Success has a thousand fathers, defeat is an orphan and some defeats come down to a few very, very basic things.

You aren’t going to win when you are starting two UDFA tackles. Losing Tyron Smith is basically a 7 point swing. Tony Pollard gave Seattle 9 points in his endzone braincramp. Add in execution mistakes because of the lack of a preseason and this game shouldn’t have been close playing against Russell Wilson. Our passing game kept us in the game, which was a minor miracle. But Dallas didn’t get a gift to win it like last week.

Remember Amari Cooper last year saying Gallup was a #1? He was right.

Our DBs were bad yesterday (moreso in the first half) but sometimes you have to look at the long term under the salary cap. Dallas had an upper tier RB in Demarco Murray, who left for a greatly overpaid contract. Dallas signed Darren McFadden and got good production at a bargain rate, then drafted Zeke. For that one year DeMarco was a better player but it was the right move to suffer through one downgraded year instead of overpaying DeMarco. Continuing the analogy, its better over the long term to have Worley at a bargain than to break the bank for Byron Jones. Even if this year is a downgrade.

Jourdan Lewis averaged 2 TFL a season for three years, 2 yesterday. At this point I would gamble on giving the boom-or-bust Lewis more reps at CB with Worley and Carr taking the Free Safety snaps now.

Our 4th WR Cedric Wilson had 107 receiving yards yesterday. Our 4th WR two years ago, Deonte Thompson (who had four starts that year) had 124 yards for the season. We are going to make that kind of upgrade to the defensive back group next year.

Trysten Hill and Antwuan Woods are the backup DTs but better than the starters. Hill got more snaps than Crawford (53 to 39) but Woods got less than Poe (32 – 52).

Glad we listened to fans and cut Dalton Schutz after the first game. Schultz is going to be an average starter, which is fine for a backup that cost us a 4th round pick.

On the swing pass to Zeke that looked like a facemask initially, it was a legal tackle. Why? Because you can grab a player by the back of the helmet but not the shoulder pads. Shouldn’t they amend this rule?

ARTICLE 16. HORSE-COLLAR TACKLE

No player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground. This does not apply to a runner who is in the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket.

Good post but I disagree about Lewis over Worley.

Worley was good. It was between him and LB Joe Thomas for 2nd best player on defense.

Trysten Hill has started all 3 games.

The Seahawks punted on the possession after Pollard downed the ball at the one which resulted in the Safety.
- It was really just a 2 point swing.

Like the guy running the pumps on the Titanic.

- ....."But boss, this pump was designed to pump the bilge on a 2 man row boat".
- "You're just not trying hard enough."

I wanted Murray over Zeke but Zeke is a better player and will affect more games than a guy like Ramsey will.

About Demarco I don't get the argument that Demarco would have given Dallas a discount when he very clearly refused to give Dallas a discount. He went to the highest bidder and was wildly overpaid. Even if he took the final offer Dallas made (reportedly 6 or 7MM a season) he still would have been overpaid.

The Eagles gave him a 40 Million dollar deal and he only played three more seasons - averaging 900 yards a year for those three years. My point is we were much better off not making the overpayment for a FA. In that one year between Demarco and Zeke, Dallas got a RB who outrushed him (1089 to 702) for about one tenth of the salary. Going from Byron Jones to Trevon Diggs isn't going to be that dramatic, but its a better bet over the long run than making Jones the highest paid CB in the league.

I forget the leaked numbers Dallas was going to offer him, but it was low. Eagles didn't target him right away but when they did they gave him a stupid offer. And he didn't fit Kelly's offense. His buddy Bradford recruited him.

I get your point, but what positions are worth letting walk, and others re-sign?
I can get the rb argument, but they re-signed Zeke to a monster deal.
They gave Law a huge deal and gave Smith a big deal too.

Edge rusher I get. But Jones was an all pro corner. Blind to the ball but covered guys very well

I don't want to bench Worley, I want Worley and Carr at FS so they bench Darian Thompson. I think the biggest issue by far is execution because of the lack of preseason to work into the new defense - but I definitely want a guy like Worley in those deep sets instead of Thompson.

I don't think the Dallas offer was public but my memory is that Dallas topped out around 6MM for the next season. They weren't willing to overpay and didn't think Demarco wanted to leave, but once their offer was set his agent shopped it to Philly just like you say. They overpaid badly, which was my main point.

On what position? It was the right move to let Byron Jones and Quinn walk, both were badly overpaid. Fortunately we replaced Quinn quickly (TWICE!!) with Griffen and Aldon Smith. My main point on that is that even with the dropoff at CB this year, it was still the right move to not overpay Bryon even if this year suffers.

Someone will pay Gallup like a first. Hope it ain't us. Always beware the #2 paired with a top #1 and other quality skill players. His production is likely an illusion caused by a lack of defensive attention.

Griffen has been one of the unstated disappointments this year. But between ASmith, DLaw, Armstrong, and even Anae, I think we can live entirely without him. And Gregory is coming back too.

I agree about letting Quinn and Byron walk. Don't overpay players even if you have to take a step back at a position. Just keep maximizing value per dollar.

Zeke was drafted for Romo. The waste was not in drafting him, the issue was not letting Romo start with Zeke in back-field. Dallas didn’t sign Murray to the desk he wanted, because they also had to pay Dez. They offered him a deal the year before he walked, 4 year 16 million. He bet on himself, refused the deal, and that was the first year he played a full season. The next year they offered him 4 years at 24 million, with 12 guaranteed based on number of carries he already had and the trend of decline in longevity for RBs. Eagles came out of nowhere after losing on Gore and offering 21 guaranteed. They all used Bradford who was Murray’s roommate to make the pitch. The other competitors were Oakland and Jacksonville and they were bum franchises.

And Dallas looked to be correct with him anyway:

Wrong.

Here is the applicable rule:

ARTICLE 15. TWISTING, PULLING, OR TURNING THE FACEMASK OR HELMET OPENING. No player shall grasp and
control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask or helmet opening of an opponent in any direction.

.
Note: If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask or helmet opening, he must immediately release it. If he does not
immediately release it and controls his opponent, it is a foul.

.
Penalty: For twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, or controlling the mask or helmet opening: Loss of 15 yards. The player
may be disqualified if the action is flagrant. If the foul is by the defense, it is also an automatic first down.
This penalty was called against Jeff Heath back in 2017 against Atlanta:

Helmet-Pull.gif

Doesn't look like K.J. Wright immediately released and did control Zeke with the pull. Should have been a penalty. Zeke knew the rule and complained.

EE-Helmet-Pull.gif

That was one of the worst refereed games I have ever seen. That entire crew should be fined if not fired. Making rules up as they went along. Nobody knew the rules....Honestly.....Seattle should have been called for offensive holding a dozen times....and getting an illegal contact of PI call???? Good luck...you would have thought the Legion of Boom was still in Seattle.

One of the worst things I noticed when rewatching was our defensive play call on 4th and 3 on the last Seahawks drive. We get that stop, the game is likely over. We rush four and play soft zone and allow Olsen to just lay down in center field.

Have no idea why Nolan didn't at least attempt to bring the heat. Even if Russell beats the blitz and burns you, you're 1:49 drill turns into a 3 minute drill.
your right, but this is standard football mentality for most teams.
They are so afraid of a big play, they give up first downs easily!
On 3rd and long or a 4th down play like that, I would always bring pressure rush more than they can block lol.
you may get burnt sometimes but in long run it pays off. That is a better gamble than going for it on a fake punt like dallas did in last game.

Speaking of penalties what do you think of the tripping non-call on the very last play?

We all like to bash on Kellen Moore. But I thought that pass play down the middle to Cedric Wilson was awesome. If Garrett was here we would just be running up the middle with Zeke and play pitch and catch on 3rd down with Witten.

#54 and #98 shouldn't be here this season and Byron should. The FO screwed up royally.

Kellen Moore is definitely a plus and not a minus. I think anyone ripping on him should go back to watch any quarter of a game Scott Linehan called to see every route as a comeback route.

Thomas blowing the coverage didnt help, but we all knew they were getting that.

When was the last time this team made a big stop like that?

If Nolan DID blitz, they probably get burned for a TD then have time to score on the rebound.

This 1000 times, you bring the heat with this D at that time, if you miss more time for the O to do their thing, if you hit probably ends the game....we hadn't base cover stopped them all game.
