Every football team develops an identity- what it knows about its strengths and weaknesses, and how that relates to winning.

Here’s how we know it’s too early in the season to know what your team is.....ask yourself this question: What is the Cowboys’ identity as a team this year? To me, it’s too early to tell because I don’t think any of us can answer that question with any certainty yet.

Remember the 2014 and 2016 teams? Both had outstanding time of possession offenses with decent defenses that didn’t have to be on the field as much. Seems like that identity is gone now.

But if you were speculating....what is this current team’s identity? New coaching staff, numerous new players. The options below are too limited, but it’s just to create some discussion. What is this team?
  • A. A great offense, built around scoring 30+ to win- strong passing game, good running game with a mediocre defense that is opportunistic with TO’s
  • B. An average offense and average defense, each week. You never know which unit will step up and play well.
It’s still too early to really know what this team’s identity is. But in order to build a winner, a team has to know what it’s strengths are and play to that. The next few weeks that identity will start to emerge.

What kind of team is this? What is your description of its identity? What are it’s strengths and weaknesses if you’re being honest and not wearing the homer fan glasses?

Too early to tell but we are an explosive offense. We can play with anyone and yes that includes KC. As long as we play fast.

Way too early to tell on defense but I would like to see TO’a emerge soon..

The last game is more in lines what Mike said in the offseason. He wants to attack. He had a lot of time at home to study his buddy Andy Reid. They attack all the time. NO’s does the same thing.

honestly, this has been obvious since last year...………….Their identity is clouded because the coaching staff wont commit.

Their identity needs to be Dak and the passing game.

This team I think is evolving away from the run first mentality of the Garrett years. We will still have an effective running game, but we no longer have the dominant OL.

I already know what most responses will be. :muttley:

I like that MM seems to be more aggressive that Garrett was. Or it could be they had to be, because they fell behind as usual. So that remains to be seen. Let's see how he manages the game with a lead. Such as a 10 point or more lead. We know they will stay with the run game for sure, but to what degree.
I love what this offense can become, and already is becoming. They have no problem moving the ball downfield most of the time. But how can they keep improving, as do not forget, the more games, the more game film for DC's to plan. however since it is mostly as last years, they already have most of what they need to plan for. Stop Zeke first, then go after Dak.

Defense, we need another 2 weeks at least. and that will still be in flux. But probably more like 6 to 8 weeks. When Gregory returns, then what, will he help this pass rush that seems non-existent. They really need to settle down a lot before we can even think about it.

ST's, does it already seem like they improved. Other than Pollard taking too many chances. We actually have a K that our hearts won't stop waiting to see if he makes the kick.

Coaching, MM, I understand him being aggressive, take those chances as they have. But seems to be a bit too much for me. He too will learn as the coaches will find out the players limits if they can actually pull those plays off. That includes the ST's plays / decisions.

I am trying to keep a tempered approached, not let my enthusiasm take over, as I usually do, and most of the time look at the bright spots and seek out the good. And there have been some good. But there is also some bad. Get those corrected soon.

The Oline will be fine when Collins and Tyron are back. The days of needing the top Oline in football are over however. Plenty of teams have 3rd, 4th, and 6th round picks playing on the line and are just fine. That was a JG philosophy and Philbin proved you can still be productive without them.

KC struggled big time against the chargers and a rookie QB getting his first start. I'm not scared of KC

Especially against Seattle this week. Their secondary is maybe the worst in the league and they don't have great pass rushers

Team identity is offense, offense, offense. With the addition of Lamb, our best bet of going as far as we can this season is making every game a shootout. Hopefully the defense can improve enough to become above average. I think once the D line vets start to get into a groove we will.

Jerry has a casino on his boat?
We also are the first team to have a casino as a sponsor. Winstar casino is the official casino of the Dallas Cowboys .

I’ve heard Riverboat Mike might be leading a revolutionary conversion from conventional wisdom to his new analytical implementation in the NFL :)

Ist lesson is the Watermelon kick . Lol

We don't have a football identity. The Cowboys are basically Rocky Balboa before the first fight against Clubber Lang in Rocky III. Hotboyz...it's a lifestyle and all that nonsense.

Good points. I think the question is do we need the dominant OL to be effective in the running game. Maybe our passing game can open it up. Our running while not dominant has still been effective.
