I desperately hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see this defense being consistently good. They may have some moments here and there, but if we take the fan glasses off and are honest, this is a patchwork crew. Could they surprise? Sure. Will they? I seriously doubt it.
I wholeheartedly agree.

Yes, the offense is loaded. The FO is always about that.

Always.

If it’s one thing I’ve learned over the last several years is that this team is consistently stuck in a perpetual cycle of good offense/average defense.

Nothing has really changed in Big D besides coaches.

It's hilarious when people mention Pollard along with all the starters.

Unless EzE goes down, I wouldn't give this guy the time of day. This is by no means a two back system.

Another irony ? ..the same year a one legged injured Rodgers knocked us outta the playoffs in 2014, we had the 2nd best defense
in the NFL in creating turnovers with 31, despite being the 15th ranked Defense in the NFL .. but we still did not reap the rewards that
the Saints and Packers did to win their respective SB's.
As I'm sure you know, Turnover differential is the bigger number

In 2014, the Packers were best in turnover differential.
Dallas had the misfortune of being 12-4 but losing a home advantage field tie-breaker to them.

Odds are very high that Dallas advances if the play them in Dallas and not in freezing Lambeau that January. Not that Dallas has a big home-field advantage, but playing at Lambeau in January is a huge home-field disadvantage.
And then, of course, there was the Murray fumble and the Dez catch .....sad stuff.

Most excited:
-New coaching staff/philosophies (No pets, no bs)
-Incredible talent at the RB and WR position, if this offense stutters for 3 quarters against every good team then we all know without saying who needs to be replaced
-1 year closer to a new face at the QB position

Most concerned:
-Daks business decisions on the field (less instinctive runs, more holding onto the ball instead of rifling it to the breaking receiver, etc.)
=Linebacker group
-Will the cornerbacks improve upon last season?
-Safeties (Would not be surprised to see a bunch of "I actually miss Jeff Heath" threads)
-Kicker (Just tossed away our most accurate kicker for a more expensive guy who has struggled recently, makes zero sense). Extra point - Anyone care to explain why we cut Dan Bailey again?

- Dan Bailey never seemed to recover from a lower body injury and continued struggling as a resort, Cowboys probably thought
he would never fully recovered and decided to cut him, maybe a great deal because he was among the highest paid FG kickers too
at the time. At the time it was a stunning shock to hear he was cut.

- Exit Bailey.Cowboys record book FG kicker ..
Enter Brett Mauer. Tremendous leg power, but erratic FG accuracy and definitely not a clutch kicker.

- I commend the new coaches on the LB moves, old regime likely thought Jaylon's lack of agility would be better hidden
at middle LB and he won't have to cover quite as much ground in a more limited area and less coverage responsibilities.
He can be explosive when he's gathered straight line forward momentum but it's an adventure if he has to stop, change directions
and reverse in coverage. He no doubt will be maxed in vs run/blitz pressure while coaches find ways to lessen his read keys and
best hide his coverage responsibilities.

- i had thought about LVE in the middle when i saw games where he got his hands on deflected middle passes. He has a knack for
getting in position in passing lanes, has INT hands and instincts, runs smoothly and extremely well for one his size, (almost 260 lbs)
and with his height (6'5) and enormous octopus like long arms, he will be difficult to throw over in the middle, he's gonna get INT picks.

If that neck mends and never becomes a problem, - and we provide interior big body plugs to protect him - he will have
Luke Kuehly/Brian Urlacher like impact in the middle for us.

- If we best preserve Sean Lee, and lessen his snap reps, use his great game experience and anticipation in schemes where
he can drop in zones rather than have to man cover in great lengths.Durability, age, declining range will always be a challenge
Could easily be his final year. ..or year and a half.

Could we see LVE and LEE in the nickel ..while Jaylon is blitzing up front in some nickel packages ?

My primary concerns will be defense and special teams until I see something better than what I saw last year.

i hope we don't take a step back in the OL unit with a lesser OL coach ( Philibin) and we have to endure another Paul Alexander mess again.

- Agree with Defensive concerns, especially with new coaches and a new scheme and system, ..along with no off season, no OTA's
no preseason and limited camp time.
We could basically be spending much of the season just catching up and having to endure confusion and blown assignments trying
to learn the defense.

- Yes special teams will be a new coach, new schematics and methods, and being so limited again, it may be a unit that has it's
struggles early on, before it finally gets settled at some point of the season. i just hope we can get Fassel the best specialist player
personnel we can.
Be interesting who we keep on or we cut and let go in the final roster cuts for the sake of the special teams help.

Forget last year. A lot of this is gameplan and coaching. We looked like crap against good defenses last year. But the situation is different now. Think about it. Do you think Jarred Goff was so good that the Rams team went to the SB on his back? Or that their system was above and beyond? The fact that the Cowboys didn't do well against good defenses isn't necessarily a result of said good defense. It was probably a result of not being sufficiently prepared for your opponent. That's a coaching issue in preparation. Elite defenses no longer exist. Our offense should be able to move the ball on anyone.

Goff is a system QB, a communications system QB. Without McVay in his ear making adjustments real time he is the biggest poser of a QB in the NFL. He cant read a defense if they were holding up a "C", "A", and "T"

I expect calls to be simplier, but on defense there are only so many coverages and stunts and blitzes. They may not be able to have play calls like Cadillac Zip 47 Tango but I am susre a simplier call system will be employed.

Five things i am most EXCITED about in this Cowboys 2020 year:

1 Much better HC,asst coaching impact in all 3 phases of the game (vs Garrett regime)
2 Better Defense plan/personnel per vs run, pass rush & ball hawks
3 Addition of C Lamb, expansion of Zeke, Pollard and Jarwin
4 Moore and Musshemeir returning to Dak
5 Contribution of rookie class (Lamb,Diggs,Neville,Biadasz,Bradley,)

Five things i am most CONCERNED about in this Cowboys 2020 year

1) Uncertainty about the Secondary
2) new OL coach Joe Philibin replacing Marc Columbo
3) RDE starting role
4) LB depth
5) Our Offense vs NFL's Best Defenses

Nolan is a big worry. He was hired because he is big buddies with Mike. Otherwise, he’d still be coaching LBs.

the Secondary coaches are not at KRichards level. It’s a set back for sure. #LegionOfBoom is gone.

Our LB coach hasn’t been a full time LB coach. He was an assistant at GB.

at least we have Edwards and Tomsula. They are Elite.

btw, our Assistant HC, isn’t even a football coach.

he was a players exec at GB.

5 i'm excited about
•coach mccarthy on the sidelines.
•the addition of ceedee lamb to michael gallup and COOOOOOOOOOOOOOP.
•mike nolan as def coord and the changes he brings.
•the return of the wolf-hunter and moving Van Jaylon to maybe their more natural positions...jaylon outside...wolf hunter to the middle.
we have 54 at OLB...55 at MLB...that worked well for coach landry.
•the beef added to the interior of our dline and what that could do in our run defense.

my 1 and only concern...
the impact of this weird off-season on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling and the implementation of any changes on offense and defense.
the impact it may have on our timing and execution.
it is a real concern...but every other team is facing it as well so it levels the playing field.
i just want football...damn it.
:flagwave:GO COWBOYS:flagwave:

nolan is definitely bringing changes. Ask Atlanta fans about the changes they got in 2012-2014.

the first one is all we’ve needed for the past nine years.
The second one was a big problem too but just gravy after #1

from what i've heard Edwards is supposed to play a bigger part of the LBs and certain packages than even LB coach
Scott McCurley, but they've given Edwards a specific title as " Sr. Defensive Asst."
Maybe this McCurley is more like an assistant like Ben Bloom was ?

Otherwise why would a guy with Edwards's resume and credentials accept a position that's under the LB coach?

Yeh, You know Rob Davis won't be taking over the team on the field, should McCarthy falter as a HC as the team fires
him in middle of the season, or else monster crisis unfortunately befalls MM to suddenly retire.
Why the team is giving Davis the "Asst. HC " title, i have no idea why,..they did not even do that with Calvin Hill when he was
their internal consultant.
He's not an actual coach so does Asst HC title keep other teams away from trying to hire him away ?

Five things i am most EXCITED about in this Cowboys 2020 year:

Here are some of mine.

Excited to see:
1) Second year of Kellen Moore’s offense, without the Garrett handcuffs on.
2) Aldon Smith. Will lead the team in sacks.
3) Mike Nolan’s aggressive style of defense, feast or famine
4) CeeDee Lamb’s playmaking ability. In his senior year he scored every 4 times he touched the football
5) How the special teams plays under Fassel

Concerned about:
1) Players getting COVID-19
2) Mike Nolan’s track record previously as a defensive coordinator
3) Play at the center position without Fredbeard
4) Weak secondary (will be a lot of high scoring games in 2020)
5) If Zeurlein can get back to his old self or if this is a replay of the failed Vanderjagt experiment

Excitements

1. No Jason Garrett as the HC. Think of how doomed we'd all be feeling right now if he was still here.

2. Zeke's quest up the rushing charts continues. Really want to see him break 10,000 yards for his career.

3. The Blake Jarwin breakout year. I have a feeling that he's going to be this year's La'El Collins: people are like "why did we pay him?", but it's soon going to be very clear.

4. The potential of the Cooper/Gallup/Lamb/Jarwin aerial offense to score like a pinball machine.

5. Xavier Woods / HaHa safety pairing. Nolan's defense puts a lot of stress on the safeties - they need to be smart to pattern match the offense, and they need to be versatile to handle a variety of different assignments. We have two safeties that are up for the job for the first time in eons.

Concerns

1. Coronavirus. It feels cheesy to bring up, but anything that can end the season before it begins is always going to be a concern.

2. McCarthy. Lost the team by the end of his tenure in GB. Continued to call an offense that the rest of the NFC North had figured out years ago. Stayed loyal to terrible DCs for too long. Tried to move into a "CEO" role after Aaron Rodgers literally usurped the offense and started audible'ing out of a third of his plays, then proved just as inept at team management as playcalling. I called him "NFC North Jason Garrett" for years with the Packers, cause there's just so many similarities between the two. It disgusts me that he ended up here, and unless he's changed significantly, I think it will cost Jerry Jones the last title shots of his lifetime.

3. Nolan. McCarthy's new Dom Capers, a paint-by-numbers kind of DC running a vanilla scheme. It'll be more aggressive than Rod's, but I think it'll be about as predictable.

4. Our cornerbacks. Awuzie's never taken the next step past average. Lewis looks worse the bigger his role gets. Diggs had questions about both his long speed and stiffness before the draft, so he comes with a pretty big risk (along with major upside). At least Brown's really dependable. This CB group will be a dice roll this season, and it could be a rough year if they all come up snake eyes.

5. LVE and Jaylon. Both immensely talented players, both with scary medicals and huge 2019 regressions. Their ability to bounce back isn't guaranteed.
