This is old news... it was widely reported Jason kept asking about his role were he to return... when he didn't get assurances he left.

It's extremely likely he was told he would not be starting and then the team signed Blake Bell to his TE2/blocking role Witten could of had.

Witten finished last year in the bottom 5 for yards below expectation on catches. This means he failed to generate the yards you'd expect on any given catch at an insane rate.
The 3 yard catch stuff was mostly fans being fans but in this case, stats bear out some sense of accuracy there.

I respect everything that he has done for the Cowboys, the way he carried himself on and off the field. But I think it was time unless he wanted to assume some sort of coaching position. This may still be an option for him but even in coaching they're rookies who need to work their way up before being named a starter.
You dont know how he carried himself off the field

I wonder what all those talks were about. Unlike so many of my fellow CZ junkies, I am still a big fan of the guy. He isn't what he was, but he still covers his paycheck. Where once he was a weapon, he's now more of a safety valve. It's too bad for him that we don't see that as a big need anymore.

He can’t do what McCarthy expects from a tight end in this offense. Heck, I’m not even sure if Jarwin can. In this offense, the TE is more like a hybrid FB; they sometimes start out of the backfield to disguise coverages, and they generally hang around closer to the line of scrimmage. Not his game, even in his prime.

Had 6 drops last year on 83 targets. that's a drop rate of 7.2%, which was 3rd highest on the team behind Gallup and Cobb and 23rd highest in the league.

6?

That's not bad.

Checked his stats. His catch % was 75.

His career is 71%

old man can still play.

Witten needs to stop crying. The so-called talks about him returning did not go as he wanted, boo hoo, get over it, you has-been. At best he was offered a drastically reduced role with the Cowboys and his ego could not handle that so he opted to bounce. Rather than retire gracefully, Witten will now have a drastically reduced role with the Raiders. lol

he is not crying he is answering a question that was asked to him as he has always done.

This situation is very much like Emmitt in 03. Parcells did not want players running to Emmitt to ask if this is how it was done and then have Emmitt not be on Parcells side.

I feel like this is very similar. McCarthy has to be the top dog in the locker room and everyone needs to follow him. Peculiarly McCarthy has brought none of "his" players here with him which is usually page 1 of the head coach manual. I am sure he didn't want Witten telling guys in the locker room they are doing things wrong.

Also two subtle things, probably not of any real matter but Witten is a known Packers hater...He let it be known he did not like them and I am sure he is not the biggest fan of McCarthy. He seemed to not be a big fan of Kellen Moore either.

this is completely false. Parcells used tight ends in 03-06 like H- backs. They used to wham block inside on running plays and line up in the backfield and motion and shift all the time. Campbell/Witten then Witten/Fasano were very good at this.

Jarwin is a wr. He will basically look like one if this is a McCarthy WCO in anyway. We have no idea what the offense is yet though so who knows but to me Jarwin can run and is going to be like a wr.

Of course he can still play. He had a few costly drops and a fumble. But can still play and the raiders will use him. I think his issue was he always had the option of playing as many snaps as he wanted. He pulled himself and put himself in the game. He had that trust with JG and other TE got very limited snaps. With MM he wasn’t going to have that option. MM uses his TE a lot and I bet that was kool with Witten but he would be in a rotation and these younger TE will have a advantage. Witten used the Y option and made a living with it. He will be able to run that and get open as long as he can walk.

Goes to show that incompetence is still running rapid in this organization....I guess people thought things were changed because they brought in McCarthy.

I still think he is a classy guy overall but I lost little bit of respect for Witt for retiring after the draft when the team looked bad (before 2018 season) then coming back when the team looked good (after 2018 season).

Raiders gave him $3.5 million just to sign his name.

Doesn't have anything to do with snaps or big Mike.

Only 22 players in the entire NFL dropped it at a higher rate than Witten. Only 5 TE's dropped it at a higher rate than Witten (OJ Howard, Eric Ebron, Tyler Eifert, Noah Fant and Jordan Akins).
