Jon Machota posted what appears to be our projected starters at the beginning of the season. Looks like we have several upgrades. Like the addition of Everson Griffin is certainly an upgrade. Will Cedee Lamb be an upgrade over Cobb? Probably in a year, but not at first.

Anyway, it’s a very good looking set of starters.

IMO:
Definite Upgrade: DT, DE (additions of Poe, McCoy and Griffin)
Possible Upgrade: TE, Slot receiver (Lamb), S (Clinton-Dix)
Probable Downgrade: C (Hopefully not for long)

Anyway, looking at the starters this year, where have we upgraded and where have we possibly downgraded in your estimation?

over night i feel much, much better about our dline as a whole...and the depth at DE particularly.
if Gregory gets reinstated...holy crap:omg:

with DLaw and Griffen we have 2 outstanding run defenders on the edge.
can't wait to watch it unfold.

They are 2 different types of players so it’s not an easy comparison...but not sure I’m touting Griffen as an upgrade over Quinn. Maybe as a run stopper, but I don’t think as a pure pass rush threat. Depth with Aldon Smith is much better for sure

And I’ve made this argument before and I know people still won’t hear it, but Collins was massively underrated. Hopefully we get something close to prime McCoy, but I won’t be shocked if there isn’t much of an upgrade at all from McCoy going into his 11th year vs what we got from Collins when heathy.
Poe is no doubt a big upgrade over Woods/whoever we were running out at DT last year tho.

I’m curious to see if Looney stays as the starting C long term. Obviously Tyler Biadez was drafted as a C, and I still think Connor McGovern could also possibly step in there. IMO, Joe Looney is a good backup OL, but I don’t consider him a long term answer.

Ha Ha CD is an interesting addition. He definitely has some talent but he also been very inconsistent in his career, which is why he has bounced around some. Is he an upgrade? Maybe. But he’s a band aid. He’s not a long term fixture.

Poe and McCoy are also interesting in that were once top shelf players but are getting to age where consistency could be a problem. I like the signings but like Ha Ha, they aren’t here for long.

Clinton-Dix for Heath is a definite upgrade.

Good post except for Witten. The water boy is an upgrade over Witten. Literally the only place Witten should be used is very short yardage situations near the goal line.

Not only is Collins underrated(although nowhere near prime McCoy), McCoy is being massively overrated by the forum.

Kaiser, you said slight downgrade from Fred to Looney

Where do you rank Travis last year among C's, and where do you anticipate Looney to place this upcoming season?

I think Looney is an above average run blocker. Very good in fact. But...he is below average as a pass blocker and this is where I have concern for the long term C situation. Looney is a really good backup to have for our line. Can play multiple positions. But as a starter, I think he gets exposed.

I think Frederick was average in blocking but still elite in line calls and blitz pickups. I think Looney was average in blocking but below average in line calls and blitz pickups.

Martin may take over line calls so it may mitigate the issue, but IMO 70% of Fred is better than 100% of Looney.

I think some fans were just so relieved about the Center position not turning into a trainwreck when Fred went out that they overhyped the job Looney did. I'm just like you, I love Looney as a backup but I think we can do better than Looney as the starter.

Why do people keep ignoring the fact that williams had a major injury late in the year and most likely will not be ready for the start of the year. I wouldnt be suprised to see him get pup'd and miss the first 6 games because they will need the roster spot for the other lineman.

Agreed, hopefully Biadez will beat out Loon for the starting position.

Good post. IMO -

UGs
DTs by a quantum leap
CBs - I think the depth has improved and I feel strongly Lewis will ball out this season
WRs - CeeDee makes everything better
Interior OL - Draft plus the return of the other Connor gives them great depth and choices here
K - They had nothing to start last season
Overall depth - DL, OG, QB, CB, WR all look to be deep
DE - After yesterday and A Smith gives this group real potential
Coaching, Coaching, Coaching!!!

DGs
LB - Paper thin with big downside risk. I just don’t trust this group
S - JAGS galore
OT - Smith is a year older. How do you replace that guy?

I'm not so sure about "C" being a "probable downgrade". Looney did a pretty good job last year, and I'm not so sure Fredbeard was totally up to par.
If Looney starts I think he'll be alright till Biadasz is ready to go. But like you said, if there's any fall off, hopefully it won't last too long.

Good post. I think Jarwin will be a surprise and be an upgrade over the “2019” Witten. Also, I just don’t really see it with Byron Jones. He was a good player but didn’t make enough plays for me to call him a difference maker. Can easily be replaced in my option. Jourdan Lewis could have been an upgrade over Jones if the past coaching staff simply knew how to draft and play the “best players”. They were too caught up in height of a player (Rashard) and the Marinelli D-line traits (See Taco Charlton over TJ Watt pick).
