With the way our CB's looked vs. ATL they had to keep 2 protected this week.

It does not include LB Francis Bernard.

Will you be okay if some other team steals him?

Or...

Does this mean Bernard will be moved to the 53-55 manned roster?

Carter is a surprise. He's a DE, though. They must like him. It's not like we're hurting for DEs this year.

Long article on Carter. He got 20+ UDFA offers and picked us. We gave him more money than any of our other UDFAs. Given the article, I expect he'll be protected all year.

Why would anyone be upset about Bernard? He’s 100% media sensation at this point. He hasn’t even played in an exhibition game. His plays were in practice and we only know he made a few good ones. The reporters never say who was way out of their gap on a big run play or missed tackles in practice.

well, if you believe anything from the practice reports he was consistently one of the better players. we are thin and underperforming at LB so it would seem logical that he should be on the Active or protected.

They signed LB Rashad Smith from the Bears PS to the active roster a week ago. So that should say something right here. Most likely because Smith had NFL experience, maybe knows Nolan's system. As where Bernard is an UDFA still getting the entire experience down as well as the schemes.

Bernard will get his chance. Just may not be until next season. However getting protected also says good things about him.

I think Eric Smith was promoted to the active roster as a regular players. However another site shows him being moved back to the PS.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Dallas_Cowboys_roster
This is usually updated pretty quick, as in the same day.

https://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/dallas-cowboys/transactions
This may lag a day or so at times.

Both sites are much more quick to be updated. I rarely go to the team site anymore.

I thought he got put on the 53 man roster too (when Brown went on the IR). So if it was just one of the temp PS activations, then Dallas has a free spot on their regular 53 man roster (were maybe holding it open for Leary/ Veldheer).

Would you be okay with losing LB Francis Bernard in order to protect a 2nd practice-squad CB?
All fine. The depth at LB on this team is strong!

If nothing else I thought Bernard would be an asset covering kicks. It was reported he didnt show enough to win a job there, and that's a bit of a problem.

I doubt anyone is going to put him on their 53.

They have no film on him after Utah, when every team passed on him in the draft.

Is there a limit on the number of times a player can be protected? I thought I read somewhere there was a three game limit. But I can't find it anywhere, must be confused with some of the other new rules.

That's a good question.

I had heard on a Cowboys radio show that the issue with Bernard is that he is "slow", and that "he knows he's slow". To me, that says that the team clearly sees his limitations, and the player does as well. So maybe in an effort to compensate, Bernard 'guesses', and sometimes he guesses wrong.

And if he's limited enough physically, maybe they see what his ceiling truly is, and it's not high enough to worry about him being poached. A risky strategy, and it will be interesting to see how it goes. Given the issues a team linebacker, I would have protected him.

Both of them left without contracts.

No. There is a limit on the number of times a player can go from the PS to the 55 and then pass freely back to the PS without being exposed to waivers. That is why the Carr deal was unique. He agreed that once his limit was up, he could be released and then would re-sign. Because he is vested he would not be subject to waivers and agreed he would just re-sign with Dallas each week after being cut.
