It doesn't change anything. Someone can still pick off Bernard from the Cowboys practice squad, unless he refuses to go.

Many posted that he would get claimed. He didn't.

Another team can't sign him to their practice squad once he is on the Cowboys practice squad.

Another team can sign him to their 53 man roster; however, it is not a waiver claim therefore the agent would likely give the Cowboys the option to bump him to their 53.

That is what I thought at one point; however, it's not 100% clear to me with regards to the details.

  • In July 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL increased the practice squad size to 16 for the 2020 season, with six slots open to players with any amount of experience. Additionally, each week, teams may designate up to four practice squad players who then cannot be signed by other teams to their active rosters.[18] Additional protocols are in place for activation of large numbers of practice squad players in the event of an outbreak.[19]

It's the "each week" bit that's not clear to me.

The original Covid year rules limited that to 2 times per player for the season.

The limit refers to the number of times a PS can be elevated to the gameday roster, still receive his PS pay, and revert back to the PS the next day without going through waivers. I can’t find anything limiting who can and cannot be protected or any limit on how many times. It appears to me a team can protect the same 4 players for all 16 weeks.

Ok, tell me something I didn't already know or say? It's like you're looking for an argument or something? Nothing changes. Bernard can still get picked off our practice squad. Period. No matter how you slice it.

Dallas gest to protect 4 PS players each week so he can only be poached if they don’t protect him.
That's a big IF, and the Cowboys would have to do it every week. Hope they don't slip up like they did cutting him and allowing him to slip to their practice squad.

I’m a fan of Bernard’s... but the fact is that all of the 31 other teams twice had a chance to get him (draft and waivers yesterday) and all 31 twice passed on him.

I think he will be safe unless he’s elevated and makes some good plays in a game.

Of course, you can never say never, so if someone’s mlb/ilb gets hurt, a team could take a chance on him.

Still, I think he’s probably pretty safe.

Possibly, but I doubt it. Bernard is healthy, and he was tearing it up. Someone will pick him up. McCarthy screwed up, especially since Sean Lee will start the season on IR and Luke Gifford is nursing an injury. Huge risk having only 5 healthy LBs to start the season with 2 of those as backups did not perform better than Bernard throughout camp.

You said Bernard would not clear waivers but he did.

You have absolutely no idea how well anyone really performed in training camp.

There are really only 2 traditional LB spots in this scheme. They'll use hybrid DL/LB types like Anae when they play more than 2 LBs.

Joe Thomas will be the 3rd LB and March will be the 4th LB if Gifford is out and until Lee returns.

They were not going to start the season with a rookie udfa as a top 4 LB on the depth chart.

How do you know that they really only have 2 traditional LB spots due to scheme? You have absolutely no idea either. Just talking. From what I understand, they basically run a 4-3 base with interchangeable schemes. Plus, what kind of thought process is that to not start the season with an UDFA rookie LB as depth, even though he's been performing lights out throughout camp?

Nickel is the new base because of extra wrs being common league wide.
