I wouldn't be surprised if Earl never in an impact player again. The end of your playing career typically comes fast and many times ugly in the NFL. Maybe he has a bounce back and returns to form as a veteran leader but it appears he will need to change a lot about himself if this were to happen.

This doesn't excuse the massive miscalculation Dallas had on their safeties. I think it is safe to say neither of our starting safeties would be starting anywhere else. Heck, they might not even make most other teams if they didn't make our roster. At times Dallas does smart things but every year there are 1-2 position groups that they just completely whiff on. I don't think high priced Free agents are the answer in most cases but to not give yourself protection with smart pickups is where they usually come up short.

I agree there.

Unfortunately the Smith return is also a big maybe.

Knight seems to have been a Godsend, and it would have been nice to plug him in at LG.

Smith is the key.....because it frees up Knight to move to RT, and puts Steele back into developmental mode (where he belongs at this point).

This FO has always forced their own agenda (be it high picks or guys who got paid) and its bothersome to me that may still be the case after the regime change.

In fact I'm sure it is. Denial creates the only doubt.

Theres just too many people telling those two what they want to hear instead of harsh reality.

Theres no way anyone can sit there and say guys like Thompson and Woods are quality starters on an NFL team as an example.

Williams definitely falls into this category. The second contract here CANNOT happen. When is it time to move on?

I think Williams deserves at least a chance at offensive tackle. He's been done a disservice here since day one forcing him to try to be a guard. He just isn't. But I'd rather see him given a chance at the position he played in college rather than being thrown away without getting one.

Bill O'Bortion of the Texans HATES malcontents. Why is he after Earl? Just does not make sense. I wish we would make Donovan Wilson prove he is not an upgrade over what we have.

The real reason is Cowboys need all the cap space they can to sign Dak next year. There is a reason they cleared so much cap space to carry over to next season knowing the salary cap will shrink with less revenue. But Dak isnt going to take less money and Dallas will have to afford paying him 40 million a year and wont be able to spread that money out over 5 years cause Dak is to selfish to try and help the team out, so they can keep good players around him.

Not to mention Dallas has other players they want to keep. Safety will need to be address in next years draft class.

Anyone believe its cause of his issues is blind. Dallas signed A. Smith who has issue after issue. Bringing back Gregory with open arms. Its all about paying Dak

Very big mistake doing this. Unless we can consistently do good on offense (50 points or more) with no mistakes on offense or Special teams, this team is going nowhere. That defense is too horrendous to overcome.

TO helped the cowboys to a 13-3 record.
Exceptions to the rule not withstanding..

now that some of the blanks are being filled in the part about not having a Cam Chancellor is the key.

Not having another high price companion for ET is the fly in the ointment.

Like with our LBers Wolf Hunter and Jaylon Smith..

together they are dynamic but separately they are much less.

It just poor timing for us.

Being as we have a lot of rebuilding to do paying a guy like ET would not work.

At this point with so much obvious rebuilding to do and a shrinking cap next year..

This team would be crazy to sign and pay Dak $38mil on a second tag. That all changes now.

Having said that..

no way we can afford Dak going forward.

Paying Dak has lead to financial rigor mortis.

We have to let him walk now.

Dak has a Dream Team built around him as it is.

He is never going to have another team spend the money Dallas has spent on offense to make Dak succeed.

I am for letting him go test the waters.

Thanks for sharing this.

Charles Robinson is a well-informed, reliable source in my opinion. He's provided many internal details and decisions with the Cowboys before. I trust his reporting, and everything he's saying lines up with the facts.

No matter how badly the Dallas secondary plays, it's clear that they won't be reaching out to Earl Thomas.
Yeah..

I have read his articles before.

Good reporter..enjoy the read but hated the facts he shows us.

If they win a few games they need to look at a trade.

Does the Jets or some team like that have a decent safety?

What is up with Donovan Wilson? The guy has done nothing but make plays when given the opportunity.
The problem with a trade right now IMO is other teams know the Cowboys are desperate for help on defense which always drives up the price. Besides, a trade for a veteran right now is just another quick fix, plug a hole type philosophy that continues to haunt this team. Quick fixes, even if some work a little in the short term, have not so good consequences in the long term.

I’ll admit I’ve always been on the ET train for him to play here and even with this report as bad as this secondary is I still believe you bring him in. Talk to the guy see where his head is, discuss the scheme and expectations. It cost you absolutely nothing to give him a trial run. He doesn’t fit fine you give him his walking papers and move on knowing you looked at helping your team to get better. This defense needs some serious help and I highly doubt its gonna fix itself over the course of the season on its own.
You would have to weigh the cap hit and sign a multi year deal to sign ET.

That is unaffordable in our present situation.

So unfortunately you must move on.

If McCarthy says "no"..

that's it.
Agreed, it appears McCarthy used his sources from the coaching fraternity to nix Earl to Dallas.

I'll give McCarthy benefit of the doubt but if our defense play doesn't improve in secondary....he can find another massage parlor to waddle in...

Anybody want Ha Ha Clinton Dix back?

We never even saw him take a snap.

I think the team made a mistake cutting him with so little time to learn the defense.

Especially for DB's. They often just fall off a table around 28-31 YOA.
