Where are the defenses?

The play against the better teams has been the issue all along and the stats do not tell that story.

The rap has been that they do not bring their A game to the better contests and that has been fact. Until that changes, they go nowhere.

They've been able to get one game that they play outta their heads and we get fooled into thinking that's gold and it's not. Inconsistency has been their challenge and so far this year, they've not changed from that. I am not sure what this team is yet.

It starts in SEA but it must continue for them to change this good against the bad and mediocre against the good. Or if they get their butts handed to them in SEA, they've got a real challenge. McC is trying to instill confidence in them by placing his confidence in them and he got a dividend on Sunday. He's tiptoeing on that line with his decisions based on his faith in them and that can backfire.

I agree and my opinion the game plan vs very good teams has been conservative playing not to make mistakes and playing it close to the vest. I'm interested in seeing what game plan Dallas will bring to this game. Will it be conservative or thrown the kitchen sinks at Seattle? I'm looking forward to seeing how the Cowboys plan on attacking Seattle.

Ravens, Steelers, Saints, Buffalo, LA and the Bears are pretty solid defenses.
Saints gave up 34 on the road last night. Bears have played really poor offenses. Bills gave up 28 to MIA and have to have their QB playing at a MVP level, which he has been.

BAL and PIT are the closest thing to it as both are at the top of tackling teams. They both take as much pride in tackling at they do their QB's. Even in an off year, they will not have a bad D because of the lack of tackling.

BAL gets KC next Monday, should be a great test for both of them.

No preseason/offseason is the correct answer
Fantasy football is the answer.

Many rule changes promote offense, which promotes casual fan interest.

Itll change the day the billionaires all get in a room and decide the purity of the game is more important that their wallets.

Dont hold your breath.

This is also why I think big money for corners isnt a great idea.

The best of the best are extremely limited because of the rules.

Not to even mention the bad calls.

Well, one thing we can say about McC so far, he hasn't been playing not to lose. One of Garrett's fondest sayings was "it's hard to win in the NFL". It is especially hard when a team weakens their strength against the opposition.

I look at DAL and SEA and see no other way than going balls to the wall for both of them. They'd both like to run the ball and control the game but I do not see that happening. Neither has the D to allow them to play that kind of game. I do not see this as a counter punch kind of fight.

That also began to change with the emergence of the freak WR's like Moss, Calvin Johnson, Owens and the Cowboys get one Sunday with Metcalfe. I watched him at Ole Miss and he was amazing, a true freak of nature. Guys that are built like he is should not be able to do that with their bodies.

Yes, the Cowboys defense is suspect but show me a stout defense this season. Yes, I know, it's early but defenses are ahead of offenses early in the season but not this season..

This is beginning to look like college ball with the scoring. This past weekend, only 4 games had winners score less than 30 and one was 28 and the other 26. 4 games had each team get north of 30. The Saints could only manage 24 last night and lost.

I've watched a lot of games and defenses aren't stopping offenses, they're stopping themselves with mistakes and penalties.

The NFL is looking like the OU Theory of Defense. We don't need a defense, you need to score 40.

Before this season began, I was doubtful about the Cowboys because of the defense but I don't see any other defense out there and the NFC team with the best one in MN can't score and is 0-2. The other one, in SF, just got hammered by injuries.

We'll get a better look this Sunday but SEA gave up 30 to NE and I recognize the bagboys' names at the local supermarket better than NE's receiving corps.

In the NFC, 7 teams have failed to average 25 ppg. 5 are 0-2, 1 is 1-1 and the Bears are 2-0, mainly because of the teams they've played can't score.

Right now, the 2 best teams are GB and SEA because they're averaging over 35 ppg and both have given up an average of 27.5 ppg. That's crazy, that's not the NFL.

I agree, the Cowboys defense leaves a lot to be desired but this might just be a season where that doesn't matter. Offense and scoring is the name of the game so far and they're built to play that game.

ATL has a crummy defense except for turnovers but one major thing I noticed in that game about the Cowboys offense that was different, they can move the ball and score in a hurry and I don't believe they've arrived at their true tempo yet.

Don't count them out in SEA because that once vaunted SEA defense has given up an average of 27.5 ppg and unlike some Cowboys offenses of the past, this one is built for shootouts with teams that want to play that game, like GB and SEA.
We just can’t get off to that kind of start again. We do that against better teams and we lose badly. We are picking up the tempo. And the work Dak did with the WR in the offseason is showing up. I noticed Sunday that Dak saw they weren’t covering Shultz. Daks fumble was actually a attempted shuffle pass to Shultz that was knocked out of his hand. He came back to him and even used Bell. Dak seems to play best under extreme pressure. This is what we saw from him earlier in his career. I think this team is going to be ok. MM needs to maybe chill on going for it so much. Guessing he is trying to show his players he believes in them. Soon they will start picking these 4th downs up. Maybe give this team a little swagger. But this Defense needs to get more pressure. Was very surprised we have little or no pass rush.

Ridley would have schooled Byron had he been here too. I’m with you. He might be the best route runner with Cooper now.

These college type offenses are being driven by their college type Qb’s.

This is what the NCAA is developing for the NFL.

I’d really like to see us use Dak like KC, Balt and Hou use their mobile athletic QB’s.

NFL prolific passers aren’t being as developed at the college level anymore

Goff and Wentz are more of the exception than the rule now.

The league made a decision to relax the rules related to offensive holding, another contributing factor.

One thing I've seen is that rushing is up across the league. I haven't seen a number, but the average YPC has got to be in the high fours. My guess is that teams are running the ball on rusty defenses and exploiting that lack of contact reps, and it will be interesting to see if that tightens up as the season goes along.
