Good lord this football team is broken. Jerrys boys are running the show. Jerry and Jaylon telling the coaches what to do. This is not going to end well.

If we go 8-8 or worse this year I would love to see the team smash the reset button. The offense is what it is we have to ride it out. It should be good enough. For the defense bye bye Lawrence, Crawford, Jaylon, Gregory, Lee, Griffin, McCoy, Carr. Just eat the dead money. Draft a bunch of young guys. Sign some undrafted free agents. Let em play and see what happens.

Um where have we fore wasn't Ryan coaching here or even wade when players complain about this stuff they dont have much of a football IQ.. i can see why most are overpaid and under producing, adpatig to new scheme is a tough transition but if you cant do that , i dont want you on my team..

we finally get rid of our non creative vanilla coaching staff and after 2 games we have cry babies wanting to go back to EASY..

Interesting take. If I’m not mistaken, I’m fairly certain I’ve read this being said about Nolan before.

Yeah..

Nolan maybe not be the guy for us.

I just hope something jells for this defense at some point.

We have alot of new faces and it all maybe getting fuzzy for some.

But I have to assume our draft and FA signing are again going to be heavy defensive so either Nolan remains for the rebuilding and the players stay the course..

or the next change coaching will be a real debate.

We have had so much change on defense over the years. That ain't good.

The offense has had an advantage of long stretches of stability that makes them good..

but defense? Nope.

We must have had a half dozen it seems in the last decade as far as DCs.

Too much restarting and player switching to me.

Mosher, of course, ignores Nolan’s history. One of the criticisms of Nolan and why many of his more recent defenses were suspect is that his scheme was often too complicated.

So Mosher can take his dig at Smith but the reality is Smith is saying something that has been alleged before. Griffen just said a couple of days ago he’s going back to his three point stance, so already it seems the players don’t think Nolan is doing them any favors.

Granted not sure Smith should be airing this publicly.

IMO, when we look back I think we are going to end up admitting that Nolan was a questionable hire.
Big mistake bringing in Nolan.

Jaylon needs to shut up and suck it up. He had one good year and now he acts like he’s hot *bleep*. No one besides Griffen has complained about the scheme. It’s either too complicated or too simple. Sometimes, you begin to wonder if it was ever the coaching and if it was just the players all along. I know the coaching was atrocious, but I’m beginning to shift a lot of the blame on this lazy defense. “Waaah my knee!!” “Waaaaah! The defense is too complex for me to learn!! I need to focus on my sun glasses business!!”. You never heard stuff like this going on in the 80s, 90s, even the early 00’s.

There aren't two types of defense - one simple, one complex. It's quite possible we went from a DC who ran vanilla schemes to a DC whose defenses are so overly complex they actually hinder a defense's ability to perform. Again, there has been past criticism of Nolan defenses being overly complex in his desire to be as multi-dimensional as possible.

I think one would have a better argument here that the players are at fault if there wasn't a track record on Nolan of suspect defensive schemes. This was my concern from the moment Nolan was rumored to be the hire at DC. I never liked the hire and thought he was the worst hire of all the new assistants.

Problem is it's not just "these" players. His last two stints as DC both defenses were largely subpar to bad and some of the rumored criticisms were that Nolan's desire to be so multi-dimensional led to an overly complex defense (and guys playing out of position). We have seen Smith say this now. Griffen said a few days ago he's going back to putting his hand in the ground and no more 2 point stance. And there were examples from the Falcons game that some questioned such as a few plays, including a big first down before the half, where DeMarcus Lawrence was like 20 yards down field trying to help cover a WR.

I suspect there is a wide chasm between the boring, predictable stuff Richard was running and what Nolan is trying to do now. That's not an excuse for the players who need to play better but as I said elsewhere, I think we are likely going to look back on this a few years from now and realize we made a poor hire in Nolan.

Smith should be one of the last guys saying this stuff but the reality is what he's saying isn't exactly earthshattering when it comes to Nolan.
The most successful defense use a hybrid system. Belichek has mastered this hence 20 straight years of a top 10 defense with interchangeable players. Being able to change from a 4-3 to a 3-4 week to week or during the game is a great scheme in theory. I would rather work with Nolan on getting those types of players than throw Nolan out.
