

Witten probably was a great teammate to everyone other than the other TE's lol. Witten didn't want to train his replacement.

Most people are followers, The real trick is picking the right leader to follow.
Owens was a leader, he effectively got most of the WR's on his side shortly after joining every team.

These players are only on a team when at practice and in games, other than that, they're individuals and have to look out for themselves. Players, people, with that competitive fire don't limit that to a team. Any good player competes with others that would take that job.

Bob Lilly used to take shots in his back for the final practice before a game because he feared losing his job because he had a HC that built that fear in him. Think Jimmy didn't pit players against each other to get that edge? Parcells? Bud Grant and Chuck Noll were known for pushing their stars.

Think Amari Cooper doesn't hear footsteps from the Cowboys first pick? They might be friendly but Cooper is not helping him take his job. Witten saw them spend a higher draft pick on Bennett, he's supposed to feel good about that? This is a guy so fearful of losing his job he'll play with a broken jaw or no helmet.

Nobody can criticize the all American Witten lol. Shannon Sharpe said he got Todd heap ready and ravens let him go a year later. A real hall of famer

Austin Hooper: I’m not like Jason Witten, where it’s me vs. other TEs
Posted by Charean Williams on August 5, 2020, 7:11 PM EDT

Hooper, 25, played four seasons in Atlanta, making him the veteran of the group. He vows to mentor the other tight ends, calling out Raiders tight end Jason Witten in the process.

It is unclear whether Hooper knows Witten or why he said what he said about the former Cowboys tight end. It may go back a few years to perception created by Martellus Bennett, who, after four years playing behind Witten in Dallas, told ESPN, “I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him.”
“My style, I’ve never really been a rah-rah guy at all,’’ Hooper said, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “I just kind of like to lead by example, and if people have questions, I will answer them. I am an open book. I don’t try to hoard information. I don’t like doing the whole Jason Witten deal where it is me versus everyone else in the tight end room. I think it is more like we are all in this together. David, Harrison, Stephen [Carlson], Pharaoh [Brown], Nate [Wieting], we are all in this together.
If the truth hurts, you'll be in pain. If the truth drives you crazy, you'll be insane.

I used to mention Witten’s selfishness going back to 2008 how he’s able to hide behind his “good soldier boy” image in the process.

None of this surprises me. Witten demanded the ball just as much as most “divas”. He just went about it the “right” way

Yes, many Pro Athletes are *** hats personally. Even many that have reputations as good guys. Payton Manning is known to be a an *** to fans and beat reporters.

If there were any negatives that affected the team due to Witten's personality, it was all Garrett's fault (Witten should not have played 99% of snaps in 2017 or 75% in 2019).

Belichick didn't let Tom Brady or anyone else run the team.

Jimmy didn't let Mike Irvin or Haley or Jerry run the team.

Saint Jason of Knoxville. What a guy.

Can't argue that he left the team in a lurch and people don't want to talk about how it hamstrung the entire draft process and quite possibly the entire offense that year. All because he wanted to be an announcer and flash his fancy toupees.

He's still one of my favorite players in recent years and a legitimate star in a decade of mediocrity.
I can't say he was a diamond amongst trash.

You would have to go back almost 10 years alone to find him being dominant, with 2012 being his peak. Since then, he has been little more than a savvy route runner who all too often could not make plays beyond the catch point.

Talent and coaching had nothing to do with it? Sharpe should be a HC somewhere! Lol
He said he gave byron chamberlain help too. Former pro bowler. Hmmm sharpe mentored two pro bowl tight ends on two different teams. Witten? Crickets. But this is the same site that actually thinks Witten was better than Shannon sooooooooooo. Yeah

I like Witten more for three reasons. First he's a traditional TE and not a big wide receiver, I like that style of play. Second, I actually watched him play every one of his games and only watched Sharpe when he played the Cowboys. Third, I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan and don't really care to hear people diss some our legendary players. That simple, for me.
