I know it's frustrating, but we all need to be patient w/def

The Cowboy Defense has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far, pretty much the same type of production we saw last season. Several things we need to consider and hope the defense improves as the season progresses:

-The defense has an entire new staff, running a complete new defensive scheme. Any time there is a scheme change, there are going to be growing pains. Moving from a simplistic scheme under Marinelli to more of a complex one is going to take time.

-Without an off-season, several players are behind the eight ball so to speak. Rookies such as Diggs has been thrown in the fire and must learn on the job as a starter. The other rookies will make their biggest impact on special teams in year 1. Some veterans are starting off slow as they would still be getting ready with the pre-season games. It's very hard to simulate game action in practice sessions. A player like Aldon Smith, even though had a good first game, needs time to get his body back into football condition. Many thought they would bring me along slow at the start of the season. It's something to watch when Gregory returns in a few weeks.

-The defense as a whole has had to deal with a rash of injuries, to key players. They are almost through their entire depth at corner, onto their #4 LB, lost Gerald McCoy for the entire season. This unit isn't talented enough to overcome so many losses to the unit.

I do believe we will see improvement within the unit, but not drasticially, either. Clearly there are major holes within the secondary, which you can hide so much. Still have question marks at LB as well.

Also, look at the defenses around the league. For some reason offenses seem to be ahead of defenses this year and many teams have been having uncharacteristic defensive issues and have dealt with an abundance of injuries.

Do I like how we’re playing right now? No. But do I see the potential for this thing to come together in October-November? Yup.

LVE, Brown, Lee, Gregory coming online soon.

But we keep dropping like flies. Now Awuzie too.

Gotta hope we get healthy faster than we keep dropping, or it will get really ugly.

he'll adjust to his talent...which is a change from the last staff.

Exactly right. We'll have a better idea come week 5.

No preseason hurts the defense more than offenses imo

Nolan supposedly is a great player developer. He has a lot of youth to work with. so I hope that is true.

On the bright side, Hill is flashing. Joe Thomas is a decent LB. Everson Griffen will get better as the season goes along. Diggs almost had a pick against Atl. LVE, Brown and Gregory will help if they can return.

Downside-What is Jaylon Smith doing out there? He is the biggest disappointment to me on the Defense. He has to play much better. The team needs him to be a solid player. He is a liability right now IMO.

This might just be the year that having an even mediocre defense won't bite a team as long as they have a good enough offense to score points.

Look at this week's opponents, given up 55 through 2 games but scored 73 and they're 2-0. Their D is actually worse, statistically, than the Cowboys.

The new NFL, so far two games in, is that you don't have to outplay your opponent, just outscore them. The score has always determined the winner but you know what I mean. I think if there is any season that a strong O can carry a team to the Big Dance, this is it.

Add to this that the pick play is the most inconsistently called play thus far into the season and the coaches know it. It's called just enough to keep it on the books.

The NFL couldn't have ordered up a better start to this "captive" season than being on a scoring tear toward a new season record.

And while I do pride myself of being a bit of a purist and liking some D ball, under these circumstances, I want scoring, I want action.

This is a most unusual football season under any regard and I don't think it's going to settle down soon.

It's hard to believe there are like 7 or 8 defenses that have played worse than ours so far, including Seattle's in some ways. I'd rather them suck now and hopefully improve throughout the season but it's hard to be too positive given what I've seen so far. It's all I can go by. I haven't even seen flashes from the front 7 to indicate anything good will come from the Defense this year. Hope I am wrong.

If they end up middle of the road this year even, it will be better than I am expecting.

KC’s defense wasn’t all world last year....they got better as the season went along and were really good the last quarter of the season.
