How long before Nolan is fired and George Edwards takes over as DC?

Yeah I get it. Only 2 games. Hence why I said “not calling for him to be fired”. But NOBODY had an off-season/pre-season. Defense very far from good right now.

this is the case around the league and we have had more than our fair share of injuries....we lost our best cb and pass rusher too

For the record, I’m not calling for Nolan to be fired. I actually think it was a decent hire. But with the defense struggling and there already being talk of “simplifying the scheme”, I could see Nolan eventually being fired. Especially if they continue to struggle once fully healthy. George Edwards is already on staff and could step in, running more of a traditional 4-3. That would fit players like Everson Griffen and D-Law better most likely. Thoughts?

Going into next season, these are the only guys we have that are under contract that matter:

Lawrence, Gallimore, Hill, Gregory

LVE (Done) Jaylon Smith

Diggs, Rookie 4th round pick, Brown, Wilson

This defense is in really really rough shape going forward.

Almost all 3 levels need to be rebuilt. Im not sure any DC is going to look good with this bunch for at least 2 years.

It is a fundamental law of nature that even in the vacuum of space something can come into existence from nothing. Seems this applies to thoughts as well. Just two games played.
I never knew that something can just pop into existence.
Is that what happens with belly-button fluff?

The Cowboys won a game in which the offense and special teams had 5 total turnovers giving the Falcons a short field each time.

News Flash: They don't win in that situation if the defense "sucks".

I personally like the versatility Nolan brings.

They happen to have more 43 types on the roster at the moment, and the 34 isnt working well.

Just because one underachieving overpaid player moans about having to think a little we dont need to scrap the whole thing.

Predictability was killing us for years.

It's going to be interesting watching some of you eventually come to the realization that Nolan isn't that good a DC.

That's no excuse for Smith who has played poorly. Ship him out for all I care. But getting rid of Smith ain't gonna change what Nolan is and has been for much of his career.

its been 2 friggin games without a real offseason/preseason...give it a rest please

No way man....I've gone back and watched both games......breaking down both frame by frame. We are an abomination on defense. There is a huge disconnect between the front office...and the personnel they provided....and what Nolan is trying to run. D-Law in coverage??? Griffin in coverage???? Aldon in coverage???? Come on man....Nolan isn't putting the players in the best position to succeed. He's forcing his junk scheme on the players...and it just isn't working. The 3-4 defense is dead in the NFL. And the teams that still try and run it....stick out like a sore thumb. Offenses can run 3 and 4 WR sets....getting LBer in mis-matches. It's a bad recipe for success. I wouldn't trust any of our DE...playing out of position as LBers to cover a fast TE or WR. It's just not going to work.

:hammer:......
There was a reason he's been fired as many times as he has been.

It'd be absurd after just 2 games to consider firing someone who hasn't had nearly enough time to justify his methods. Coach Nolan should be allowed enough time to provide reasons to either keep him as DC or consider his eventual firing. No coach is intended to cater to everyone's preferences, as if it's a popularity contest for discerning fans. People far more qualified than fans are available to decide who deserves to be hired or fired.

It’s been 2 freakin games, half the starters are injured and they didn’t have a training camp to learn the new defense... anyone of those reasons gives the new DC a pass.

Coaching was my biggest concern coming into this season. 2 games in & I'm still not confident we've found the answer yet.

The offense is loaded to where we had 3 backups on the Oline plus Schultz starting & still basically scored at will. Kellen should be OK for now.

The defense brought in a bunch of FAs, but is nowhere near as good as the offensive side. D has been a problem child for years & we haven't quite turned the corner yet. I don't know if scheme alone is enough to correct it at this point.

I've only listened to a few vids of Nolan & like his demeaner. He comes across like he knows exactly what he's doing, but that doesn't mean he's as good as he sounds. It seems way too early to fire him right now, but the leash isn't very long.

How i see the defense despite the obvious need to get much better ..

A) So long as we are still among the more competitive teams....
so long as we are still among the more competitive teams ..
So long as we are winning to stay in the NFC playoff race, ....
So long as we are at the top of the NFC East Division,
So long as we are not among the very losing bottom teams of the NFL,...
so long as we are not on a losing streak that easily

B) With no offseason, preseason and limited camp, it may take some more suitable time to install, learn, adapt and adjust to a new defense

C) Much of the NFL is struggling defensively, as NFL is off to a record setting offensive start ..we are not alone.
Plus we're playing with some of our key CB guns out, injured Dlaw and, we have young developing starting guns like Hill and Diggs
still in beginner's class - we have to see how it plays out as the season progresses.

There is zero chance he's going to get fired during the season but I wonder how much of a lease Jerry will have with him if the defense continues to play as they have. Right now, they are 15th in DVOA and we were sold that Nolan's D might give up yards and some points but they would also be aggressive and cause turnovers and get after the QB. Neither has happened thus far.

if we go on a losing streak for most of the season because we cannot compete defensively and setting NFL records in that area at that,
i can see the Jones getting frustrated enuff to pressure McCarthy to make a drastic change. Even with a new defense and no offseason at that.

Pandemic crisis or not, Jones don't want a rebuilding process on defense ,,or Head Coach - they've made it clear they are going for the throat when
it comes to the Super bowl drive run And they strike me as no longer endeared to excuses. ..imo.
