For those of you wondering why the Atlanta players did not jump on the ball ..

The upfront players on the “hands team” are taught to block the coverage team and let the hands specialists right behind recover the ball. They are used to a ball bounding high and over their heads. The unusual nature of Zuerlein’s kick froze them in bewilderment.

It’s almost a shame that they had to use this surprise play on a week 2 game and not save it for a win or go home situation.

But man. What an incredible coaching job.

Which is why Cowboys need to get far more credit for that kick than that's being given.

I posted yesterday that this was 100% as much a play made vs Atlanta choking. That kick and the movement of Cowboys ST's without regard for where the ball was behind them showed design vs luck.

That was football art folks. Best onsides kick ever imo.

One of the craziest things I have ever seen. When it happened, I was wondering if the Falcons were just assuming we'd touch it before it went 10 yards but that thing just kept spinning and turning like a big left to right putt at Winged Foot.

And there is zero chance a Garrett led staff would have come up with it either.

Bad teams find a way to lose. Cowboys luckily played a team worse than they are. And worse coached.

I wonder how many players would let the ball spin the required 10 yards? Really sneaky when they can count on the other team not being coached properly and not knowing the rule #1 of an onside kick.

When he kicked it I thought it had zero chance of getting to the 10 yard mark - I will give them that

that type of spin is hard to pin down if timed poorly reaching to touch it and it hits your hand it squirts out.

the kicking team can no longer have a running start. ergo it makes far more sense to kick the ball in such a way that it travels slowly, not quickly. the kick was brilliant. a benchmark event.

I didn't think it was going to reach 10 yards, i thought it was headed out of bounds and then it took the sudden turn and i think that is what caught them off guard, no reason to try and recover it if it won't reach yards, but when it turned, someone should have jumped on it but I think they were in shock. But that was a 1 time thing, gotta find a new way to do it now.
