The new “blah, blah, blah” voice of this team

Serious question to a fan I respect- what evidence in terms of winning do we have that should make us feel better this year than other years with the Jones boys? We undoubtedly have a better head coach now, but JJ has already made two HOF coaches uncomfortable enough to leave.

Other than just raw hope, why should we as fans have any confidence in the Jones boys’ ability to build a team that wins in the playoffs? Fans in San Fran have seen their team go from bad to winning the NFC- twice in the last 10 years. Even the hated e-girls have won two NFC championships and a SB under two different HCs and GMs in the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, we still have the guys who take vacations when free agency opens, and are probably as we speak, negotiating the next big concert or tractor pull in their beloved “Stayjum”.

I want to have hope. But hope is not a strategy for winning as the old saying goes.

Love your topics and most all posts for that matter. Your first 2 paragraphs summarize my macro level opinion on the present state of the franchise. I guess the current situation can be dressed up with varying degrees of assorted positive posts by you to not appear too gloom and doomish. But if you just stuck to how you laid this description all out in these first 2 paragraphs there wouldn't be much more to post about for you, lol.

As for me personally, I don't share the positive group think mentality towards specific personnel and this coaching staff that most of the rest here do.

One thing I do definitely agree on though, hope is not a strategy. Unfortunately, after all these many years and as you pointed out, with still no change at the top, hope is all that's left at this point.

Ok...but what good is it to “load up this team with players” if they don’t win anything in the playoffs? As a fan I’m not impressed with how much Jerry is worth financially. Show me some playoff wins.

Wait a min, did you not see Gene's latestvartwork in the stajum? Its stunning and will have you changing your tune.

What you have to understand is the team is being run and is performing exactly according to plan. Stephen and Jerruh could not be happier. Everyone is talking about all our big stars. We are the cock of the walk baby. If your goal is to win championships you need to look elswhere.

It's tylically called "fool's gold".

25 years tend to create doubt among fans. Very few people under 30 even remember the last Dallas div playoff win. Hope does not spring eternal w the fuhrer and son. Rah, rah, same bs, new hc to blame for failure, and the next chapter of underachieving. We need more coaches that are former players w zero coaching experience that JJ can give an 8 yr window to learn on the job.

Dak has had issues against teams with a winning record. Look at 2017, 2018 and 2019 he doesn't have that "IT" factor. He doesn't have the ability to raise his game to the next level. The ONLY reason he threw for 4900 - plus yards is because teams GAVE HIM those yards. Teams get a lead, load the box and play off receivers & TEs basically saying....DAK BEAT UP WITH YOUR ARM and he can't. I stand firm that JJ & Co have been doing a pretty dam good job loading this team up with players.
Funny how many posters don't want to include Dak's rookie season when discussing numbers.....like it never happened.

It did happen and it is just as relevent.

All teams struggle against teams with wimning records...including most teams with winning records.

Over the pasr 4 seasons the Cowboys won 43% of their games against teams with wimning records.

This ranks the Cowboys 9th among the 32 teams in this category.

Over the past 4 seasons the Cowboys record is also Dak's record, he started every game.

So, in conclusion, Dak performs better among winning teams than do the quarterback of 22 out of 32 NFL teams.

Now, since the concensus is that we have much better coachimg, shouldn't we expect Dak to ne even better? I mean, if Garrett was capable of getting that kind of production out of Dak, how much better will he become with McCarthy?

I don't have any misgivings about hope being a self-inflicted disease as some of us might have us think. if it were, I wouldn't bother to tune in to Cowboys' games, nor frequent this website on a regular basis. What I'm seeing as harmful is simply clinging to false hopes and expectations. That's a path for putting any fan in a depressed state of mind every time.

Rather, choose to pin realistic hopes on those like McCarthy and his staff to help improve this team. Right now, I tend to avoid pinning my hopes upon winning a Super Bowl. Why? Because I've realistically seen too many other teams performing better than we have for the past 25 years or so. Now, that certainly doesn't mean we should abandon hopes for this team's improvement, though. If a championship comes to be, whether it happens to be one of the level of a divisional sort comes about, so much the better. I'll just be content to keep it real.

There's no harm in being contenting oneself with being entertained, and winning one game at a time, rather than harboring false dreams of Super Bowl wins at this juncture. Doing so is the quickest way to invite bitter disappointment in the near future. I prefer to content myself with enjoying one game at a time and hoping to be entertained and perhaps, even winning some in the process. No "fools gold" there, that I can see. ;)

Hope springs eternal that the new boss won't be like the old boss with absolutely no evidence of that.

As long as winning without really winning on the field remains the norm, why change? It is a business first and foremost and a successful one so there's no need to really change.

Why do people in business make changes? Glad you asked. There are two prime motivations, the desire to gain or avoid pain and research tells us avoiding pain is the stronger motivator, especially if they're already in pain. Why do we think Booger has never really changed? Where's the pain? The only real pain he's had was being replaced for a short period of time as the face of the Cowboys. And who's face is the only one he's let share that now?

This never changes until someone is in charge that has to succeed, their job is dependent on the success on the field. I really don't think some consider just how important that stadium was to this business, it made them bulletproof. Think about it, the #1 attraction in all of pro sports and the highest valued one has done nothing, NOTHING, in 25 years and all that time it's just kept increasing in profit and value. You will not find anything in the business or sports world to match that.

The other fallacy is that the longer someone does something, the better they become at it. I can show you so many examples of this being not even remotely true and The Peter Principle wasn't fiction. Because you can buy something or be raised by someone who can doesn't assure them that they can run it. But they do run it, only it's not successful like most want here, where it really counts. That financial and exposure success is the enemy to success on the field.

Show me the reason for change and I will begin to buy into this belief the son will make it better. Where has he shown he's not at the same level of incompetency as his father? The Manziel pick? That's it?

There is a major difference between most of the posters here and myself in our belief about this team. I do not expect it to get much better but I have accepted what is and what will be and decided to stay on as a fan because of history and laundry. But I refuse to believe this is going to get better because of the the son because like the song says that I referenced in my first sentence, I won't get fooled again.
Well done!

This notion by some fans Cheapskate Son has taken over football operations is simply false hope.

Fans confuse a stronger presence in Salary Cap Mgmt and a new HC as there’s been some change in power . All without any official statement by Daddy naming his son GM or new role in duties to provide his son any recognition

Fans apparently have misinterpreted a stronger voice and potential influence as some sort of change in power and leadership. They must also believe that Daddy is so dastardly to also take credit for any success that comes with it.

Misplaced optimism has been possibly our biggest detriment. See, that's OK for a fan to have that, but not a GM. A GM absolutely must have the ability/people who have the ability to see each and every player for what they actually are, including weaknesses and strengths and a myriad of other facets. Jerry lacks this ability, and severely. It's like Jerry is the optimistic version of Pappydog. And apparently he doesn't listen to those who may have it.

Not me. I'm simply hoping and praying that Jerry got so smushed w/ failure that he gave MM enough leash to do this right. And there are already signs that he has. And on the flipside, MM must be able to just stay out of the spotlight and do his job. And it appears he's the type to do that.

So, it's not just hope, my dear, it's looking at some facts and logic that appear to add up to Jerry finally realizing he's a football dolt and that he needed a guy in charge who wasn't. That's what it looks like. To continue to think that Jerry hasn't changed is doing a ton of avoidance and ignoring of facts and logic and such. Or maybe one might just be lazy and it's much easier to believe nothing has changed.

I saw the look in Jerry's face at the end of the season. I've never seen that look before. Failure was etched in every line. Deeply etched. Failure that points to Jerry giving up and hiring legit NFL staffers.

What actually befuddles me is how most don't see that.

Jerry has had that look many times. As soon as they win a few games he is on the radio talking about super bowls and comparing every single thing that happens to 1992.

If they would just shut up and not talk all year the perception would change immediately. The last time they really needed change they did this. Parcells came in and the whole damn season when Jerry would do an interview with norm he basically talked like a robot only repeating things that parcells said. IT was amazing to listen to in 2003. It was short lived.

imo, that is all they have to do is stop talking so much and people would slowly not talk about them.

This isn’t about hiring a legit coaching staff which no one is disputing. It’s about turning the reins over to his son.

And that failed look on Jerry’s face was for having to part with Jason and everything that represented.

We’ve seen Jerry forced to hire a proven staff before and what was sounder drafts , etc to steer the ship in a better direction only to be foiled by his meddling and distractions.

My argument is based on that Jerry hasn’t turned over final football decisions to his son. Will McCarthy be a bigger influence? Time will tell but he better have success sooner rather than later.

And hope and prayers isn’t a plan.

The real problem we've had as fans for the last 25 years is that the team has had a part time GM. How could he learn to do the job when he's been a part timer and knows if he makes a bad decision, there is no penalty for that? Hell, you put me in that seat and I might be as bad, if not worse. He wants the title "football man' but doesn't want to put in the work to earn that. If he did, he might be pretty good to good at it.

He doesn't spend near the time in the day to day that GM's with jobs on the line do because he doesn't have to in order to stay gainfully employed. I think we might be actually shocked at how much time he devotes to the core duties of a GM in the NFL. The bottom line is the success came too easy and quickly and he didn't have to learn the job. The job is of his own creation, he's only doing the GM job that the owner wants him to do.

Booger is arrogant. He thinks he can do the job like the GM's in NE, BAL, SF, GB, NO and even PHL with them fully dedicated to it and him doing just enough to keep the owner happy.

Of course Booger wants to win, everybody wants to win. But wanting to win isn't action or commitment. The difference between wanting to win and winning is putting the work into it. How much time do you think Belichick spends just thinking about his roster v Booger? "We like our guys", isn't that what they like to say? Satisfaction is the enemy to progress.

The key will be immediate success. But Jerry will find a way to screw it up too. He always does.

And my issues with Jerry go beyond the last 25 years. He’s been a problem since Day 1. He was just bailed out in the early years with Jimmy.

As much as I respect Jimmy and his accomplishments I hold him indirectly responsible for still having to deal with Jerry. Without that early success Jerry wouldn’t have survived with this level of crappola.

He’d of been ran out of town and possibly have taken the Cowboys with him which might be ok too. This market would have received another franchise like Houston and Cleveland and been in much better position for football success.

Stephen may be able to replace Jerry Jones, the man that is his father. However, he could never replace the wisdom.

How could anyone ever expect Stephen to espouse such timeless quotes as the following Jerry Jones's classics:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Emmitt Smith is a luxury, not a necessity for the Cowboys," - When told that Emmitt was holding out at the beginning of the 93 season. The Cowboys would lose their first two games causing Charles Haley to throw his helmet up against the wall and demand that Emmitt be signed....which Jerry promptly did. Hey, nobody is that dumb. The Cowboys would ultimately end up in the Super Bowl with Emmitt as the MVP.

"I have to be a realist, I hadn't thought or hoped that we'd be sitting here after the sixth game making these adjustments. … I did not want to this year go to an inexperienced quarterback. I wanted to have the benefit of Drew Bledsoe. It hasn't worked out as of today. It just hasn't worked out. That to me is a step back." - Jerry's reaction to Bill Parcell's decision to bench Drew Bledsoe and replace him with Tony Romo making that game Tony's first NFL start

"I'm still so damn mad at Stephen, I get madder, every day, about missin' (Manziel). There's only one thing I wanna say -- I'd have never bought the Cowboys had I made the kinda decision that I just made right now, You need to drive across the water rather than lay up. And we laid up for this one. ... We just didn't get here makin' this kind of decision. I listened to everybody... and I'm ... not ... happy ..." - Jerry's reaction to not drafting Johnny Manziel

"If we had picked Manziel, he'd guarantee our relevance for 10 years." - Ditto

"He has the potential to be the kind of back that would step in there and be a No. 1 back, If he were not here, then I wouldn’t feel as good as we go into the season about what might happen." - Jerry's explanation as to why he didn't resign last NFL season's leading rusher and new Cowboy record holder for most rushing yards in a season. He had "Klepto Joe" Randle....who was cut before the end of the season after committing his third felony.

"This quarterback Weeden can drive the ball down field. He's a thing of beauty on throwing a football. His passing motion and his arm, frankly, you won't see a more gifted passer, power, accuracy, the entire aspect of it" - describing the quality backup QB he signed in the offseason. Tony Romo did go down with an injury and Weeden replaced him for three games....all losses. Weeden was promptly replaced.

“Would you get embarrassed if you were standing in this stadium? Seriously? The answer is no.” In 2015 Jerry was asked if he felt embarrassed by the Cowboys 4-12 performance after going 12-4 the previous season. This told fans everything they wanted to know about Jerry Jones's priorities."

"There are 500 coaches who could have won the Super Bowl with our team." - A statement he made prior to Jimmy Jonson's departure. After the Cowboys lost to the 49ers the following season, many began to wonder why Jerry hired Coach #501.

"The only way to break out is to gamble – take a chance with that first pick if you wanna dramatically improve your team." - Jerry describing his brilliant drafting philosophy in the 1st round. Screw research, analysis, and team needs, just roll the dice! Of course, this bold strategy was vacationing in the Bahamas the year Jerry passed over Randy Moss.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What can I say, Stephen.......dare to dream.

That's comedy gold, made funnier because the old man was actually being serious when he said those things. :muttley:

Jerry knows how to make money. Unfortunately it's afforded him a platform where he can convince himself he's a football guy no matter the results on the field.

And you don't get credit for 'wanting to win' anyway. That is the minimum acceptable standard for an owner, yet it gets touted by Jerry fans as some kind of virtue.
Jerry sounds like many of our noisemakers in public service. Tout an overly optimistic view for support then scramble for scapegoats when it disappoints.

The Cowboys will never be great again under Jerry’s leadership.

Yeah, as Bobby Hays says, that in itself makes them idiots.
Assuming they expect to have more success. Lol

Possibly we are the Idiots for buying into it and continuing to support such foolishness.

Who’s the bigger fool. The idiot who sells the pile of crap or the ones who keep buying it?

You're like a lot of folks here in that you seem to only watch half of the game and know half of the players.

When was the last time the Cowboys had a defense that scared someone other than their own fan base? We hold our breath every time the defense takes the field, hoping they can hold the other team to a field goal, then complain when the offense can't make up for their shortcomings.

The only thing "loaded" about the Cowboys is Jerry on game day.

I know there are "quotes" saying he did but I don't think Stephen was a fan of Garrett and if not for him we may still have ole red...
I haven’t seen any compelling evidence Stephen wasn’t a Garrett supporter and or had anything to do with parting ways with him.
