The time off argument is always overstated. The bigger issue is that the distractions that usually lead to a player taking time off in their prime are usually very hard to overcome. But, physically, if you come back in shape and can actually focus, the time off doesn’t slow you down much.

We saw the same thing when Vick came back.

If smith didn't go off the deep end and stayed somewhat healthy he would he considered one of the all time greats imo. Dude was a monster

Glad he turned it around. Even if he's half the player he was that would still be great lol

Kind of a catch-22, no? (Is that still a relevant phrase?)

Yes, the question as to whether Aldon is that good or Tyron has declined in his abilities is a legitimate question. On the other hand, if Aldon is showing us something despite Tyron being 80% of what he usually is, that is still very impressive.

And I will take an 80% Tyron over the vast majority of offensive tackles playing in this league today. Much of what he may be losing in athleticism can be compensated for in experience and preparation. He is a real professional and a very comforting presense on the field. Tyron is one of the most overlooked stars on this team and in the league.

If Aldon Smith can be close to the old Aldon Smith than this is the present day Charles Haley. With the offense able to put up points and a defense that can get after the QB that’s usually a recipe for a very deep playoff run and certainly a super bowl contender.

I honestly doubt he's working on new technique, with as much success as he's had....unless he has to change something up to compensate for an injury or something.

I would not make that assumption. Early in TC and could want to work on the basics, fundamentals or new techniques.

Anyway I was just giving an opinion why someone could be beat in TC when all out performance is not the goal.

Healthier last year than he has been in years. Didn't look like an old man with a bad back. Only missed games because someone rolled up on the back of his leg, not because of chronic problems.

Tyron's improved health last year was a huge bright spot. He's in the underpriced portion of his contract now, and still playing great.
I don't understand what some posters obsession with replacing Smith so badly. He is still top 3 in the league and even with the back issue he is still a freak of nature with hands and arms manufactured to play offensive tackle. All players decline with age but he is not going to at the average pace. Im confident to say we look for his replacement when he is ready to hang em up and not because he became a shell of his former self.

I understand that, and I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm simply doubting that's what happened. I think the reporter might have been informed of something like that.

I'm concerned about injury when the brain and body dont quite align.

I dont care what kind of shape people think he is in. The brain tells you to do one thing and the body will be five years behind when it comes to playing in a game.

Aldon Smith will perform well if he is healthy.

Large question.

I hope so big time. This team needs him.

When two high level players compete against one another, they usually win some, lose some. I do not think Tyron skill set is declining what so ever, if he gets his hands on you, it's a done deal. Aldon is a freak athlete, that possesses all the natural athletic abilities, he just maybe the type of player who can get out of bed and rush the passer. Him having success early on against Tyron is very, very encouraging.

In other words......they can only make each other better. Been saying since we signed him........I'm more concern about what's going on between his ears. I'm not sure many fans remember just how dominant he was the first few years in the league. I recall he wasn't just damn good pass rusher but mean SOB, talked a lot of trash.

BTW.......wanna bet a pretty penny DT will finally get strong consideration as our 2021 first-round pick? I honestly believe/hope Stephen/Jerry is starting to understand the impact of building a dominant DLine. Resign Smith or Griffen and we are not that far off.

If you projected 2017 forward in time, it would be grim. Back problems are serious and usually don't get much better. He got a little more healthy in 2018, and a lot better in 2019.

Some people haven't updated their projections on his health since 2017.

Im not surprised.

Tyron is declining with all his nagging little injuries and Aldon Smith was the best Pass Rusher in the NFL 5-7 years ago and a generational talent. If he gets up to game speed he can still be a monster even with 5 years sitting out hes probably better than everyone we have not named D-Law.
