How would you fix this defense going forward

Not just right now, but even after the season. Its obvious this defense will hold this team back from being even close to a contender

Its been approximately 11 years since we fielded any semblance of a reliable defense.

The dumb owner and his son obviously have 0 idea how to fix that side of the ball.

Cutting Tank and Jaylon are probably the most popular option, but not realistic.

Id start by signing Earl Thomas. Second, I'd move d-law around and make sure he's in on every 3rd down. If we don't sign ET, move Awuzie to the slot and use him like he was used in college.

This defense is ok. Seattle was the first good team we were facing. They did good. We had a chance at the end.

They did not play DLaw a lot. So thats a good sign regarding the coaches.

If we didn't have so many holes in the OL, I would try and draft in some defensive help but I think we'll need to hit free agency next spring.

For this season there really isn't a lot they can do. Thompson has to get benched is an easy call. Go get Thomas (who I was opposed to grabbing but the S play is so awful or Reid) or give Wilson hs snaps. How can Wilson be worse?

They are stuck at CB until Awuzie comes back, and he's no great shakes. Worley is terrible.

Not much they can do at LB.

Not much they can do at DT. Gallimore is raw and needs work so they don't have many options at DT. People keep screaming for Snacks, but he's not the kind of DT we need.

And in the end, it might not matter what changes are made as long as Nolan is calling the defense.

Offseason? Draft some safeties for chrissakes or bring in some real ones in FA. Granted, with the cap implications of the pandemic for 2021, we might not have the cheddar to spend on upgrading the secondary.

They need another DT IMO. They need to rebuild the LB corps. Amazing how we went from 2018 and thinking our LBs were stacked to 2020 and realizing we may need pretty much an entire new starting LB corps.

They need to invest in safety.

People who think safeties don’t matter aren’t paying attention.

Also, in the draft. I prioritize players who force a lot of turnovers in college. We need guys who know how to turn the ball over.

I can live with giving up 30 points if you get 2-3 turnovers and give the offense some chances at easy points.

Draft defense with premium picks rather than filling their boots with luxury picks in the first round.

Continue to make excellent value free agency signings like Aldon Smith this season, Robert Quinn last season.

Try to trade Lawrence to offload his contract.

We might need to trade one of our receivers (probably Cooper) for draft picks/elite defender to address the balance on the roster.

As someone stated earlier, get healthy. Lee could change a lot real fast by himself. He was our best player on D last year.

That’s a tough fix.

They’re relying on players who shouldn’t even be on the team. They’re stuck with Jaylon and Lawrence, and they’re both making a ton of money. And even worse, they’re both major liabilities on the field.

I don’t think there will be enough cap money available to afford us improving the defense to a respectable level. Even bringing in a guy like Earl Thomas wouldn’t put us over the hump.

To be short: I’m not sure there’s a realistic solution. Just pray some guys step up

I'm beyond frustrated with DeMarcus, yes. DeMarcus. Not even worthy to be called Tank anymore.

We pick up retread defensive ends that consistently out perform him in the pass rush and this supposed "elite" run defender gets maybe 1 or 2 stops a game in that department. Just a scarecrow out there and just a guy. Not in the lineup on third down is damning as well. That's when guys like him are supposed to eat. He and Jaylon are all talk.
