june 1970...the nashville marathon...my favorite session.
great track from the equally great Elvis Country LP.

they played an outdoor show in memphis...and broke Elvis' attendance record.
Elvis sent each of the band members flowers and a personal note congratulating them on their success.
they went to graceland to thank him.
Elvis' uncle told them he had just left for a tour and instead showed them around.
they found one of Elvis' old guitars and played with it...that night at their hotel room...inspired by their visit to graceland...they wrote this tune.

lotta folks covered it.
waylon's is from '72.
kenny did it later.
mickey newbury wrote and recorded it on one of his early 70s albums.
Never heard anything but Kenny's version. I never thought it was that good of a song that other people would cover it.
