It's interesting Romo's is hardly mentioned for his accomplishments as a Cowboy QB. In fact, you guess the impression he's detached himself from the team as a former player. In other words, when I see or hear his name, I respect his legacy but I'm not feeling him like other former Cowboy players.
I don't think Tony has detached himself from the Cowboys. He just never really got attached to Cowboys history. Accomplishments really aren't there during the Romo years compared to other Cowboys QBs.
Other legitimate Dallas QBs all went at least to Conference Championships going back to Meredith. But not Tony. And not Dak yet.
Had a couple of contender years with Tony in 2007 and 2014, but no sustained period of strength. Could argue that 2006-2009, the team that Parcells built, was a period of strength. But Tony was still learning. Great offense around him in 2006, but he erratic. 2007-2009, Jerry limited the team at WR. And Tony was still erratic.
Career shortened and limited by spending years on the bench, injury, and Jerry making poor moves. Almost Antonio.
I wish they had given Tony a last chance in 2016. He was MVP level in 2014. Good chance he could have been in 2016 too, with the most dominant run game and oline he would have ever had.
But no. Almost Antonio didn't get that last chance. At most, he'll be remembered as a "what might have been" kind of Dallas QB. By those who watched him. Those who didn't watch him will not know him at all as those Cowboy years just won't be relived by future fans.
