It's my biggest concern since we hired a new coaching staff.Hasn't been a defensive coordinator since 2014 in Atlanta.
Took over the Falcons DC job and inherited the #8 defense in the league.
It went to #12, #28, and #32 the next three years.
Nobody offered him a DC position since then.
Excited?
He was so good all those teams let him go. Sounds like the type of guy you want in a key position. Kinda the same story with Rob Ryan just living of his fathers legacy. I am not making any judgement until the season is over good or bad but your argument just doesn't hold water. If he is not a good D-Coordinator then why did so many NFL teams hire him to be their D-Coordinator?
He has been hired as DC by 8 NFL teams not including the 49ers that hired him as Head Coach and General Manager.
He departed most of those teams because the Head Coach got fired. He was so good all those teams let him go. Sounds like the type of guy you want in a key position. He departed most of those teams because the Head Coach got fired.
Only 2 times did he depart before the Head Coach departed and in both instances the HC was gone from those teams the following year.
2007: Hired Greg Manusky to completely take over as DC (Nolan had been HC/GM & ran the defense in 2005 & 2006).
- Details for anyone that is interested:
- Giants: Departed in 1996 when the HC was fired.
- Skins: Fired by owner Dan Snyder (HC Norv Turner preferred to keep him. Turner fired following season.)
- Jets: Departed with HC. The HC Al Groh was really just an interim because Belichick has been hired but resigned after 1 day.
- Ravens: Departed after 2004 season to become the 49ers Head Coach and GM.
- 49ers: Fired as HC during the 2008 season. The original owner's Grandson had become the defacto GM "team president and operating head of the franchise".
- Broncos: Departed the Broncos in 2010 after Dolphins and Bills requested to interview him. He preferred to depart from Broncos HC Josh McDaniels.
- Dolphins: Departed in 2012 after the Dolphins HC was fired.
- Falcons: Departed after 2014 season when HC was fired.
- As HC and GM of the 49ers:
- The 49ers made the odd move of hiring a D-Coordinator as both Head Coach and General manager.
- Nolan was a in a bit over his head taking on both jobs; however, the 49ers draft history during his time was decent.
- Some of his draft picks (in 3 drafts):
- David Baas Center Michigan
- Frank Gore Running back Miami (FL)
- Adam Snyder Guard Oregon
- Vernon Davis Tight end Maryland
- Delanie Walker Wide receiver Central Missouri State
- Patrick Willis Linebacker Mississippi
- Joe Staley Offensive tackle Central Michigan
- Ray McDonald Defensive end Florida
- Dashon Goldson Safety Washington
2008: HC only. VP of Player Personnel Scot McCloughan promoted to GM. That resulted in a couple of terrible drafts before they hired a new GM in 2010.
When Jim Harbaugh was hired in 2011 the 49ers had instant success (13-3) with many core players that Mike Nolan had added to the roster.
He had been gone for 2.5 seasons before Harbaugh had "instant success".Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his success, especially the, "instant success," part.
He had been gone for 2.5 seasons before Harbaugh had "instant success".
They had changed out 1/2 the roster by then but many of the core players were players acquired by Nolan.
Also his record as a Head Coach is irrelevant to his ability as a D-Coordinator.
Wade Phillips has been a terrific D-Coordinator in the NFL but was a terrible Head Coach.
He has two physical cb s that can tackle. He has 3 physical de s that play the run well and we're still giving us runs.Hasn't been a defensive coordinator since 2014 in Atlanta.

D was bad today. Hoping it's just a matter of getting it together w/ a new DC and scheme and such.
