When you make a promise, you should keep it

Does anyone else feel like I do that it's extremely important to keep your word? I was brought up that your word is gold. If you say you're going to do something or not do something, you keep that promise. Like if you have a kid who plays soccer or football and you promise to go to his game, you had better make certain you live up to that promise. It can really hurt a person if you flake out on things like that, even if it's a thing that doesn't seem like a big deal.

This thread is therefore to reinforce keeping promises. If you wish to, record here a promise that's important for you to keep. I'll do the same. There's power in making a commitment and keeping it. What it does is it makes your word of value. Some people's word is a throwaway because they don't respect people enough to keep it. That's a very sad situation. Conversely, when your word is gold, it's a powerful thing. I'll go first ........

I promise for the rest of the year to not have sex with Amber Heard. I know this is a tall order, as she's attractive and such a thing would be very tempting. However, I've seen the damage she did in Johnny Depp's life, and it's a big red flag about her. Going to bed with her would be a big thrill in the moment, but in the long run, it's certainly a bad idea.

Some of you probably have doubts that I'll follow through and keep this promise, but I assure you I will. Keeping this promise will verify that I'm a man of high integrity. At the end of the year, I'll be able to post that I've kept this promise. Don't believe me? Just wait.

Okay, now it's your turn. What promise to you choose to make? Be sure to be specific and to include a timeline. Thanks.

You may be a model in real life. Have Johnny's Depp good lucks and charm. Even so, I believe your chances of getting busy with Amber Heard is less than zero percent. Just a feeling I have gotten from stuff read in the past. :p

In my life I have noticed most difficult promises are the easiest to keep, while minor ones are sometimes easiest to break. I wonder if anyone else shares that impression?

I wish more people thought like this, if I give my word to someone about anything it is 100% and the only thing that will keep from breaking it is death. It drives me crazy how many people give their word and don’t follow through. Most of those people I have known personally are no longer friends of mine which is part of the reason I have so few.

I don’t care if it’s “I give you my word that I’ll be at your rugby game“ or “I give you my word I’ll call you today” or “I give you my word I will donate my kidney for you.” If you break your word, big or small, without one hell of a good explanation then you are dead to me. If you can’t give me your word, fine, don’t give it but don’t give me your word you will do something and not follow through.

I give my word that I will celebrate the exact same day that ezekiel “ewok” elliott is no longer on this team.

Word.

On a serious note, I completely agree. My "not have sex with Amber" promise was a smarty pants one, but in real life if I say I'm going to do something, it's super important to do it. I get that from my Dad. It's what he taught us. He's so good about showing up and on time that in the rare case that he's 5 minutes late, we know something is wrong. I've had to end friendships with people who don't honor their word. If someone always flakes, you know you just can't rely on them and it's not worth keeping them around.

Keeping your word is something to teach to our sons AND daughters. I've met both men and women who don't give a crap about keeping their word, but definitely more women. I've met women who look at me like I'm from outer space if I say something like "When you break your word, you dishonor yourself." I've met people who not only flake, but don't even understand the concept of honoring your word.

I promise not to take football or the Cowboys seriously for anything more than what it is, a game. Timeline: forever.

I promise to not be too serious and even if I am break that up with some goofiness with my Forum mates and mattresses. Timeline: until death do us part.

I promise to forgive forever.

At most, I'll possibly promise to try.

If you give your word, keep it. Don't give your word unless it's of absolute importance. As a wise man once said: "All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."

Is this thread a pop at Me for not rescuing You (again) from Your Martian conscription?

I didn't promise, I merely said I'd try, which I most certainly did, it's not My fault that logistical problems (We'd run out of vehicle requisition forms and somebody forgot to order some more) kept delaying the op.

Glad to see You made it out.

All is forgiven. I escaped, so it's water under the bridge.

Sometimes people make promises with a very good intention which was based on the circumstances of that moment ..Now not delivering on that promise is not a sin since the situation has changed.
