How in the world did the Saints build this defense?

SP left the last year Parcells was here to be a HC. He tried to trade for Tony Romo and Dew Brees made the best out of second chance. So it wasn't in the cards.

Giving up 17 points in the first half is not good. They also paid WAY too much to get Davenport. 2 1sts for a guy from UTSA.

Saints are all mystique. Very very overrated offensively outside of the Dome and defensively they can be had

Another TD drive for the Raiders, this one 89 yards. They're 10 for 16 on 3rd down and 2 for 2 on 4th.

Saints defense has been getting steamrolled since this thread was hastily created.

What am I missing about the praise for their defense? I was listening to some talking heads today who said the Saints will need to put up 30+ a game to compete due to a bad defense...

How’d they get such a good defense AND have a top 3 WR, top 5 RB, and Drew freakin Brees (who happens to hold just about every meaningful record a QB can hold)... oh and a very solid Oline?!

Forgot about Will Lutz who is certainly a top 5 kicker.

The part that sucks is Sean Payton was once on the Cowboys staff and would’ve certainly accepted a head coaching position here when Parcells split.
It's not like all that beat the Raiders tonight. The team that you think is all that lost tonight.

Who'd they lose? Saints were 11th on D last year.

It is shrewd talent scouts
Mean GMs, skinned-flint auditors
and players so hungry they'll devour video and conditioning.
Blokes, Jerry is a merchandising genus/genius and a mental midget (sorry to the short people community) when it comes to HOLDING ON TO 'STARS', GAMBLING ON POSs such as women beaters, etc.and waiting ON REHAB!

They’ve got a bunch of guys still on their rookie deals on that side of the ball. Marcus Williams, Alex Anzalone, Sheldon Rankins, Trey Hendrickson, Marcus Davenport and Marshon Lattimore.

So the answer is very good drafting, but they’re in trouble after this year. They’ll likely lose Brees plus at least three guys from the above list over the next two years.
To add to this there best offensive lineman (Ryan Ramczyk) is on the last year of his rookie deal and will want at least 20 million dollars a year come next season

They already had to let pro bowl guard Andrus Peat leave this year because of cap reasons and now Ryan will want 20 million on top of all the other rookie deal players you mentioned.

Saints are basically the defensive version of the 2014 dallas cowboys (Smith, Frederick, Martin, Murray, and Bryant all on affordable rookie deals)

I got a good laugh with some people drooling and slobbering all over the Saints and their better than the 85 Bears’ defense.

And then the Raiders spanked the crap out of the Saints, scoring on 6 of their last 7 drives.

Great responses but I've got to add because of all those answers and Payton of course, it's that Louisiana bayou CULTURE that team creates which gives it cohesiveness and continuity. In other words, they got VOODOO, not "Rowdy." You want to see that culture at work in the cheerleaders, watch the you tube Saintsations performing a music vid in the swamp to Taylor Swift's "22." Sounds silly but I think the culture is totally different from ours and it works. Like others have said, they don't have to tolerate an overshadowing Jones ego that competes with the TEAM.
