The defense is a hot mess

Don’t get me wrong, I was tired of our predictable four man rush, which was exclusively a one gap scheme, and regularly getting gashed by the run. The opposition knew exactly what we were doing. But, this isn’t the answer either.

It’s all sizzle and no steak. Instead of being predictable it’s just unsound. And at some stage we’ve got to get pressure on the quarterback. Let Griffen and Lawrence occasionally put their hands in the dirt and get after the quarterback.

This defense sucks and it’s not the talent. It’s the rediculous scheme.

The scores really don't do its incompetence justice. That dropped pass today was a TD. Against the Rams, there was a screen pass that was wide open for the guy to take it to the endzone and he dropped it. The defense is basically counting on the other team to screw up to get a stop.

Aldon Smith is the team's best defender and if a 30 year old that hasn't played in 5 years is your best defender . . . you have a problem.

Honestly I’m looking forward to Gregory coming back. Lawrence and Griffen don’t really fit the style of defense we’ve been playing. We should’ve signed Griffen last year. I’d also go out and sign Earl Thomas. This secondary needs a veteran who knows how to play. I don’t think we’ll be a good defense this year. But Gregory and Thomas might give us enough to compete. We’re not gonna score 40 and convert onside kicks every week.

It's the talent. Or rather the lack thereof.

Agree. Nolan may get more rush using a 4 man line primarily. DLaw, Griffen, Smith n Gregory will be tough to stop... none of these guys are 3-4 OLBs truly.

I think for this year the talent is way more 4-3, don't force the scheme. Off-season it was said scheme will fit talent, is it?

They need a Safety.

With Gregory back we can move DLaw and Griffin inside on passing downs. Don’t understand his 6 game suspension.

The Pass rush is non existent and dreadful. Only 2 sacks on the season and both from new guys
I'm more disturbed that Nolan sees it and will just rush 4 at times. The blitzes are predictable too. I'm not a fan of this defense through 2 weeks. And I don't even think the issue are the players.

Its not the scheme, its the player having to figure it out on the fly without minicamps or a preseason. They have had exactly 8 days of being able to tackle someone, they will settle in.

The scheme is an issue.

You guys are ignoring the history of Mike Nolan. He's never been considered a great or even good DC. I could buy growing pains in a new system if there was some sort of track record with the DC that indicated he was consistently putting good defenses on the field but Nolan has spent much of his career as a DC putting mediocre to bad defenses on the field. I am not sure why people expect he'll suddenly start putting good defenses on the field.

New system
New coach
New players
No off season to speak of
Not surprising to me they have issues

You forgot the biggest issue - the DC has an inconsistent past, with his recent stints in Atlanta and Miami being blah.

The DC hasn't put good defenses on the field consistently. Again, why are people expecting him to suddenly turn into a good DC?

He fielded a decent D in Atlanta in 2012, but then the defenses there fell off the map in 2013 and 2014. His defenses the two year before Atlanta in Miami were average. 2009, he fielded a decent defense in Denver. He had a good run in Baltimore but that was over 15 years ago.
